The Coweta arts community and Third District U. S. Congressman Lynn Westmoreland are very excited about the latest Coweta triumph in the arts: two Newnan High School students have won the two top prizes in this year's Third Congressional District High School Art Contest. This is the second year in a row this has happened at Newnan High, and both years the winners have been students of NHS art teacher Jodi Hobbs, who encourages her students to enter. And prior to that, when NHS was in Phil Gingrey's district, Hobbs' student Shanna Walston won the top prize in 2003. (Walston has since become a school teacher and has married artist Scott Palmer from Grantville.)

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] NITWITS Performing At Newnan Theatre On May 8, 9
Coweta Arts Tidbits The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258 April 24, 2009 Next NITWITS Shows at Newnan Theatre On May 8, 9 In addition to its regular performances of plays, the Newnan Theatre last year began presenting performances by its newly formed improvisation troupe, the NITWITS. In the improvisation performances the actors do NOT know ahead of time what they will be doing. Several of them are summoned onto a bare stage with no costumes, (usually) no props, no scripts, etc. and then are told what they must do. For instance, in a performance I saw there several months ago, one of the times they were called on stage and told, "You are a bomb squad disassembling a bomb which has ___ minutes left til it explodes. GO!" To really appreciate it, though, you have to see it, which I encourage you to do. The NITWITS are very good and very funny. Here is what the Newnan Theatre Publicity Director Dianne Olsen says about their next performances: NITWITS ADDS FRIDAY SHOW Due to popularity, Newnan Community Theatre Company's improvisational troupe, the NITWITS, have added a Friday evening performance along with their usual Saturday show. At the performance, the troupe performs a variety of comedy sketches and games. Some skits involve audience participation, with all skits you don't know what will happen next. Their next shows will be May 8 and 9. The show begins at 8 pm and admission is $5 at the door. It's open seating, so arriving around 7:30 is recommended. The hosts for the evening are Jeff Allen and Heather Hyde. NCTC is located at 24 First Avenue in downtown Newnan. For more information on the NITWITS and other events, visit their website at newnantheatre.com or call the theatre at (770) 683-6282. [Coweta Arts Tidbits] Fayette Artist Janet M. Dunn Participating in Senoia's "Art of Green" on April 25; Will Be On Senoia Radio On April 23
Coweta Arts Tidbits The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258 April 21, 2009 Artist Janet McGregor Dunn Participating in Senoia's Art Of Green On April 25
Will Be Interviewed on 92.5 FM (The Bear) Radio on April 23 Carla Cook Smith has just released today (April 21) the info that another prominent Fayette County artist will be participating in Senoia's Art Of Green, namely Janet McGregor Dunn.. Two days before the art festival she will be interviewed on Senoia's radio station 92.5 FM The Bear. Here is the news release: "Senoia's "Art of Green" Art Show brings recycled art to Georgia's Earth Day celebration. The event, which will take place Saturday, April 25th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in historic downtown Senoia is sponsored by the Cultural Arts Committee of the Senoia Downtown Development Authority and presented by " Arts and Expressions " magazine. The most recent artist to participate in the show is Potter Janet McGregor Dunn . Janet recycles nature into some of her pottery, adding straw, rocks and leaves or other found items from the woods surrounding her home. Mrs. Dunn's enthusiasm for creating interesting and eclectic pottery is obvious. Dunn discovered her love for working with clay approximately 15 years ago after a lifetime of drawing, painting with oils and acrylics, and multi-media crafting. Janet notes: "Clay allows me to incorporate all of the various mediums I enjoy. I knew when I put my fingers in that first block of clay and began forming it that I had found 'my' perfect media."
The Fayette County potter's work is earthy, bluesy, and each piece seems to be unlike any other she has made. The hues and colors of nature from the blues of water and sky to the browns and greens of leaves, grass and trees can be seen in a large portion of her completed pottery. All of her work incorporates a variety of textures. Janet says she is constantly " on the prowl " for new textures to incorporate into her pieces.
In addition to exhibiting at "The Art of Green Show," some of Janet's work is currently on display at the Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone. Her work can be viewed online at www.Hummingbird-Hollow.com or by appointment ( 404-290-3638 ).
Listen for Janet along with Ann Busey, Chairman of the DDA's Cultural Arts Committe as well as other artists, Thursday evening, April 23rd at 9:15 p.m. on 92.5 The Bear."

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Newnan-based Etreasures Publishes Its 50th Book
Coweta Arts Tidbits The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258 April 17, 2009 Newnan-based Etreasures Publishes Its 50th Book
Vickie Kennedy of Newnan today is celebrating the publication of the 50th book by her etreasures Publishing Company. Etreasures is important for the Coweta scene not only as a publisher based in Coweta but also for the books by Cowetans it has published. Kennedy herself has had four of her books published by etreasures. Her fellow Newnanite Christina Barber had her award winning Greystone published there, and Ann Westmoreland had three children's books published by etreasures while she was living in Newnan. Tony Boyd Priest from Sharpsburg had his Call Sign: Iceman published there. At first Kennedy only published books by Georgia authors, but soon began doing so for authors all over the country, and even in a few foreign countries.. Info is available on its website www.etreasurespublishing.com. Here are Kennedy's own words about what this means to her: eTreasures publishes it's 50th book! Here at eTreasures, we take pride in the quality of books we accept. Out of the hundreds we've received since we started in September, 2006, we selected only the best stories for our line of books. Books take time to publish. There are many steps each book has to go through. First, it goes to Acquisitions. They determine if the book meets our minimal standards. If it's accepted, it goes to an editor who reads the story and checks for typing errors, Then, if no re-writes are needed, it goes to another editor for grammar and punctuation, and lastly, to a copyeditor for word by word structure and clarification. While these steps are going on, we create the cover art and send to the author for approval. Once the book is edited, it's then formatted for publishing, the cover is added, and then it's converted to e-book. It's then sent to the author for approval. The author gets a chance to read over it, make any changes, and once those final changes are made, it's released to the public through our site, and over 50 e-book re-sellers worldwide. After the e-book is released, the book requested for print is then created. Again, going through the many steps needed, with different specifications, and a long list of re-sellers of print books. By then, we've polished and fine tuned the book to be as professional and perfect as it can get. Today, April 17, 2009 we have published our 50th e-book! We still have more lined up for the year, but 50 books in two and a half years is remarkable. |

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Jane Whitehurst and Claudia Wood Exhibiting "Recycled" Art and Senoia's "Art Of Green"
Coweta Arts Tidbits The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258 April 14, 2009 Whitehurst and Wood Exhibiting "Recycled" Art at Senoia's "Art of Green" Almost everyone by now has heard of Senoia's "Art of Green" Exhibition. Now Carla C. Smith has announced the identities of two of the participating artists: Jane Whitehurst and Claudia Wood. Here is her announcements first about Whitehurst, second about Wood: Abstract Artist Jane Whitehurst Exhibits Recycled Work in Senoia Artist Jane Whitehurst likens the inner dialog in abstract painting to movie scores. She says, "You can hear a movie soundtrack and know the movie genre. . .suspense, comedy, love story, etc. An abstract expressionist painter expresses emotions through color, line and texture. This can be felt visually just as emotions can be felt through sound." Through her studios in Los Angeles and Senoia, Jane has created a large body of work. Locally, Jane's original work is exhibited at the Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone and most recently at the House of Colors on Miami Circle in Atlanta. Giclees of the artist's work are available at Beyond the Door in Senoia. The House of Colors exhibit, "New Works, New State of Mine" continues through Friday, June 19th with a closing reception from 6 – 9 p.m. An active member of her local community, Jane serves on the Arts Council for Senoia and will be a participating artist in the upcoming "Art of Green" art show to be held in celebration of Earth Day on April 25th in historic downtown Senoia. Ms. Whitehurst, along with other artists will be exhibiting works made of recycled materials. Jane routinely uses recycled materials within her work. The "Art of Green" sidewalk art show will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A New Look at "Trash to Treasure" By Claudia B. Wood If you think of trash as nothing more than the stuff you take to the curb once a week, some local artists hope to change your mind and help you see it in a different light. For those participating in "The Art of Green" sidewalk art show and sale in Historic Senoia on April 25th, the things that most people throw away hold infinite possibilities. My medium is textiles, and "recycled art" is one of my greatest interests. I gravitated toward recycling as a child, when I began to wonder where all the garbage went "when the men took it away." My mother, Clara Boykin, was a charter member of the Alabama Conservancy, and my children and I went door-to-door in our Birmingham community to help establish a curbside recycling program in the 1980s. I have sewn and made clothes, curtains and everything else I could think of since I was ten years old. My mother, an artist raised in the Depression, taught me to conserve fabric and to save all sorts of odds and ends to use in making art. I began to design and make quilts for a national magazine in the early 90s, but it wasn't until 2002 that I really began to concentrate on combining quilts and recycling. As you probably know, patchwork quilts were originally made from a family's worn-out clothing. Although beautiful new fabric is easy to find now, many quiltmakers are going back to the old ways. With our new awareness of the importance of recycling, it seems perfectly appropriate. I find wonderful material for my quilts in my own closet or in local thrift stores. And other friends who sew often give me their "throwaway" scraps. The additional twist I like to put on my work is to create and embellish with bits of what many would call trash and throw away. Of course, fibers are first on the list. When I wash fabric before sewing it, I save the threads that ravel at the cut edges. These go into quilts, bags, jewelry, fiber vessels and crosses. Assorted bits of plastic and used wrapping paper join the raveled thread. So do sticks from the yard, slices of wine corks, egg cartons and other packaging, found wires and bottle caps, plastic vegetable netting, metal washers, old silk flowers and just about anything I can manage to sew to a surface. With so many possibilities, I have to be careful not to keep everything! The process of saving these "gems" from the trash and finding new ways to use them in my artwork is one of the most enjoyable things I do. I hope you'll come and see the results of artistic recycling by my fellow artists and me in the "Art of Green" show. It's a great way to celebrate Earth Day and maybe get some fun ideas for creating your own "green art". |

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Article on Martin Pate and Jerry Yates in Lifestyles Magazine
Coweta Arts Tidbits The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258 April 11, 2009 Articles on Martin Pate and Jerry Yates in Lifestyles Magazine
Last year was a great year for Coweta arts all year long and it began with a bang and ended with a bang. During the first two months of 2008 two different Coweta artists won best in show in a national art contest. One of these was Martin Pate of Newnan, whose painting Lonely Road won first place at the 6th Biennial National Art Exhibition (NAE) held at the Visual Arts Center in Punta Gorda, Florida. His art work remained on display there until March 14. The year ended with a bang on December 15 when Jerry Yates of Newnan won the "Gospel Artist of the Year Award" which was presented to him at the World United Music Festival in Texas by the Roots Music Association. There are articles on both of these men in the April 2009 issue of Lifestyles magazine. The article on Pate, written by Julie Washburn Souza, appears on pages 42 -44. Included are five of Pate's paintings and his comments on them and a brief bio. Now is a good time to see Pate's paintings which are hanging in a special exhibit at the Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone. Pate also has paintings exhibited year round both at the Dogwood and at the Flint Gallery at Panoply in Newnan. The article on Jerry Yates appears on page 80. It is written by Krista Franks and is accompanied by an excellent photograph of Yates playing his guitar taken by the Publisher Monica Gaddy. In the article Yates briefly talks of his music and answers some very personal questions. He plays mainly in restaurants, coffee houses, and communtiy festivals, such as last year's Grantville Day. Info on MartinPate is available on his website www.pateart.com. Info on Jerry Yates is available on his website www.jerryyatesministries..com. Lifestyles magazine is available free from the Newnan Library and other locations in Coweta and throughout the Southside. |

First on the tour, directly across from the museum, is the Gibson-Starr-Sides home at 29 Temple Avenue. Neo-classical features of this charming home include Ionic columns which form a Greek-style portico, a symmetrical facade, and a Palladian-style attic window. Elements of the Victorian style are evidenced in the home's window configuration, interior columns, tiled mantel, and asymmetrical interior layout. The blending of these distinctive styles, know as Neo-classical Revival, was popularized at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Of special note is the extensive Dickens village collection on permanent display in the library.. INFO ON HOME #2: ARNALL-MANN HOME AT 75 JACKSON ST. A short stroll to Jackson and Clark Streets will take you to the Arnall-Mann home, now headquarters to Welden Financial Services. This Neo-classical brick structure features a columned, semi-circular portico surmounted by a galleried balcony, which is accessed by French doors. This elegant home, designed by Atlanta architect R. Kennon Perry, was built by Alton Wynn Arnall about 1924. Its interior features ornate millwork by R. D. Cole and a gracefully curved staircase. The elevated site was chosen to command an excellent view of the approach to the City of Newnan. INFO ON HOME #3: FARMER-DAVIS HOME AT 70 JACKSON ST. Just across Clark Street, at 70 Jackson, is the home of Glenda Davis. Built in 1885 in the Southern Vernacular style by Millard Farmer, Sr., this historic home retains many of its original features, including the striking front door with oval beveled glass, the unusual fireplace covers, mantels, and pocket doors. Among the many antiques are some pieces handcrafted of heart pine from Ms Davis' grandfather's barbershop in North Carolina. Other pieces of special interest are the custom-built kitchen island and deacon's bench Ms. Davis had made from old pieces of heart pine found stored under the house. INFO ON HOME #4: CANTWELL HOME AT 70 JACKSON ST. Last on the walking tour is the Federal- style Cantwell home at 55 Jackson Street. Built in 2002 as an infill house, its traditional design makes a pleasantly congruent addition to this historic neighborhood. The imposing facade features a double front door flanked by four two-story Ionic columns and surmounted by a central balcony. Open, airy rooms, tastefully furnished, and an extended rear deck make this stylish and comfortable town home a must-see. INFO ON HOME #5: JONES-PAULK HOME AT 701 W. HWY. 16 You'll want to retrieve your car for the final home on the tour. Just a few miles from town is the charming country home at 701 W. Highway 16 owned by Susan and John Paulk.
