Newnan Theatre to Present Innovative Version of A Christmas Carol

Dianne Olsen, speaking on behalf of the Newnan Theatre, has this to say about their presentation of A Christmas Carol:

"Magical, musical, comical -- all in time for the holiday season!  Newnan Community Theatre Company's A Christmas Carol will not be the usual traditional program.  This adaptation, by director Tonya Dewyne Jefferson, includes lots of laughs and modern songs (imagine Michael Jackson's Thriller and Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You!).

The cast is having a fun time bringing this play to life.  With NCTC favorites Jeff Allen, Lenton Lees, and Sam Gentry among the cast members, it is sure to be a crowd pleaser.  There are dance numbers along with the Cratchit children, but this season, get ready for something a little non-traditional!

The show opens on Friday, November 28th at 8 pm.  Show dates are November 28, 29, 30, December 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, and 14.  The Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8 pm, the Sunday matinee is at 2:30 pm.  The show on December 7th will begin at approximately 4:30 pm, after the Newnan Christmas parade.

The Newnan Community Theatre Company is located at 24 First Avenue, Newnan. For more information, visit them online at newnantheatre.com or call (770) 683-6282.  Tickets may be purchased online.  Seating is limited, so advance purchase of tickets is recommended."

Newnan Theatre Does More Than Perform Plays:

They Also Offer a "Murder Mystery Dinner" and an Improv Troupe

If you thought that all the Newnan Theatre does is put on plays, think again!!  Their website www.newnantheatre.com announces two other events:  a "Murder Mystery Dinner" and a performance by an Improv Troupe.

In the wake of the recent Coweta arts news items about Senoian Joey Waldrop being accepted into the Fayette improv troupe called The Gallery Players, one may wonder whether there is a Coweta improv troupe.  The answer is "Yes" and there will be an opportunity to see them perform at the Newnan Theatre on November 15 at 8 PM.  They call themselves by the acronym NITWITS, which stands for "NCTC Improv Troupe With Incredibly Talented Stooges".  Will they be good enough to become as famous as The Three Stooges??  Come to the Newnan Theatre and decide for yourself!

Dianne Olsen, speaking for the Theatre has this comment on NITWITS:

"Based on the Drew Carey popular TV Show, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, the group follows a game format with interaction from the audience.  Headed by Darren Matthews, the group is new to the theatre this year, but has become very popular.  Tickets are only $5 at the door, and it's sure to be a fun evening out.  Due to content, the show is rated PG-13.  With improv, one never knows what may happen!"

See below for the info about this NTWITS troupe and about the Murder Mystery Dinner which is on the Theatre website:

Lacuna Group To Perform Shakespeare's Coriolanus On November 1

Donations At Door Will Benefit Newnan Theatre

The actors in Dale Lyles' Lacuna Group are excited by how well their outdoor afternoon performances at Newnan's Greenville Street Park went on Saturday (October 25) and they are looking forward to their next performance this coming Saturday (November 1).  Here is what Lyles has to say:

"The Lacuna Group will perform William Shakespeare's Coriolanus at the Newnan Community Theatre Company on First Avenue in Newnan on Saturday, November 1, at 8:00.  This is a benefit performance for NCTC; donations will be accepted at the door.

The all-male production performed successfully last weekend in the Greenville Street Park with two afternoon performances.

'Audiences really enjoyed the play,' said Dale Lyles, one of the cast members.  'They were struck by the timelessness of the political processes Shakespeare describes: the ill-tempered war hero, the charges of elitism, the manipulation of the common herd.  They also were surprised at how fresh the language is.  Everyone thinks of Shakespeare as "hard", but most people have not had the experience of seeing his plays performed.'

The play, three hours long, is for mature audiences only.  Younger children will not understand the complex political maneuverings of the characters."

The Gallery Players To Perform at Riverwood Studios in Senoia

Noted Improv Troupe Part of Susan Steadman's Offshoot Productions

This year the arts suddenly exploded in the Coweta County City of Senoia and they show no signs of stopping.  The latest exciting news is that the highly acclaimed Fayette-County-based improvisation troupe The Gallery Players (which is part of the prestigious Offshoot Productions of Dr. Susan Steadman) will be performing in Senoia at the Riverwood Studios.  And one of these performers is none other than Senoia's own Joey Waldrop, who was one of the previous Senoia arts news-makers when he was accepted into this improv troupe earlier this year!

This latest arts news triumph for Senoia was announced yesterday by Senoia's Claudia Wood, who was one of the leaders in Art Senoia earlier this year, one of the greatest of the explosions!  Here is her news release:

Senoia Hosts Improv Performance

Take a little time out of your busy fall schedule to enjoy a funny, refreshing afternoon of professional comedy right here in our own area. The Gallery Players, an improvisational troupe from Offshoot Productions, will perform "Senoia Autumn Improv" at Riverwood Studios in Senoia on Sunday, November 16th at 4:00 p.m.

An "improv" performance is a series of scenes in which the actors improvise everything - from characters to events to lines - so that each performance is unique. The actors rehearse for many hours to prepare for whatever details the audience might throw at them. This is the premise of the TV show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" and the shows that The Gallery Players perform.

Ranging in age from their twenties to their fifties, The Gallery Players boast a wide variety of credits in theatre and music. Members are Elizabeth Clausen, Andy Fleming, Kristi Israel, Betty Mitchell, Paige Steadman, and Senoia's own Joey Waldrop. The Director of Offshoot Productions and The Gallery Players is Susan M. Steadman.
"Senoia Autumn Improv" is sponsored by the Cultural Arts Committee of the Senoia Downtown Development Authority. Tickets to the performance are $12 and can be purchased Tuesday through Friday at the Welcome Center on Main Street in Historic Downtown Senoia or by phone. Seating is extremely limited, and light refreshments will be served after the performance. For tickets or more information, contact Suzanne Helfman at 770-599-8182 or Claudia Wood at 770-599-0047.

A Sanders Family Christmas Coming to Arts Centre

There will be a lot of holiday programs this year in and near Coweta so now would be a good time to start marking your calendar.  One which looks interesting is the performance of A Sanders Family Christmas at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County on December 13 at 7 PM.  The Centre's events calendar section describes it in these words:

"A Sanders Family Christmas" is gospel sing and testimonial set in December, 1941 shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This is the last opportunity for the Sanders family to sing together as Denis the youngest boy has joined the Navy and getting ready to leave. It is a wonderful telling of the Christmas story in Luke:  the story heart felt and humorous and all wrapped up in a great big Christmas bow. A great show to bring grandchildren or grand parents to see, you'll hear some of your favorite Christmas songs and few you haven't heard before. But you will be sure to go out the door with a song in your heart and the surrounded by the true feeling of Christmas."

Tickets will go on sale on November 1.  The cost is $12 for adults, and  $10 Students and Senior Citizens.
The Centre is located several miles east of Newnan on Lower Fayetteville Road.  Information about this and other shows at the Centre is available by calling 770-254-2787.

Images Gallery Announces Stained Glass Workshop Schedule

Plus Future Renovations and Expansions

Deborah Smith, the Owner/Operator of the Images Fine Art Gallery in Moreland, recently stated that various renovations and expansions are underway that will in the near future lead to improvements and increases in the operations there.  The specifics will be announced soon.  At present, there is a curtailed activity which is limited to stained glass workshops taught by Newnan artist Kay Moore of Sookie's Glass Art Studio.  Speaking of stained glass, Smith has recently become a real fan of stained glass and is herself (along with several other members of her family) one of Moore's students.  And, Moore in answer to a recent question on the subject, ridiculed the myth that the art of making stained glass windows was lost after the end of the Middle Ages.  It is still very much alive and well, she says, especially here in Coweta County!

The information below about the Stained Glass Classes at Images is found on their website http://www.imagesgallery.biz/classes.html.  (Moore's website is found at

http://sookiesglassartstudio.blogspot.com.)  There have also been changes in Deborah Smith's phone number.  She has discontinued both of her home telephones and now only uses her cell phone, which is 678-850-1868.  Her email address has also changed:  the new one is imagesart1@live.com

Send in a deposit reserve your spot in class and when you attend your class you'll purchase a block of flexible classes. Currently, classes are offered at the days/times listed above.

AJC Theatre Reviewer Applauds Vintage Hitchcock:

Says It Has Put the Legacy Theatre On the National Map

In recent times Atlanta has been paying ever more attention to the burgeoning Southside arts scene.  The latest example of this pertains to the Legacy Theatre, which is located in the Fayette County city of Tyrone and which is owned and run by Mark and Bethany Smith of the Coweta County city of Newnan.  And the occasion is the world premiere of Joe Landry's Vintage Hitchcock.

In today's Altanta Journal-Constitition Theatre Reviewer Wendell Brock has high praise both for Landry's play and for its performance by the Legacy.  The full review can be read on the Access Atlanta site:  http://www.accessatlanta.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/accessatlanta/atlarts/.   It concludes with these words:  the 3-year-old Legacy Theatre puts itself on the national map with an exciting premiere that exploits the aural magic of this tingly film auteur.

Information on the Legacy Theatre is found on its website www.thelegacytheatre.org

High kudos are in order for Mark and Bethany Smith and for Joe Landry and for the cast and other theatrical personnel which have made this great triumph possible, which has brought great honor to the Southside arts scene!  If we were living in the Middle Ages we would exult magna cum laude !!

NCAA Gallery At Espresso Lane Continues With Changes:

New Owners; New Co-ordinator; Longer Exhibit Times

Next Reception Set For October 26

Several years ago the Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA) came up with a great idea: exhibiting the paintings of its members on the walls of the coffee shop in downtown Newnan originally called Gallery Row and now called Espresso Lane.  The shop is not large but it has a great deal of available wall space which NCAA has been using for periodic themed exhibits.  These exhibits, which have been held monthly, recently got a longer exhibit time, lasting approximately a month and a half.

The Reception for the next themed exhibit -- "Days Growing Shorter" -- is set for Thursday, October 30 from 7:00 - 8:30 PM.  During this time you can drop in, get a cup of great coffee, and meet the artists displaying their paintings for the new exhibit. And you can stop in at any time Espresso Lane is open to see the paintings.

There have also been personnel changes.  New owners have recently taken over Espresso Lane --  Nathan and January Dockery, who are continuing to allow the walls to be used as the NCAA Gallery.  And Nancy Tomlin is the new Gallery Co-ordinator, who can be reached at elgallery@newcaa.com.  Espresso Lane is located at 22 West Court Square; its phone no. is 770-683-7290.

Lacuna Group Announces  Three Performances of Coriolanus

Dale Lyles has just issued this news release on behalf of his Lacuna Group:

The Lacuna Group production of William Shakespeare's Coriolanus will be performed on Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26, at 3:00 pm in the new Greenville Street Park in Newnan. The performance is free.

There will be an additional performance on Saturday, November 1, as a benefit for the Newnan Community Theare Company on First Avenue. That performance will be at 8:00 pm ; donations will be taken at the door.

In case of rain, the October 25 performance will take place in the Parish House of the First United Methodist Church. There is not a backup venue for the Sunday performance; if the performance is rained out, it will be canceled.

Thirty minutes before the play begins, at 2:30 on October 25 and 26, and at 7:30 on November 1, members of the cast will have a discussion about the play with audience members who are interested in knowing more about the play before they see it.

Coriolanus tells the story of Caius Martius (Jeff Bishop), a Roman general who "fights dragonlike" in Rome's wars with the Volsces, but when his mother Volumnia (Marc Honea) pushes him to stand for consul—Rome's highest office—his contempt for the common people becomes a problem.

The people's representatives, the tribunes Sicinius (Greg Lee) and Brutus (Dan Coleman), make it their business to keep the people riled up and angry at Martius. Eventually they manage to exile him after pushing him to explode in anger at the plebeians.

Martius seeks out his greatest enemy, the Volscian warrior Aufidius (Dale Lyles), and offers his services to the Volscian state. As he marauds through Roman territroy with the enemy army, Rome panics and sends various emissaries to Martius to convince him not to invade the city, including his old general Cominius (John Bilon) and the old family friend Menenius (Kevin McInturff).

However, it is only when his mother and his wife (Jeff Allen) come to appeal to him that he relents. Volumnia is hailed as the savior of Rome, but she knows that it has cost her her son.

Also in the cast is Scott Stroud, who plays a variety of senators, citizens, and messengers.

It is suggested that the audience bring seating (chairs or blankets), sunglasses, and "a hat with a brim to keep the sun out of your eyes," said Lyles. Sunscreen would probably be a good idea as well. There are no restrooms in the park. There will be one intermission.

"We have been absolutely astounded at how contemporary the characters in this play are," said Jeff Bishop. "We have seen every turn of events, every character trait, every sentiment in the play mirrored in our own election."

Marc Honea agreed. "Audience members will spend a lot of the play either chuckling in recognition or being appalled as they see their favorite candidate—or their least favorite—appear in the business of the play."

Information on the Lacuna Group is available on their website http://lacunagroup.org/.
