Coweta Arts Tidbits The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258 Christian Writers United To Meet On July 7 The members of Christian Writers United will hold their next meeting on July 7. Linda Jennings has released the following information: Christian Writers to Meet
Christian Writers United (CWU) will have their next meeting on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Coweta Community Church located on the 34 by-pass. The meeting will run from 7 – 9 p.m.
All Christian writers are invited regardless of genre choice. According to co-founder Swanee Ballman, "We recently had an author attend CWU who has written two Christian westerns. This is a genre which is not often seen in the Christian community. Everyone is excited about it."
"Additionally," states co-founder Linda Jennings, "our members and attendees don't just write books and scripts, they also write magazine articles. Several have begun entering writing contests, and they are having a ball doing it."
Connie Singleton recently placed second in the Newnan-Coweta Magazine's 2009 writer's competition. Her article, "Magic" was published on the magazine's website.
Edwina Cowgill has made the first cut in the "Winning Writers Tom Howard Short Story Contest." She has also been published in several magazines using different genres.
"The main goal of CWU is to encourage those who already write and those who desire to write – to write," states Jennings. "Considering everybody's hectic daily schedules, writers need continual encouragement to write. We also need help in the areas of publishing and marketing and CWU members can provide assistance in both areas."
Presently, CWU members are working on a book of short stories written by CWU members. It will be published in the late fall. |

Coweta Arts Tidbits The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258 schultz_forrest@yahoo.com June 10, 2009 Buddy Simmons Skypilot and Fugitive's Revenge Books Now In Print
Several months ago the word went out that Newnan author George "Buddy" Simmons, after a series of wild setbacks, had finally gotten his two Western novels published -- as electronic books (on the http://www.tercoe.com/author-buddy-simmons.html website).
Now Simmons has proudly announced that the two books have been printed. And he is very pleased with the quality of the books and the speed with which they were produced by the publisher, Jawbone Publishing Company, which is located in Newnan. Information on these books is available at his brand new website, specially created for them: http://www.unclebuddysez.com/Skypilot.html and http://www.unclebuddysez.com/Revenge.html..
Simmons is now in the final stages of completing his third novel, a boy-and-his-dog story entitled Tramp. This too will be published by Jawbone later this year. Simmons has had many Western short stories published in the Louis L'Amour Magazine and was intending to have his novels published by that publisher when he discovered to his horror that the company had folded when the Editor died! Then HE almost died from a series of heart attacks. Now it appears that the rough ride is over for a while and things are going more smoothly! In the past Simmons was on the radio as "Uncle Buddy", where he spun many a yarn. Now there is an opportunity to read some of these yarns in his books. Simmons is a member of the Coweta Writers Group from whose members he has asked for advice and with whose members he has shared his triumphs. |

Coweta Arts Tidbits The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258 schultz_forrest@yahoo.com June 3, 2009 Roy Schneider Performing at The Alamo on Saturday, June 6 · Roy Schneider, a great singer singer/musician/songwriter (as well as cartoonist) will be performing at The Alamo on Saturday June 6 at the usual time of 9:30 PM, and, as usual, the show is free. Lack of space forbids listing even a small fraction of all Schneider's accomplishments, so we will settle here with noting the most recent of these along with noting a compliment from a veteran musician. Schneider's most recent accomplishment was being named a New Folk Competition Finalist at the 2009 Kerrville Folk Festival. And from a voice from days of yore, Paul Stookey of the legendary Peter, Paul, and Mary supergroup has remarked with astonishment that Schneider has "played so many instruments so well". Info on Schneider can be found on his website www.royschneider.com. The Alamo is easily spotted in downtown Newnan on the Courthouse Square by its Marquee, which is an indication that it once housed a motion picture theatre. It is one of Newnan's historic buildings. It is now known for its great pizza and its great Saturday night live entertainment. The phone no.. is 770-683-2526 and the website is www.thealamonewnan.com |

Author/Illustrator Joyce Revoir Issues "Busy Bee" Film
Author/Illustrator Joyce Revoir of Newnan has been busy recently creating a new children's movie, The Busy Bee and The Silly Sunflowers, which was released today on DVD as the latest production in her Little Garden Stories series of books and films. Her website www.LittleGardenStories.com describes the story of the film in these words: When the garden's busiest worker find her flowers are gone, The Busy Bee learns a wonderful lesson on sharing and friendship. The DVD includes new songs by Christy Jantzen and some "Craft-Time fun".
Revoir was inspired to create the Little Garden Stories from sharing in her children's backyard adventures. Shortly after moving to Newnan her daughter Gillian saw fireflies for the first time. It was her delightful reaction to the fireflies that served as the inspiration for the first of the Little Garden Stories. Revoir has been highly praised for the creative quality of her stories, and her achievement was publically and nationally recognized when she received the 2007 Telly Award for her story "The Little Firefly". Below are photos of Revoir, Jantzen, The Telly Award, the cover of the Busy Bee DVD, and a close-up of the Busy Bee alighting on a flower.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Musical Theatre Backgrounds of Coweta Students (Kelsi Adams and Abby Mortenson) in Backyard Kids Theatre's Production of Cinderella
Coweta Arts Tidbits The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258 schultz_forrest@yahoo.com June 1, 2009 Two Coweta Students in Backyard Kids Theatre Production of Cinderella Kelsi Adams and Abby Mortensen Experienced in Musical Theatre By now everyone who is au courant with the Southside performing arts scene knows about the Fayette-based Backyard Kids Theatre, their upcoming production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella on June 13 & 14 in Fayetteville, and that there will be two Coweta County students involved, Kelsi Adams and Abby Mortenson. (Anyone who has missed this or wants more details than in the accounts you have read, can consult this website http://backyardkidstheatre.org.) Both Kelsi and Abby were asked to be involved because of their impressive performing arts backgrounds, which is easily shown by their involvement in two of the most important works of musical theatre which were produced on the Southside last year. Kelsi Adams played the role of the Southern Belle Temperance Weatherby in The Twilight Theatre's performance of Frank Wildhorn's The Civil War last year at The Wadsworth. She also was on the cast of the recent performance of Oklahoma at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County. The photograph below shows Kelsi, who is the Hair and Make Up Co-ordinator, assisting the lead actress, Paige McCauley, who is playing the role of Cinderella. At the age of 17, Kelsi is also serving as a role model for the other students, who are younger than she is. Abby Mortenson was a member of the VOICES Youth Ensemble which performed in the prestigious Christmas Mist Concert in December last year at The Wadsworth under the leadership of Artistic Director Maria Pia Ugarte, who is one of the leading instructors in vocal arts on the Southside. Abby Mortenson is one of Ugarte's students at her studio in Fayetteville, which is a great honor, especially for someone as young as Abby, who is only in fifth grade! The photograph below shows Abby in her role as cloth merchant during the beginning of the show. Later in the show she plays the role of a palace maiden dancing several numbers in the ball. She will also be featured in several vocal solos. Kelsi Adams...has grown up being very involved in musical theatre. Recently, she was seen in Oklahoma at the Coweta Performing Arts Center and in Civil War with Twilight Theatre. Because of her mulitude of talents, Kelsi was asked to help...with the production of Cinderella. ...She volunteered to assist as the Hair and Make-up Coordinator. As such, Kelsi will serve as an adviser for the cast on proper hair and make-up techniques. Additionally, she will be responsible for ensuring Cinderella and the other cast members stay looking their best for the production. Here you will see Kelsi assisting lead actress Paige McCauley as Cinderella. "Kelsi is a great role model for the kids involved in the show, and we are thrilled to have her serve in this advisory and an important support role for Backyard Kids Theatre." Lisa McCauley, General Manager. Abby Mortensen...... Abby is in the ensemble where she plays two important roles. She is a cloth merchant villager in the opening numbers. Then, later in the show, she is a palace maiden at the ball, where she dances in a couple ballroom numbers. Abby has been a welcome addition to our cast and adds impressive vocal skills. Thanks, Lisa Abby and Camille are my students. You saw them all during the December show Abby and Camille were part of the youth ensemble. They are both part of my private studio in Fayetteville. |
