92 Year Old Mary Busser from Newnan is Coming to CABSE

Is it ever too late to write a book??  Mary Busser of Newnan does not think so.  Mary, who turned 92 this month, has just had her first book published AND she is at work on a second one!!  The book, entitled, My Name Is Mary, is a collection of her remembrances, her comments on various things, and her poems.  Because she enjoys sharing these thoughts, reminiscences, and poems, she will be participating in the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza in order to give people the opportunity to acquire an autographed copy of her book and also to hear her read some poetry from the microphone.  The CABSE will be held on Saturday September 15 from 10 AM through 5 PM and on Sunday September 16 from 12 Noon through 5 PM as a special feature of the New Grantville Days Festival.  The authors will be seated behind a long row of tables at the end of Main Street in Grantville, which is a small city in southern Coweta County located at Exit 35 in Interstate 85.  There will be 20 other authors participating.

Info on Mary Busser and her book is avaiable on her website www.mynameismary.net.  Info on the CABSE is available from Forrest Schultz at 770-583-3258 or schultz_forrest@yahoo.com.  Info on Grantville Day, the original name of the New Grantville Days Festival, is available on their website http://grantvilleday.tripod.com

         Once
Once I was very foolish
And I searched for a magic thing
A magic thing—an illusive thing,
Like a bird on the wing
And the Eternal Fountain of Spring.
I thought all things would come to me
That I could reach out and touch a star
Yes, touch a star and hold a cloud
And dreams are what they are.
Then I found a rainbow
And I watched the colors blend
So I put away my foolish things
I knew there would be no end.
Yes—I put away my foolish things
But softly, as a Madonna holds her child,
I knew I'd need them
As I started down life's second mile.
And now I know—
I can dance on the moon
I can swing from the stars
And through my laughter and tears
As I go down each mile
I'll always cherish
This part of me that's a child.

Video Game Contest and Dance Contest at "Grantville Day"

There are a lot of things that are new about Grantville Day this year:  a new name (The New Grantville Days Festival), a new sponsor (The Grantville Veterans Association), a new Chairman (Sandra Luttrell), and a new time (third weekend in September) but one thing that remains the same is that contests are an important feature of this annual community festival.  This year there will be two contests, both theld on Saturday September 15:  a Video Game Contest, which will be held throughout the day, and a Dance Contest, which will be held at 8 PM as part of the traditional Saturday night Street Dance.  Although it is not exactly a contest, it might be good to note that there will also be held on Saturday (from 10 AM thru 2 PM) a Silent Cake Auction in the new ice cream store which just opened on Main Street, which is owned by Luttrell.  Information about these contests and anything else pertaining to Grantville Day is available from her at sangalasands@aol.com or by phone at 770-583-9013 or by dropping in to her store or by visting the Grantville Day website http://grantvilleday.tripod.com.

The Legacy Theatre has generated a lot of excitement as the first full
time professional theatre on the south side of Atlanta. For Executive
Producer Bethany Hayes Smith, the Legacy Theatre is the fulfillment of
a life-long dream to start a theatre company. Along with her husband,
Mark Smith, Artistic Director, they are seeing that dream realized.
"We are committed to providing this area with excellent entertainment
and we are passionate about the theatre being an elegant theatrical
experience!" Bethany and Mark have a long list of professional credits
in theatre companies across the country. They moved to Georgia from
New York when Mark accepted a position to teach theatre and film at
Landmark Christian School. As professional actors and educators, the
Smiths also have a desire to train and nourish the next generation of
theatre performers and patrons. This is an excellent opportunity for
area schools to experience professional theatre in an intimate and
convenient location. Careful research and planning has gone into the
design of this beautiful new theatre located on Highway 74 in Tyrone.
The intimate theatre has 176 custom designed traditional theatre
stadium seats in a rich purple fabric with a velvet main curtain dyed
to match. The 50 foot stage is framed by a Hollywood designed 25 foot
tall proscenium arch in an art deco design.

The Legacy Theatre stages five productions each year giving
opportunities for professional actors, technicians, directors and
choreographers from the Atlanta area and beyond to work.
Legacy Children's Theatre is a theatre for young audiences specializing
in shows that entertain as well as educate.
Legacy's Broadway Workshop gives children through teens an opportunity
to work with theatre professionals and develop musical theatre skills.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Forensic Artist to Address NCAA

Coweta   arts   tidbits
The  Successor  To  Newnan-Coweta  Arts  Council  News  Releases

Composed By:  Forrest W. Schultz  770-583-3258  schultz_forrest@yahoo.com

August 25, 2007

Forensic Artist To Address NCAA in September

In Coweta County, at least to those who are conversant with the arts scene, the initials NCAA do not refer to something athletic, but to one of the oldest, largest, and most influential of Coweta's arts organizations, the Newnan-Coweta Art Association, which boast a membership of over 200 visual artists. The September meeting of  the group should be rather interesting and unsual because it will feature a forensic artist, Marla Lawson, whose talents have been helpful both to the Atlanta Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) in the apprehension of criminals.  The meeting will be held at the Senior Center on Hospital Road at 7:30 PM September 20, 2007.  Information on NCAA is available on their website www.newcaa.com

Their August newsletter provides this information on Marla Lawson:

The GBI enlisted Lawson's talents
in 1997, but the self-taught artist's
career began decades before. For
15 years, she rendered composite
drawings of suspects based on
descriptions by their victims for
the Atlanta Police Department. In
1991 though, she decided to call it
quits.
That hiatus was brief. A robbery at a sandwich shop where she worked
forced her to break out the pad and pencil once again.
"I went home that night, and sketched the robbery suspect and turned
it over to the local authorities," said Lawson. "I realized that the
private sector was no place for me. I needed to be doing something to
help others."
And help is what Lawson did. The suspect, who robbed the eatery,
also hit a gift shop down the road. Based on her drawing, the robber
was apprehended.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Coweta's "Young Artists" Group Announces Fall Program

Coweta's "Young Artists" Group Announces Fall Program

One of the oldest and most successful of all of Coweta County's arts organizations is the Young Artists of Newnan and Coweta County founded by and directed by Bette Hickman, who has just released this information about the group's upcoming program this fall:

The Young Artists of Newnan & Coweta County
Welcome Letter & Information Packet

August 15, 2007

Dear Young Artists and Parents:

We can hardly believe summer is almost over and school has already begun!  The world is spinning faster and faster each year it seems, grin!

Class Days & Times
Art classes begin the first Wednesday and Thursday after Labor Day, September 5th & 6th, 2007.  Class times are 4:15pm - 6:00pm.  Students come only one day a week. Please let us know ASAP which day you prefer - Wednesdays or Thursdays.  We will do our best to accommodate your preference.  Classes meet at the Harriet Alexander Art Center located off of Hospital Road in Newnan, next to the Tommy Thompson Senior Citizen Center near the Coweta County Recreation Department. (Please let us know if you need further directions to get here.)  You will park in the parking lot shared by the Senior Center and our classes meet upstairs.

Cost
Due to increased costs of offering classes, we find it necessary to increase the Art Fees this year from $35.00 to the new $40.00.  (If we are correct - this is the first increase in the past 7 years and only the 2nd increase in the overall program's history.)  It is not something we do on a regular basis.  We appreciate your understanding.  If you have more than 1 child enrolled in class you will still receive your discount - 2 or more children in the program will cost $35.00 per student.  If you have any questions or concerns - please check with Miss Teri or Miss Bet te.  We can make arrangements and work with you but we must know ahead of time.

Miss Bet te and I have worked diligently over the summer in preparation for this new Art Year.  We are extremely excited about some of the new projects we will be working on!  We think you will enjoy these, as well.

This year, we will host an "Open House - Registration - Orientation Day" on Tuesday, September 4th, 4 - 6pm.  We are asking all of our new students to please come and register this day with us.  Any returning students who would like to come are invited, as well.  We will have a little "meet & greet" and take registrations at that time.  You will also pay September fees at that time.

In this information packet, we are including a registration form that you may complete and bring with you or email back to me, if you choose.  HOWEVER, I must know right away if you are planning on returning!!!!!!

Supply List will follow in a few days.  Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Artfully yours,
Miss Bet te & Miss Teri

 August 20, 2007

New Children's Author Holly Moulder Coming to CABSE

There have been so many books published by Coweta authors that it is becoming difficult to keep up with all of them!  The Co-ordinator of the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE), who has the job of inviting all Coweta authors of a published book to attend, has just discovered another one, first time author Holly Moulder of Sharpsburg.  Moulder, a former teacher at White Oak Elementary School, quit teaching in order to write a delightful book for children, Eyes of the Calusa.

There will be 21 Coweta writers participating in the CABSE, which will give the public an opportunity to meet them, talk with them about their writing, and acquire an autographed copy of their books.  The CABSE will be a special feature of the New Grantville Days Festival, which will be held the third weekend of September.  The hours of the CABSE are 10 AM thru 5 PM on Saturday September 15 and 12 Noon thru 5 PM on Sunday September 16.  Info on the CABSE is available from Forrest Schultz at 770-583-3258 or schultz_forrest@yahoo.com.  Info on the New Grantville Days Festival, formerly called Grantville Day, is available at http://grantvilleday.tripod.com.

Here is more info on Moulder's book:

Book News from White Pelican Press!

White Pelican Press announces the February 2007 release of "Eyes of the Calusa" by Sharpsburg resident and former Coweta County teacher Holly Moulder.  This innovative work of historical fiction is written for middle grade readers, and can be read for individual enjoyment or used for classroom instruction.  Mrs. Moulder has designed a classroom guide based on the new Georgia Performance Standards to make her novel very teacher friendly.

Meticulously researched and creatively written, the story provides a fresh perspective into the lives and events of the opening years of the 18th century.  The story begins in 1720 on the Golden Coast of Southwest Florida where fierce Calusa Indians ruled their mighty empire.  Pirates patrolled the area, looking for Indians to capture and sell in the slave auctions of Charles Town, S.C.

One evening as the Calusa girl Mara, and her little sister search the shoreline for a lost toy, pirates come ashore seeking human treasure.  Mara is kidnapped and dragged aboard Captain Hannah Dunne's pirate frigate, The Devil Ray.  In the months that follow, Mara's journey takes her far from her Calusa home to the slave quarters of an indigo plantation in the lowlands of South Carolina.  Along the way, Mara uses the ancient powers of the Calusas to calm a terrible storm at sea.  She is taken to a pirate hideout where she learns about the infamous Blackbeard.  Later on the plantation, she uncovers secret plans for a slave rebellion and is forced to make desperate choices. Finally, Mara makes the most important discovery of all:  the value of her own freedom.

Mrs. Moulder will be conducting book signings at locales throughout the area.  She is scheduled to make multi-media presentations about her novel and the writing process at elementary schools in Coweta County and in Florida.

Copies of "Eyes of the Calusa" are available through the author at the address above.  The novel will also be available soon through Amazon.com.

Legacy Theatre Announces 2007 - 2008 Season

Well, it looks like Mark and Bethany Smith of Newnan have scheduled a lot of work for themselves in another busy season at their Legacy Theatre in Tyrone.  It would be advisable for anyone planning to attend any of these performances to make their decisions soon and be sure to purchase tickets well in advance if this year's season will be anything like last year's when shows were sold out  way ahead of time.  Here is the schedule for the upcoming season provided by the Southside Arts Agenda

2007 - 2008 Season
