[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Newnan Theatre Announces November Shows

Coweta   arts   tidbits
The  Successor  To  Newnan-Coweta  Arts  Council  News  Releases

Newnan Theatre Announces November Shows

Dave Dorrell, the Artistic Director of the Newnan Theatre, has released t he following information about the schedule for November:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The next production at Newnan Theatre Company is the final offering in the Popcorn Theatre Series for Children – THE RELUCTANT DRAGON, adapted from the classic tale by Kenneth Grahame by Mary Hall Surface.
The village of Guildermere blames the dragon who lives upon the Downs for dying crops and sour milk. But this dragon is a peace-loving, poetry-spouting fellow who would much prefer a cup of tea to a battle. When Saint George arrives, the dragon and his young friend Glaston face quite a challenge indeed. While true to the spirit and language of the charming original, this adaptation embraces the dramatic power of what happens when misunderstanding escalates into prejudice and violence. This show is appropriate for all ages.
THE RELUCTANT DRAGON opens Friday, November 2 and continues November 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11. Friday and Saturday evening shows begin at 8pm, and Sunday matinees are at 2:30pm.
Ticket prices are: Adults - $10, Children (14 and under) and Senior Citizens (55+) - $10. You may call for reservations at 770-683-6282 or order your tickets online at www.newnantheatre.com.
COMING NOVEMBER 29 – THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE!
Gilbert and Sullivan's popular comedic operetta hits the stage in Newnan and runs through December 15.
Newnan Theatre Company is Newnan's only community theatre and Downtown Newnan's only LIVE theatre. Visit our website at www.newnantheatre.com for more information.
PHOTO CAPTION: The three main characters in THE RELUCTANT DRAGON from left - Alex Naughton as St. George, Davis McCondichie as Glaston, and Kyle Abraham as the Dragon.

[Follow up to yesterday's Tidbit -- Here is the Spencers Official Press Release]

The Spencers: Theatre Of Illusion
Theatrical Spectacle for the Entire Family!
November 2, 2007, 7:30pm
The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts – Newnan, GA
Ticket information – 770.252.5456

PRESS RELEASE

Things aren't always what they seem, especially when the magic of illusion is involved.
Award-winning magicians, Kevin and Cindy Spencer, will bring their cutting-edge illusions, choreography, comedy, scenery, lighting and music to the Centre for Performing Arts in Newnan, in a family-friendly production called Theatre of Illusion.
The Spencers have been compared to David Copperfield, David Blaine and Criss Angel but critics have written they are a unique blend of "Broadway meets Rock n Roll" featuring spectacular illusions you won't see anywhere else in the world.
In January of 2003, the Spencers "vanished" the Stanley Cup for the National Hockey League as a kickoff to the NHL All-Star Weekend in Fort Lauderdale, FL, making magic and sports history.
They did make the cup reappear, along with Hockey Hall of Fame legend Larry Robinson.
And in January 2006, they made Audio Adrenaline, contemporary Christian music artists, appear before a cheering throng of 8,000 fans.
With one of the largest touring illusion companies in the United States, the Spencers transport more that 10 tons of state-of-the-art illusions and special effects from city to city.
The Spencers high-tech stage show includes dazzling special effects, puzzling feats of legerdemain, cutting-edge illusions and side-splitting comedy.
They have spent more than a decade defining the art of illusion by infusing magic with movement and cloaking it in music and physical expression.  As a storyteller uses words to captivate an audience, the Spencers combine scenery, music, lighting, special effects, audience interaction and illusions to produce a powerful theatrical experience for the entire family.
The Spencers work with some of the leading inventors, creators and builders in the industry to incorporate original never-before-seen illusions into their production.
They have been named Performing Arts Entertainers of the Year six times, sharing the title with only one other magician, David Copperfield, and holding the title longer than any other performer.
The Spencers have performed for sold out audiences throughout the United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mexico, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia.  Don't miss this show - You Won't Believe Your Eyes!

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Fall Art Walk in Downtown Newnan on November 2

Fall Art Walk To Be Held in Downtown Newnan On November 2

One of Newnan's great traditions and contributions to the Coweta arts scene is the semi-annual Art Walks held each Spring and Fall around downtown Newnan.  Many artists -- from both near and far -- will be displaying their works in and in front of the various places of business in the heart of Newnan.  These Art Walks are sponsored by Main Street Newnan.  The Art Walk for the Fall of 2007 will be held on Friday November 2 from 5 PM through 8 PM.  This is a great time to be taking an evening stroll in Newnan – the weather is comfortably cool.

Of all the businesses involved in the Art Walk, it will probably by Panoply Interior Design and Home Decor that will boast the most paintings because for some months now their walls have been adorned with so much art that they are calling it the Flint Gallery.   Another business which always has its walls adorned with visual art is the Espresso Lane Coffee House where the monthly themed exhibits of t he Newnan-Coweta Art Association are displayed.

Information on the various programs of Main Street Newnan can be found by visiting their website,  www.mainstreetnewnan.com.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Farewell Party For Dan Blake on October 26 at Renae Barton Art Gallery

Coweta   arts   tidbits
The  Successor  To  Newnan-Coweta  Arts  Council  News  Releases

Composed By:  Forrest W. Schultz  770-583-3258  schultz_forrest@yahoo.com

 October 17, 2007

Farewell Party For Dan Blake at Renae Barton Gallery on October 26

Artist Dan Blake  has found Coweta County to be a good place to produce art but not a good place to market it.  Therefore he regretfully will be leaving us in a few weeks.  During the past several weeks some of his art work has been displayed at the new Renae Barton Art Gallery (located inside the Shops of Beard & Co.) on Jefferson Street in Newnan.  More of his art works are being added to his display there in preparation for a special Farewell Party for him to be held on October 26 from 6 PM through 8 PM.  Perhaps Blake's best known and admired pieces are his Indian art works, which is not surprising because he has spent several years doing anthropological studies of Indian tribes in the Southwestern United States and in South America during which time he came to appreciate them and their art.  Perhaps the most interesting work in the Barton Gallery is a very large piece which sits on the floor and displays what looks like a very large 10 number  telephone pad, with various objects and sayings interspersed between the numbers in a manner reminiscent of some of the art of Gerald Byrd from Carrollton.

Not all of Blake's art works will be found in the Gallery.  He is actually giving some of it away!  To check this out go to the building he has been renting, the former Manget Brannon building (across the street from the Newnan Theatre), and you will see piles of his works with a sign saying "Free Art".

One of the legacies Blake will leave behind him is the concept of displaying paintings on the walls of the Espresso Lane Coffee House -- something he did which was then followed by the Newnan-Coweta Art Association in their monthly themed exhibits.

For more information on the art of Dan Blake one can visit his website at

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Tribute To Barbara Scruggs At SCAVA Exhibit on Dec. 6

Coweta   arts   tidbits
The  Successor  To  Newnan-Coweta  Arts  Council  News  Releases

Composed By:  Forrest W. Schultz  770-583-3258  schultz_forrest@yahoo.com

October 17, 2007

Tribute to Barbara Scruggs at SCAVA Exhibit at Espresso Lane on Dec. 6

The Southside has been mourning the passing of Coweta artist Barbara Scruggs and remembering her great accomplishments by means of various tributes.  Since Barbara was very active in the Southern Crescent Alliance of Visual Artists (SCAVA) including serving as its President in 2004 and 2007, it is quite appropriate that one of these tributes will by held during the time when this year's SCAVA Traveling Exhibit is finishing its course during the last month of this year at the Expresso Lane Coffee Shop on the Courthouse Square in downtown Newnan.  This tribute is sponsored by the Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA), which places monthly themed exhibits of paintings by its artists on the walls of Espresso Lane. For the month of December the paintings placed there by NCAA will be those of this year's SCAVA Exhibit instead.  The Tribute to Barbara will be held on Thursday evening December 6 from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.   ALL of Barbara's friends (not just those in Coweta County) are invited to attend and to share with others their reminiscences of Barbara's contributions to the arts.

Barbara was an active member of NCAA for many years contributing her talents in various ways, including serving for several years as its delegate to the Newnan-Coweta Arts Council.  It was at her last contribution to NCAA, helping at its Second Juried Art Show several months ago at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County, that she collapsed and died shortly thereafter.

There are two very fine tributes to Barbara in print.  The Tribute by NCAA is at  www.newcaa.com/files/index.php?id=14.

The Tribute to Barbara given by the Southside Arts Agenda online news service issue for July 2, 2007 was the very first item covered in that issue.  It is shown below:

BARBARA SCRUGGS

Along with our friends in Grantville, we mourn the loss of a dear friend and contributor to the Southside ARTS Agenda, Mrs. Barbara Scruggs, in her 75th year.

We last spoke with Barbara on June 18th, the day before her sudden passing regarding the 'Artist Choice' traveling exhibit which she championed and organized.

We will miss her valued assistance, her creativity, but mostly her energy
Barbara Scruggs was not only a good artist but also a good organizer. She strongly supported the Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA) which she served in various capacities including being its delegate to the the Newnan-Coweta Arts Council, where she served for a time as Secretary.  She was also a strong advocate of co-operation among the various Southside art associations for which reason she was very active in the Southern Crescent Alliance of Visual Artists, serving twice as its President (in 2004 and 2007).

Barbara will be missed; her passing is a grievous loss for the Coweta and Southside arts scene.
