Man In Muddy Creek Author John Hickman Coming to CABSE

 

     John Hickman of Newnan was one of the participants in the Writers Symposium held in Moreland in 2003 sponsored by the Erskine Caldwell Museum.  He spoke of the novels he had written but at that time none of them had yet been published.  Well, Hickman has been  flying high ever since the first one was published in December 2006,

Man In Muddy Creek.  He is very proud of his book and is devoting considerable effort to publicizing it so that others can enjoy it too.  He firmly believes in book signings so that it should come as no surprise that he will be an enthusiastic participant in the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE), which will be a special feature of the New Grantville Days Festival held the third weekend in September.  All Coweta authors of a published book have been invited; twenty have so far agreed to attend with the total expected to be about 22.  The CABSE will be held on Main Street in Grantville from

10 AM through 5 PM on Saturday September 15 and from 12 Noon through 5 PM on Sunday September 16.  The CABSE will provide the public with an opportunity to meet Coweta County's authors and to acquire an autographed copies of their books.  The CABSE is unique because there has never before been a book signing to which all Coweta authors have been invited.  Information on CABSE is available from its Co-ordinator, Forrest Schultz, at 770-583-3258 or schultz_forrest@yahoo.com.  Information on the New Grantville Days Festival is available at their website http://grantvilleday.tripod.com.  (The New Grantville Days Festival was formerly called "Grantville Day".)

James and Sybil Laurent Participating in CABSE

 

     James and Sybil Laurent of Newnan are best known for their art works and their musical performances.  But these are not their only talents -- they are also writers (and not just of music).  They are active members of the Coweta Writers Group and they will be two of the participating authors in the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza in September.  James will be there to autograph his book on guitar playing and Sybil will be signing her cookbook Pumpkin Bread and Bologna Too.  (They are also very concerned about health and dietary matters.) 

 

     James is best known for the famous painting he did last year of the Black Pearl.  Info on this and other art-related accomplishments can be found on the Laurents' website www.mystore.cc/stores/sybilsartattic.

Newnan Musician Jerry Yates Wins New "Emerald Award",

 

Releases New Song, and Establishes New Website

 

     Newnan Musician Jerry Yates is back in the news again.  He has won another "Emerald Award", this time for the month of June, for the most played songs compiled by the Roots Gospel Chart of the Roots Music Association.  And he has established a new website, www.indieheaven.com/artists/jerryyates. And his promoter, Rhon-Bob, has announced his newest song, TGIS -- Thank God It's Sunday, whose title was chosen as a "take-off" on the popular expression, TGIF -- Thank God It's Friday:

Lifestyles Readers Rate Flint the #1 Art Gallery in Southern Arc

 

     On Page 10 of the July issue of Lifestyles magazine the Editor Monica Gaddy provides a helpful and lively discussion of the rating system of various things by their readers -- and she strongly stresses that it is the READERS, not the staff of the magazine that is doing the rating.  On page 48 is shown the result of the rating for art galleries:  the Flint Gallery at Panoply in downtown Newnan is rated as the Best Art Gallery in the Southern Arc.  Information on the gallery is available on its website at www.flintgallery.com. 

 

     What is very interesting about this is that the Flint Gallery is definitely not your usual art gallery.  The paintings displayed in the Flint Gallery are found on the walls of the showroom and workroom of the Panoply Interior Design and Home Decor.  And this is not the only such gallery in Newnan.  The walls of the Embassy Row Coffee House are used to display the paintings of the monthly themed shows of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association.  And the art gallery at the Arts Centre is inside of what was designed to be a performing arts centre.  So, strictly speaking, Coweta County does not actually have an art gallery, as that term is normally used.  Therefore it is especially noteworthy that Flint was chosen as the #1 gallery although it is by no means surprising because the paintings hanging in it are first rate and are situated in a great environment.

Powers' Crossroads Country Fair and Arts Festival is acclaimed as one of the outstanding events of its kind in North America. Located 12 miles west of Newnan Ga. on Ga. Hwy. 34 West. GPS coordinates are: N33 20.332 W84 58.778. See map here.

The Powers' Crossroads Festival gates are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Saturday through Monday, Labor Day Weekend. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and military personnel, $3 for children ages 5-12 and free for children age 4 and under. Free parking is available with free shuttle bus to the main gate. Powers' Crossroads is located on Georgia Highway 34, about 12 miles west of Newnan.

250 juried artists and crafsmen from all over the United States exhibit and sell their creative work.

Entertainment is continuous featuring country, gospel, folk and contemporary music, clogging and a variety of entertainment is featured.

Food is provided by local church and civic groups with a variety of country cooking. Favorites include pork, turkey and chicken Bar B Q. Southern vegetable plates, sausage and biscuits, hamburgers, hot dogs, fried fruit pies, vegetarian type foods and much more.

Highlights include demonstrations of plantation skills such as blacksmithing, sorghum syrup mill, and the original Powers' Plantation grist mill.

Children are entertained in a special children's park area with adult supervision.

FREE PARKING/Shuttle busses are provided for visitors - The festival is operated by six Coweta County non-profit civic organizations who volunteer thousands of hours each year to make the festival a success.

Todd Hardage Participating in CABSE

 

Authored Mystery Novel Twin Oaks and Poetry Book Word Portraits

 

     There are now nineteen Coweta authors of published books who have agreed to participate in the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE) coming up in September.  One of these is Coweta Writers Group (CWG) member Todd Hardage, who in 2003 had his Twin Oaks Southern history/mystery novel published by what was then a little known publisher, Publish America, thereby becoming the pioneer among Cowetans in using this publisher.  In December his second book was published by them, Word Portraits, a collection of his poems.  The CABSE will provide the public with an opportunity to meet Hardage (and the other participating authors) and acquire autographed copies of their books.

 

     The CABSE will be conducted as a special feature of the New Grantville Days Festival, which will be held on Main Street in Grantville during the third weekend of September.  The CABSE will be held from 10 AM through 5 PM on Saturday September 15 and from 12 Noon through 5 PM on Sunday September 16.  Admission to the CABSE and the rest of the New Grantville Days Festival is free of charge.

Performance of "America The Great" Play Overcomes Last Minute Obtacle

 

     It was time for the Grantville Playmakers Fourth of July play "America The Great" to be performed and David Wilson, the Playwright/Director/Producer, was frantic because one of the main characters had not shown up and no one knew why.  He finally called in a substitute because "the play must go on".  Ironically, there was something appropriate about this because George Washington  had to overcome similar obstacles in the Revolutionary War -- he too was confronted with "no-shows", e.g.  troops which were promised but did not arrive, but he persevered, thereby embodying the "Spirit of '76".

 

     The resulting delay in the performance was filled with some appropriate impromptu humor.  A man in the audience got up and told a George Washington joke.  Then Wilson recounted a recent episode in which, while he was dressed in his George Washington costume, he rearended a car while driving in Newnan.  The other driver was shocked to see George Washington emerging from the driver's seat of the offending vehicle, and you can imagine the laughs of the insurance company when they found out.  One more interesting day in the life of Coweta County !  Wilson decided, as he himself stated, not to let the no-show get him down but to follow the motto:  If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.  Actually, it was worth the delay to hear this really funny true story.

 

     There has already been plenty of articles published about the plot of the play so there is no need to repeat it here.  What does require comment is how amazingly appropriate Grantville's Meadows log cabin (and the surrounding grass and trees) was for the "stage" of this play.  Several scenes in the play occur in front of a house -- there was no need to create a stage set for that; the cabin itself was the set.  Most of the scenes occur in a sylvan setting, which again required no set construction; nature provided that.  The magnificent costumes worn by the cast were especially impressive against this natural background, which made it seem that the actions in the play were really happening rather than being acted.  The only thing which needed construction was the curtain, which was composed of several shower curtains sewn together side by side with the loops sliding along a rope tied to two trees in front of the cabin. 

 

     After the play Wilson announced that instead of staging another Barbara Nolan comic vampire drama, his Halloween play this year will deal with the notorious John Wallace, who committed the infamous "Murder in Coweta County" recounted by Margaret Anne Barnes in her book by that title.  Colby Doler distributed announcements about the World War II play "We Are Brothers", which will performed in December.

IN MEMORIAM For Barbara Scruggs on Southside Arts Agenda

 

     The importance of Barbara Scruggs for the cultural renaissance of the Southern Crescent is indicated by the prominence given to an IN MEMORIAM for her in this week's issue of the Southside Arts Agenda online news service:

 

 

IN MEMORIAM BARBARA SCRUGGS   Along with our friends in Grantville, we mourn the loss of a dear friend and contributor to the Southside ARTS Agenda, Mrs. Barbara Scruggs, in her 75th year.   We last spoke with Barbara on June 18th, the day before her sudden passing regarding the 'Artist Choice' traveling exhibit which she championed and organized.    We will miss her valued assistance, her creativity, but mostly her energy Barbara Scruggs was not only a good artist but also a good organizer. She strongly supported the Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA) which she served in various capacities including being its delegate to the the Newnan-Coweta Arts Council, where she served for a time as Secretary.  She was also a strong advocate of co-operation among the various Southside art associations for which reason she was very active in the Southern Crescent Alliance of Visual Artists, serving twice as its President (in 2004 and 2007).   Barbara will be missed; her passing is a grievous loss for the Coweta and Southside arts scene.

Anne Turner to Autograph "Good Days" Novel at CABSE

 

     Anne Turner first came to the attention of the Coweta arts scene in 2003 when her first novel was published, She's Had Some Good Days, about a group of contemporary African-American young women.  She enjoys talking with people about her story and conducting autograph parties, so it is not surprising that she has accepted the invitation to participate in the first-ever Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE).  Eighteen other Coweta writers of published books have also agreed to attend.  This CABSE will give the public an opportunity to meet Coweta's authors and acquire authographed copies of their books.
