Trisha Adams To Be Honored By Artist Reception at Images in Moreland

Images Gallery on Main Street in Moreland has announced that it will be honoring a woman who has not only created great art but also been very active in the Newnan-Coweta Art Association where she started a newsletter, created their website, and
established the special arrangement with Espresso Lane for the monthly themed NCAA exhibits.  Here is the Images announcement:

ARTIST RECEPTION AT IMAGES GALLERY
> MORELAND, GA, May 04, 2007: Images Gallery will hold an Artist Reception
for award winning Watercolor Artist, Trisha Adams on Saturday, May 4th from 4:00 to 6:00PM. Join us in our celebration of Trisha's accomplishments and to sign up for up-coming floorcloth classes and watercolor classes at IMAGES Studio.

Trisha Adams' paintings style is unique.  She uses bold colors and controlled strokes, but tries to maintain a level of fun and whimsy in everything she creates.   Trisha enjoys painting BIG and quick!  She often works on several pieces at once, to avoid having to wait for the paint to dry.  Watercolors are her primary art medium, but she also enjoys painting murals and canvas floorcloths.  Recently, Adams has also begun "dabbling" in acrylics on canvas.

Adams has attended classes and workshops in the Pacific Northwest, Georgia and Hawaii .  Trisha's artwork can be found in local displays and in private collections across the United States .  She is an officer and member of the Newnan Coweta Art Association, Inc. (NCAA) and a member of SCAVA (Southern Crescent Alliance of Visual Artists).

Trisha was born and raised in Oregon , the youngest of three siblings.  She and her husband Brian moved to Georgia in 2001 and proudly call Newnan home.  Brian and Trisha are the proud parents of three beautiful and active little girls ages, 7, 4 and 2.  As a busy wife and stay at home mother, her artwork often comes second, third…even fourth, but any stolen moments are spent feeding her creative obsessions.

Movie By Cowetan Using Local Actors Soon To Air on Television

Joe Dwyer's Shubian's Rift Compared With Star Trek
Delta Air Lines Pilot Joe Dwyer not only enjoys flying around the Earth, he has also long liked to imagine piloting a starship through outer space. The result was the production last year of a science fiction film Shubian's Rift, which is being compared to Star Trek by some, such as the Hollyword North Reporter. Surprisingly little has been said about this around here until lately in spite of the fact that the film premiered in the prestigious Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County and the cast was selected from professional level actors recruited mainly from past and present members of the Newnan Theatre Company including former leaders Dayle Lyles, who currently heads the Lacuna Group, and Caroline Carr, who currently is the Artistic Director of the Renaissance Festival. There was an article in Newnan's paper The Times Herald announcing the premiere. In the current issue of the 85 South -- Out and About publication there is an article about the film along with a photograph of the flyer showing Dwyer's wife Mo holding a space age gun. Watch for announcements when the times for the TV series has been established. Information about the movie is available on the informative website http://www.shubiansrift.com/. AND, chalk up yet one more triumph for the ever burgeoning Coweta arts scene !!!

Novel by Coweta Author Joe Harless To Be Made Into Movie
Film Rights to Black Warrior's Curse obtained by Terry Chenowith
Joe Harless of Newnan has long been known around here for his job training company and for the educational theory underlying the Cenral Educational Center (CEC) in Newnan. Two years ago during a speech he gave to the Coweta Writers Group Harless also revealed his interest in fictional writing when he announced that he had written a novel entitled Black Warrior's Curse. Later that month his novel was published by Publish America and articles were written about it by Winston Skinner in The Times Herald.
Last month the famous Hollywood magazine Variety carried an article indicating that Black Warrior's Curse will be made into a motion picture. The film rights to the book have been obtained by Terry Chase Chenowith's company Back fence Productions. Here is what Variety says about this:
    Chenowith Fights Black Warrior's Curse
    Source: Variety
    March 15, 2007

Writer-producer Terry Chase Chenowith and his production banner Back Fence Productions have snagged film rights to Joe H. Harless novel Black Warrior's Curse.

The book is a fictionalized account of violence amid the work of the civil rights movement in the Deep South in the 1950s and '60s as viewed from the prospective of a young white man and an African-American of the same age, both from Alabama. Both are changed by the riots and church bombings in Birmingham, "Bloody Sunday" in Selma and Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial.

Chenowith will write the script. Most recently, he wrote and produced WWII romancer "Beautiful Dreamer," starring Brooke Langton and Colin Egglesfield.

Arts Centre String Concert To Be Held at Wadsworth Auditorium
One of the various remarks made by Charles Wadsworth during his annual concert last year in the Auditorium named in his honor concerned his suggestion of co-operation between the Auditorium and the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County. It looks like this suggestion has become reality because the next performance of the String Concert of the Arts Centre will be held, not at the Centre, but at the Wadsworth Auditorium. Below is provided the information for this concert found on the website of the Arts Centre, www.thecentreonline.net. In this announcement the Wadsworth Auditorium is called "Wadsworth Hall". Whether this is now the new name of this building or whether this is another suggestion is unclear.

Coweta Photographers Have Been Honored by Slow Exposures

One of the most prestigious photographic art shows in the nation is the Slow Exposures Photographical Exhibition of the Rural South held in Pike County and strongly supported by its people. Coweta County photographers have submitted entries to this exhibition and have been highly honored for their efforts. Last year five Cowetans had their entries accepted and two of these won prizes: the Grand Prize was won by Gary Gruby of Senoia and Deborah Smith of Grantville received an Honorable Mention for hers. Last year Paul Conlan of Newnan was both a winner and was also honored by being named to the organization which plans and runs the show. And he recently was further honored by being given the position of redesigning their website, http://www.slowexposures.org/, where information can be obtained about this year's contest as well as those held in the past. Here is what the site says abot Slow Exposures 2007

SlowExposures 2007 General Information A Juried Exhibition Celebrating Photography of the Rural South

    September 21 through September 30
    Pike County, Georgia

"SlowExposures," the nationally recognized photography exhibition that underscores the diversity, contradictions and complexity of the rural South, opens Friday, September 21, 2007 for two weekends in the picturesque town of Concord, Georgia. The fifth anniversary of the free photography showcase will be held in the historic 1887 R.F. Strickland Center, a late nineteenth century mercantile store listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Pike County, south of Atlanta.

Read the History of the SlowExposures Show (Adobe .pdf File)

The SlowExposures opening on Friday, September, 21, is followed by a benefit gala dinner/dance/auction on Saturday, September 22. The six-day exhibit continues on September 23, 28, 29 and 30, with a BBQ picnic on Saturday, September 29 hosted by the Pike County Arts Council.
Located one hour south of the Atlanta metropolitan airport, SlowExposures attracts over one thousand visitors each year who mark the last two weeks of September on their calendars to come to Pike County and be the first to view and purchase original and innovative works from more than forty photographers from all over the United States.

"Annually, scores of photographers submit their art for jury selection," says Christine Curry, Chair of the annual free event. "Over three hundred images are usually submitted: most from the southeast," reports Curry. "For the 2006 SlowExposures show, photographers from nine states representing thirty-four cities and towns presented their works for jury selection, with a sizable contingent from Pike County."
"SlowExposures" is the annual fundraiser of Pike Historic Preservation and is dedicated to supporting the history and cultural heritage of the rural south through contemporary photography. All proceeds from the show and the dinner/dance/auction go to the preservation of Pike County's historic buildings and landscapes. The Whiskey Bonding Barn in Molena is this year's beneficiary.

Newnan Photographer Paul Conlan Addresses Students at Arts Centre
The Coweta County Schools and the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County are to be commended for arranging for local high school students to hear an address by one of the County's most distinguished photographic artists, Paul Conlan of Newnan. Conlan has been repeatedly recognized for his accomplishments. Last year he was named the Photographer of the Year by the Roswell Photographic Society. In 2005 he won the top prize at the prestigious Slow Exposures Photographic Exhibition of the Rural South held in Pike County. Conlan has also been honored by Slow Exposures by being given a place on the organizing committee and being placed in charge of the design of their new website http://www.slowexposures.org/.

High School Student Photography Presentation and Exhibit
Last Tuesday evening, Paul Conlan of Newnan provided a presentation for Coweta County high school students interested in photography and the arts.

The event, held at The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts, was attended by more than 50 students plus teachers. After a dinner provided by the Arts Centre, Don Nixon, Director of the Arts Centre, introduced Paul who discussed the practice of street photography which he defined as capturing unposed images of life around us.

He reviewed some the historical roots of street photography and the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 - 2004), the French photographer who was one of the first to adopt the then new and relatively light weight 35 mm camera to more easily record the "decisive moments" of life.
Paul explained his own practice of street photography and the vision, skills, techniques and equipment best suited to this type of photography. His presentation included two virtual photo excursions one in Atlanta and the second in the Newnan Coweta County area. Each featured many of Paul's photographs.

He also announced a photography show and competition for Coweta County high school students which he will judge.

Students must submit their photos and entry forms by May 14th.

Selected photographs will be included in an exhibit at the Arts Centre in August and cash awards will be presented. The student show will be held in conjunction with an exhibit of Paul's photographs. Student entry forms and submission details are available from the art and photography teachers at each high school.

To view some of Paul's photographs, you may visit his website at www.FStopBlues.com.

    Planning For Grantville Day Begins
First Meeting of Planning Committee May 3 -- Volunteers Welcomed
A lot of changes have taken place in regard to Grantville Day this year -- it will be run by the Grantville Veterans Association (GVA), it will be held in the fall instead of the summer, September 15 & 16 to be exact, the Chairman is Sandra Luttrell, and the new name is The New Grantville Days Festival. And they are excited and ready to roll to make this the best Grantville Day ever -- one of these new things to be included this year will be announced soon.
But for now the important announcement is of the first meeting of the Committee which will run Grantville Day -- it will be held on Thursday evening May 3 at the Veterans new home on Main Street beginning at 6:30 PM. Both Luttrell and the GVA are stressing that anyone concerned about Grantville Day can be a volunteer in helping to plan and run this festival. It is NOT necessary to be a Veteran or be a member of GVA.
Anyone wishing additional information can contact Luttrell at sangalasands@aol.com or by phone at 770-583-9013 or by seeing her at her place of business Ole Town Dolls and Collectibles at 11 B Church Street.

Lacuna Group "Backer's Audition" of Blake Play at Wadsworth on May 3
Dale Lyles has recently released the following information about the Newnan-based Lacuna Group's William Blake project and the "Backer's Audition" to be held on May 3 at the Wadsworth Auditorium:

    William Blake's Inn

A Visit to William Blake's Inn is a song cycle by Lacuna member Dale Lyles. It is based on a book of children's poetry by Nancy Willard, which won the Newbery Award in 1982, becoming the first book of poetry to be awarded the most presitigious prize in children's literature.
In January of 2003, members of Lacuna were privileged to take seventeen students to Ayrshire, Scotland, to sing with the Scottish Opera's international cast of The Tale o' Tam, a setting of Robert Burns's "Tam O'Shanter." They decided then that they would work towards a similar project in Newnan.
In September of that year, Nancy Willard gave her permission for Dale Lyles to set her book to music. He finished composition in September of 2006 (having taken time off in the meantime for other projects.)
Now Lacuna is the artistic arm of the project to produce A Visit to William Blake's Inn as an international production. Our goal is a performance in 2008.

    Happening now: get involved!

If you're a singer, a dancer, or just someone who is interested in learning more about creating a new theatre piece from scratch, come work with us on A Visit to William Blake's Inn! No previous experience is necessary. We'll be playing with all kinds of ideas, where anything goes!
Dale Lyles and Marc Honea are leading a workshop of three of the pieces from William Blake's Inn: "The Sun & Moon Circus Soothes the Wakeful Guests," "The Man in the Marmalade Hat Arrives," and "Two Sunflowers Move Into the Yellow Room."
The purpose of the workshop is to provide a barebones visualization of these three pieces for a "backers audition" in May. After the First Look performance in January, we talked about the problem we've had in convincing people that a song cycle, with no plot or script, is actually stage-able. By staging these three pieces within the total work, we'll more easily convince our backers of what is possible with the music.
The workshop sessions are Tuesday nights, 7:30-9:00 pm, at the Newnan School of Dance, 35 Amlajack Blvd (across from the West Georgia University center/water tower).

I can't come on Tuesday nights!

This is not a problem. You can also contribute to the workshops in several ways.
First of all, keep checking the group blog for weekly updates. You can always add a comment to any post, whether it's a new idea or image or anything.
Also, check out the Vyew page that we've set up to work with. The room ID number is 067760.
Further, you can actually help build things we need by checking out the What We Need page.
And of course, you'll want to get your own copies of the scores and the music. See the next story for links to those.

    The work itself

There are fifteen songs in A Visit to William Blake's Inn, plus an epilogue.
The vocal/piano scores are available at Dale Lyles's website at this page. There are also mp3s of each song.

    Still to come

We will have our "backers audition" on May 3, 7:00 pm, at the Wadsworth Auditorium in downtown Newnan. This is another complete performance of the work, with the three pieces mentioned above in some kind of staging
After that, we will work with the producing agents of the project to set a date for a production in 2008. Our goal is a completely staged production, orchestra, chorus, and all, in 2008. We plan to invite 25 students from Scotland to take part in the world premiere. We also plan to invite Nancy Willard to help us celebrate her magical work.

Song & Dance is an unconventional musical whose first act is told in song and whose second act is told in dance.  The first act tells the story of Emma, a young English girl who comes to New York full of ambitions to be a hat designer and who learns about America-and about herself-in encounters with four American men.  Her story is told entirely in songs, and even more daring, Emma is the only character seen on stage.  The others exist only in the actress' ability to make us see them.  Of the four men, it is Joe, a young man from Nebraska, with whom Emma really falls in love, but, new to New York and not ready to make a "commitment," Joe abruptly ends the relationship.

    Mecca Entrance

Act II is the story of Joe's subsequent life in New York-a journey that leads him to his own kind of maturity, to a realization of what he has lost in giving up Emma and to a determination to win her back.  In contrast to Act 1, Joe's story includes songs without dialogue-no words at all.  Act II is told entirely, and eloquently in dance.  This time, however, there are supporting characters, played by six superb dancers.

    Legacy

In a way then, Song & Dance tells a quintessential urban story:  how one loses one's innocence in a city like New York and how, having lost that innocence, one sometimes has to struggle to get back to human contact, real feelings and a sense of one's self.  It isn't a conventional plot; it's an emotional travelogue-one that brings tears of recognition from the audience.  People who clearly are not English girls from London or boys from Nebraska can be heard to say, "That's my story up there!

[Grantville Day News Release] Grantville Day Has New Sponsor, Name, & Date

Grantville Day Has New Sponsor, New Date, and New Name

The Grantville Better Home Town (GBHT) organization, which ran the annual Grantville Day community festival from 2002 through 2006, has decided it will no longer do so.  Shortly after this decision, the Grantville Veterans Association (GVA) decided they would run Grantville Day.  Sandra Luttrell, the Grantville Day Chairman with GBHT, will continue to be the Chairman with GVA.  Angela Carey, who was the Grantville Day Chairman during most of the time when it was run by GBHT and who resigned after last year's Grantville Day, has come back on board as Co-Chairman.  Another item of continuity will be that the writer of the Grantville Day news releases, Forrest Schultz, will continue to do so under the GVA auspices.  GVA has strongly stressed that it is NOT necessary to be a Veteran or a member of GVA to be involved in planning and running Grantville Day.

Another change in Grantville Day this year will be the date.  Ever since its founding in the 1990s Granville Day has always been held on the second Saturday in June.  One disadvantage with this date is the heat -- many people have complained that it is just too hot to be out of doors on that day.  Luttrell, the new Grantville Day Chairman, strongly agrees, and it was she who engineered the change to a cooler time of year.  The date chosen is Saturday September 15 and Sunday September 16.

Finally, the very name of Grantville Day has been changed to "The New Grantville Days Festival".  Since many people do not know that Grantville Day is a festival, it was felt that the term "festival" should be included in the name.

The first meeting of the Committee which will plan and run the New Grantville Days Festival  will be announced soon.
