[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Grantville Christmas Parade Set For December 13

Schultz 770-583-3258     November 18, 2008   Grantville Christmas Parade On December 13   Post-Parade Photo Op With Santa at Bonnie Castle        Although Calico Christmas has been cancelled, the Parade associated with it will still be held as planned on December 13.  It will begin at 3 PM in front of City Hall and will proceed north along LaGrange Street to the Post Street Park.  The Grand Marshall of the Parade will be Sonny Bugg.  After the Parade a Photo Op With Santa will be held at The Bonnie Castle mansion, one of Georgia's most famous historic buildings.          Information on the Parade is available from Megan Birchfield at 770-583-3843 or SheerLuc@aol.com.         Other Grantville Christmas events are being planned which will be announced soon.          Grantville is located in southern Coweta County at Exit 35 on Interstate 85.

Schultz 770-583-3258     November 15, 2008   Grantville Christmas News:   Calico Christmas Cancelled   Christmas Tree Lighting Set For December 4   Christmas Parade and Other Christmas Events Being Planned        The bad news is that there will no Calico Christmas in Grantville this year.  However, the good news is that other events are now being planned instead, including the already announced Christmas Parade, which is still scheduled for December 13.  Details of the Parade and the other events will be announced later.        There is one event that is ready to be announced now and that is the Christmas Tree Lighting, which will be held on Thursday night December 4 at 6:30 PM in Colley Park on Main Street in Grantville. The lighting ceremony will involve the singing of Christmas Carols by the students at Glanton Elementary School.         Grantville is a small city in southern Coweta County located at Exit 35 on Interstate 85.  It is named after Mr. L.P. Grant, who served for some time during the 19th century as the President of the railroad running through Grantville.  Colley Park is named after the Colley family which built and lived in the historic Bonnie Castle mansion for many years.  The Bonnie Castle will be involved in the soon to be anounced Christmas events.  The Glanton Elementary school is named after Mr. Thomas Glanton, who served for many years as teacher, coach, and principal of the Grantville High School.

Schultz 770-583-3258     November 15, 2008     Santa Claus Coming To Historic Downtown Newnan:   Will Light Christmas Tree on November 28   Will Lead Christmas Parade on December 7        Main Street Newnan will be completing a great year with its festive Christmas activities, which are an important contribution to the Coweta scene.        They have invited Santa Claus to Historic Downtown Newnan on Friday November 28 to light the Christmas Tree and to meet the children.  He will be there from 6 PM thru 8 PM.        Santa will be returning for another traditional Holiday event, the Christmas Parade, which he will lead on December 7 starting at 3 PM.  The parade, which will consist of lots of floats and marching bands, is entitled "Downtown: The Heartbeat of the Holidays".        Information on these and other Main Street Newnan events is available on their website www.mainstreetnewnan.com  or by calling 770-253-8283.

Schultz 770-583-3258   November 12, 2008   NCAA Schedule Formed For Themed Exhibits at Espresso Lane    Next  Reception On December 11         According to Nancy Tomlin, The Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA) recently adopted a schedule for all the themed exhibits at its Gallery at Espresso Lane for the following year.  This is very helpful because now the Receception Dates and times can be announced in advance instead of just a few days before.  It is especially important to know well in advance the dates of upcoming events during this year's Holiday Season when one needs to decide among the many events in and near Coweta County which are planned -- this should be the busiest season ever!           According to the NCAA Themed Exhibit Calendar, the next such exhibit will last for seven weeks, from December 7, 2008 through January 25, 2009.  The Theme will be "What A Year We Have Had" or "Artist's Choice" (meaning each artist can choose which painting he wishes to exhibit).  The Reception for this Exhibit will be held at Espresso Lane on Thursday, December 11 from 7:00 PM through 8:30 PM.  As always, this Reception provides an opportunity not only to see the paintings adorning the walls, but also to meet the artists who produced them and to have a cup of great coffee!        The Expresso Lane Coffee Shop is located on the Courthouse Square in downtown Newnan at 22 West Court Square.  Coming to the Reception will also provide the opportunity to meet the new owners, January and Nathan Dockery, who, as previously announced, have agreed to continue to allow its wall space to be used for the NCAA Gallery.  Information on Espresso Lane is available on their website http://espressolanenewnan.com or by calling 770-683-7290 or by emailing espressolanenewnan@gmail.com.         Information on the NCAA Gallery is available from its co-ordinator Nancy Tomlin at "Espresso Lane Gallery Coordinator" elgallery@newcaa.com or by visiting the NCAA website www.newcaa.com and then clicking on Espresso Lane.

Schultz 770-583-3258   November 11, 2008   Grassroots Arts Grants For 2009 Announced:   Arts Centre and Southeastern Ballet Company Are Recipients        Arts Clayton has just announced the recipients for the 2009 Grassroots Arts Grants for the Southside Counties.  Coweta County has received three of these grants:  one going to the Southeastern Ballet Co. and two to organizations of the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County, namely its Masterworks Chorale and its patrons organization, which is called the Coweta Community Foundation.  The exact wording in the Arts Clayton news release about Coweta County is this: COWETA COUNTY:  Centered on Masterworks Chorale, "Music of the Masters; Coweta Community Foundation (Patrons of the Centre), "Annie Get your Gun"; Southeastern Ballet Company, Holiday Spectacular        The news release explained the GAP program in these words:   Jonesboro – Arts Clayton has announced its annual Grassroots Arts Program (GAP) grants to organizations in Butts, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Jasper, Lamar, Newton , Rockdale and Spalding Counties .  Over the next year, the projects of thirty-one organizations will be partially funded through the GAP program.  South Side area organizations received grants totaling over twenty-six thousand dollars as part of the statewide Grassroots Arts Program.  Each project was selected for their proposal to provide new art experiences for the community or to expand existing art programs and reaching out to new audiences. The Grassroots Arts Program is funded by the Georgia Council for the Arts through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly to ensure all Georgians have access to the arts activities which enrich our lives.  Every Georgia County receives an equal per-capita allocation.  Arts Clayton was once again selected by the Georgia Council for the Arts as a Grassroots Agency to administer this exciting program for the ten counties in the Southside region for fiscal year 2009.  Arts Clayton, as the appointed re-granting agency, is responsible for promoting, collecting applications, developing, coordinating and administering the program in Butts, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Jasper, Lamar, Newton , Rockdale and Spalding Counties in accordance with State regulations.  This statewide arts program is designed to encourage local collaborations between artists, arts organizations, and non-arts organizations, in order to serve a broad range of Georgia 's residents.  Funding is open to any non-profit organization or unit of local government.  Ideally, Grassroots Arts Projects create new opportunities for citizens to experience the arts, while fostering greater awareness and developing local partnerships in the arts.  GAP also aims to have a positive impact on overall community development in these growing counties.  Funded projects must be accessible to the general public, must provide 50% of the total project cost as a cash match for the grant, and projects must be completed by June 30, 2009. The Grassroots Advisory Committee of 20 volunteers representing all ten counties in the region, met October 25th to determine and recommend funding allocations.  The Committee, which was comprised of individuals with a variety of backgrounds in areas such as tourism, as artist, educators, journalists, business owners, retired military, political representatives, homemakers, and medical professionals, faced a very difficult task with over $70,000 in art grant funding requests and only $47,674.63 available to re-grant.  Primary consideration was given to applications reflecting art projects with a commitment to EXCELLENCE, ACCESSIBILITY, EDUCATION, COLLABORATION and SUPPORT FOR LOCAL ARTISTS.  Projects with the potential for lasting impact and positive change took precedence.   Information on the GAP is available from Arts Clayton by contacting SaraCookson at 770-473-5775  or   artline@artsclayton.org.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Four Coweta Dancers in GA Youth Ballet's Nutcracker

Schultz 770-583-3258     November 6, 2008   Four Coweta Dancers in GA Youth Ballet's Performance of Nutcracker        According to Mary Caroline Moore of the Georgia Youth Ballet, there will be four Coweta County dancers in this year's four performances of the famed Nutcracker.  Her daugher, Emily Moore, who has performed in many of the GYB's productions during the past several years, has graduated and is now dancing in college!  But her sister, Ann Moore, is still here and she will be one of the Nutcracker performers, dancing as a sheep in the Court of the Sugar Plum Fairy in all four of the shows.  Ann lives in Newnan.        Emily Ward of Senoia will be dancing as the Dream Fairy in two of the shows, and as the lead Russian in the other two shows.  Olivia Jenkins from Sharpsburg will be the shepherdess in two shows, and the Arabian in two shows.  The fourth Cowetan, Raegan Barnhill of Sharpsburg, who is a former GYB student and now is one of the teachers, will be a dancer in the Snow and Flowers scene.  According to Moore, this is the first time a teacher has ever been one of the performers in the Ballet corps.         All four of  the shows will be held at Patriot Hall in Sandy Creek High School.  The first show will be Family Night on Friday, December 12 at 7:30 PM.  Tickets for this show are $8.  The other three shows will be on Saturday December 13 at 2:30 PM and 8:00 PM, and on Sunday, December 14 at 2:30 PM.  The ticket prices for these shows will be $15 for adults and $12 for students (and also senior citizens).        Information on the Georgia Youth Ballet is available on their website  http://www.gyb.us        Sandy Creek High School is located at 360 Jenkins Road in Tyrone in Fayette County.           The photograph below shows the four Coweta performers. Pictured (left to right) are Olivia Jenkins as Shepherdess, Raegan Barnhill (sitting) as Flowers, Emily Ward as Dream Fairy and Ann Moore (kneeling) as Court.

PEACHTREE CITY, GEORGIA – October 30, 2008:  As part of their 2008-2009 season, Voices will be presenting "Christmas Mist" on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 7:30 pm.  They will be returning to The Wadsworth Auditorium for this second concert and will be offering their now traditional Post-Concert "Meet & Greet" Reception (approximately 9:30 pm.)  The concert will be preceded by a special photo opportunity with "The Christmas Fairy" at 6:30 pm.

 

Voices launched their current season on September 4 with the presentation of their Fall Benefit at the same venue.  Ms. Ugarte, Artistic Director, talks about the process behind the conceptual music selection:  "The way the pieces are chosen goes back to that flow I continuously refer to.  There is an idea behind the music and, for this two-year season, the idea spreads through out the four concerts," as it evolves and reaches full fruition in September of 2009.  Referring to the unique blend of music and styles that Voices is now known for, Ugarte explains:  "It is most important how a piece precedes the prior work and follows the next."  The concert will have a pondering tone to it.  "To give you a hint, we will start with 'I Wonder as I Wonder.'  A question is presented.  Towards the end, an answer will emerge; though, it ought to be different for each individual, as it is ultimately a personal experience, but most definitely a miracle of love and of joy for all."

Schultz 770-583-3258     October 29, 2008   Southeastern Ballet Announces Performances of Le Petit Nutcracker Sweet:   Tastes To Be Provided at Asley Park on Nov. 29 & 30   Full Performance at Classical Dance Studio On Dec. 6 & 13       The Southeastern Ballet Company has announced several performances of Le Petit Nutcracker Sweet.  They will first give you a taste by performing some of the highlights at Ashley Park (on November 29 & 30), and then they will perform the entire production at the Classical Dance Studio on December 6 & 13.        Details are provided in this news released issued by the Southeastern Ballet Company:       Southeastern Ballet Company (SBC), principal dancers and soloists will perform highlights from its upcoming production, Le Petit Nutcracker Sweet, along with guest students from Classical Dance Theatre (CDT), at the Tree Lighting festivities at Ashley Park in Newnan on Saturday, November 29. SBC and CDT dancers will take the outdoor stage between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. that evening.       On Sunday, November 30, SBC and CDT dancers will perform excerpts from Le Petit Nutcracker Sweet at Barnes and Noble bookstore, also in Ashley Park. Show times are 3:00, 4:00, and 5:00 p.m. In addition, Barnes and Noble will be hosting a bookfair to benefit SBC, a non-profit professional dance company, based in Newnan. Barnes and Noble customers making purchases that weekend can support the work of SBC in the community by printing out and using one of the attached vouchers or by mentioning voucher # 393876 to the cashier upon checkout. Schultz 770-583-3258   October 28, 2008     Lacuna Group To Perform Shakespeare's Coriolanus On November 1    Donations At Door Will Benefit Newnan Theatre         The actors in Dale Lyles' Lacuna Group are excited by how well their outdoor afternoon performances at Newnan's Greenville Street Park went on Saturday (October 25) and they are looking forward to their next performance this coming Saturday (November 1).  Here is what Lyles has to say:        "The Lacuna Group will perform William Shakespeare's Coriolanus at the Newnan Community Theatre Company on First Avenue in Newnan on Saturday, November 1, at 8:00.  This is a benefit performance for NCTC; donations will be accepted at the door.      The all-male production performed successfully last weekend in the Greenville Street Park with two afternoon performances.      'Audiences really enjoyed the play,' said Dale Lyles, one of the cast members.  'They were struck by the timelessness of the political processes Shakespeare describes: the ill-tempered war hero, the charges of elitism, the manipulation of the common herd.  They also were surprised at how fresh the language is.  Everyone thinks of Shakespeare as "hard", but most people have not had the experience of seeing his plays performed.'      The play, three hours long, is for mature audiences only.  Younger children will not understand the complex political maneuverings of the characters."        Information on the Newnan Theatre is available at http://www.newnantheatre.com.        Information on the Lacuna Group is available at http://www.lacunagroup.org.

Schultz 770-583-3258   October 28, 2008   The Gallery Players To Perform at Riverwood Studios in Senoia   Noted Improv Troupe Part of Susan Steadman's Offshoot Productions             This year the arts suddenly exploded in the Coweta County City of Senoia and they show no signs of stopping.  The latest exciting news is that the highly acclaimed Fayette-County-based improvisation troupe The Gallery Players (which is part of the prestigious Offshoot Productions of Dr. Susan Steadman) will be performing in Senoia at the Riverwood Studios.  And one of these performers is none other than Senoia's own Joey Waldrop, who was one of the previous Senoia arts news-makers when he was accepted into this improv troupe earlier this year!         This latest arts news triumph for Senoia was announced yesterday by Senoia's Claudia Wood, who was one of the leaders in Art Senoia earlier this year, one of the greatest of the explosions!  Here is her news release:        October 27, 2008 For Immediate Release   Senoia Hosts Improv Performance        Take a little time out of your busy fall schedule to enjoy a funny, refreshing afternoon of professional comedy right here in our own area. The Gallery Players, an improvisational troupe from Offshoot Productions, will perform "Senoia Autumn Improv" at Riverwood Studios in Senoia on Sunday, November 16th at 4:00 p.m.        An "improv" performance is a series of scenes in which the actors improvise everything - from characters to events to lines - so that each performance is unique. The actors rehearse for many hours to prepare for whatever details the audience might throw at them. Schultz 770-583-3258     October 28, 2008   A Sanders Family Christmas Coming to Arts Centre        There will be a lot of holiday programs this year in and near Coweta so now would be a good time to start marking your calendar.  One which looks interesting is the performance of A Sanders Family Christmas at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County on December 13 at 7 PM.  The Centre's events calendar section describes it in these words:        "A Sanders Family Christmas" is gospel sing and testimonial set in December, 1941 shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This is the last opportunity for the Sanders family to sing together as Denis the youngest boy has joined the Navy and getting ready to leave. It is a wonderful telling of the Christmas story in Luke:  the story heart felt and humorous and all wrapped up in a great big Christmas bow. A great show to bring grandchildren or grand parents to see, you'll hear some of your favorite Christmas songs and few you haven't heard before. Schultz 770-583-3258     October 27, 2008     Images Gallery Announces Stained Glass Workshop Schedule   Plus Future Renovations and Expansions        Deborah Smith, the Owner/Operator of the Images Fine Art Gallery in Moreland, recently stated that various renovations and expansions are underway that will in the near future lead to improvements and increases in the operations there.  The specifics will be announced soon.  At present, there is a curtailed activity which is limited to stained glass workshops taught by Newnan artist Kay Moore of Sookie's Glass Art Studio.  Speaking of stained glass, Smith has recently become a real fan of stained glass and is herself (along with several other members of her family) one of Moore's students.  And, Moore in answer to a recent question on the subject, ridiculed the myth that the art of making stained glass windows was lost after the end of the Middle Ages.  It is still very much alive and well, she says, especially here in Coweta County!         The information below about the Stained Glass Classes at Images is found on their website http://www.imagesgallery.biz/classes.html.  (Moore's website is found at http://sookiesglassartstudio.blogspot.com.)  There have also been changes in Deborah Smith's phone number.  She has discontinued both of her home telephones and now only uses her cell phone, which is 678-850-1868.  Her email address has also changed:  the new one is imagesart1@live.com.    Stained Glass | Instructor, Kay Moore "...maintaining rigid flexibility" Class Schedule: Monday 10am - 1pm Tuesday 6pm - 9pm Wednesday 2pm - 5pm Thursday 9am - noon Saturday 10am - 1pm Saturday 2pm - 5pm Visit Sookies Blog Spot to see what is happening in studio.
