[Coweta Arts Tidbits] African Childrens Choir at Arts Centre on October 9
African Children's Choir At Arts Centre on October 9
The Centre for Performing a Visual Arts of Coweta County has attracted performing artists from all over the nation and even from other countries. On October 9 at 7 PM the Centre is presenting the noted Daraja Children's Choir of Africa in a special choral concert. Admission is free, and donations will be accepted to benefit the African Children's Orphanage.
The music to be performed by this choir is described in this way on the Centre's website: The music begins and the drums beat as the room fills with the sound of the Daraja Children's Choir of Africa. Dressed in their vibrant costumes with radiant smiles on their faces, the children express the joy and hope they have found in Christ through African song and dance. Daraja means "bridge" in Swahili, and these 24 orphaned and vulnerable children have journeyed across the bridge all the way from Kenya to bring you a taste of African worship and praise. The Choir wishes to inspire you with the hope and love they have found in Jesus Christ, in spite of the severe hardships they have faced. Their performances are a blend of traditional African song and dance and contemporary Christian music, which shares that hope in a unique and powerful way. Information about the Daraji Choir can be found on their website http://www.410bridge.org/daraja/. The Arts Centre is located on Lower Fayetteville Road several miles east of Newnan. Swanee Ballman Publishes Exodus From America
Swanee Ballman keeps very busy with her Newnan-based Jawbone Publishing Company but she still manages to squeeze out enough time to continue writing her own books. Since moving to Coweta from Florida, she has written two novels -- Day Zero last year and now, hot off the press, Exodus From America. Here is what she has to say about her latest one: "What happens when a group of conservatives devises an alternative to life under an extreme, progressive President? What happens to them? What happens to the United States?"
Information on her Jawbone Publishing Company is available on its website www.jawbonepublishing.com and information on her own books is available at www.jawbonepublishing.com/ballman.htm
Swanee Ballman is a member of the Coweta Writers Group and is a co-founder of Christian Writers United, which is based in Newnan. She has also contributed to the Coweta literary scene by publishing (through Jawbone) books by several other Coweta writers and by being one of the speakers at last year's Newnan-based Southern Writers Conference.
Ballman is also contributing through her own writing to the burgeoning Coweta literary arts scene whose writers for the past three years have been having books published at the rate of one per month. This rate is continuing into 2009: Exodus From America is the seventh book published by Coweta writers so far this year.

American Tribal Style Belly Dancer Hollie Schmidt At Grantville Day
Hollie Schmidt, who used to live in Grantville and now lives in Newnan, is upset about the erotic connotations which the term "belly dance" has for the American public, due mainly to the influence of Hollywood. She claims that the term actually refers to a form of folk dancing and therefore should not be regarded as porn. Schmidt's own "Gypsy Theatre" belly dance troupe is mentored by the American Tribal Style Belly Dance discussed in the article on the subject found at the website www.fcbd.com. Info on Schmidt herself, including the belly dance classes she teaches at the Newnan Theatre, is found at http://people.tribe.net/3f763aa4-3ad4-4fe6-8b86-e058a3a3bd09.
