Contemporary Artists Alliance Shuts Down

The Coweta arts scene has been burgeoning for some time now and is replete with many triumphs by Coweta artists and arts and cultural organizations.  So much is going on now that it is hard to keep up with it all.  But, the scene is not all rosy because occasionally there are some setbacks.  The most recent of these is the demise of the Contemporary Artists Alliance (CAA).

For several years the CAA sponsored art shows at various venues, mostly in Carrollton.  It even ran its own gallery for a short time.  Not only did these shows provide opportunities for Coweta artists and those of other southside counties to exhibit their works, it encouraged the production of art for gallery display.  After a hiatus of inactivity, the next show planned was to be for works of photographic art.  This had to be delayed when several months ago CAA co-leader Ann Fay Rushforth moved out of Newnan and up to Smyrna.    This left only the other CAA co-leader, Deborah Landry, who was planning to resume CAA functions soon.  But then Landry recently announced that she is shutting down CAA because she will soon by moving out of state, and there is no one to carry it on.

Fortunately, though, due to the time lag involved, there are still more art works of theirs to be seen around here:  there will soon be two opportunities to see Rushforth's art work and three opportunities to see Landry's.  Rushforth will be among the artists displaying paintings at the Georgia Mosaic art exhibit at the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center from March 2 through April 13.  And her reredos mural for the St. Paul Episcopal Church in Roscoe will soon be finished.  There will soon be announcments about two public art works by Landry (in Carrollton and Fairburn) and about her show at t he Mason Murer Gallery in Atlanta.

Ceramic Arts Exhibit at Arts Centre Announced

Dale Sizemore, an art teacher at Newnan High School, is concerned about the insufficient concern for the ceramic arts.  To focus attention on this branch of art, Sizemore organized last year a statewide Georgia Ceramics Arts Exhibit and established a website dealing with the subject, www.gaceramicarts.com.  This year's exhibit will soon open at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County.  Sizemore has released the following information concerning this important event:

The 2006 Georgia High School Ceramic Arts Awards and Symposium

This exhibit and workshop has been organized to provide recognition and stimulation to secondary students who are interested in the ceramic arts. The exhibit will open on Friday, April 14th and will end on Saturday, April 28th. It will be held at The Centre for the Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County at 1523 Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan. All accepted work must remain on display for the full two-week period. Jane Peak, Professor of Art/Ceramics at Georgia Southern University, will jury the student work via digital photos. She will present the awards at a dessert reception on Friday, April 14th, after she gives a short presentation highlighting her student's work and the ceramics facilities at Georgia Southern. Jane's work will also be on display there at the Centre.
On Saturday, April 15th, there are several hand-on workshops for students and teachers from 9am till 2pm. Vernon Smith will be demonstrating his unique throwing techniques throughout the day. Jerry Richardson will help students create some unique "creatures of the mind." Tom Zwierlein and Doug Adams will conduct Raku firings. Our sponsor for Jane and the symposium is Kickwheel Pottery Supply, Inc. located at 1986 Tucker Industrial Road, Tucker, Georgia. They deserve many thanks for their generosity. They will have a table set up on Saturday for those interested in ceramic supplies and tools. The Coweta Association of Educators, Certified, affiliated with the Georgia Association of Educators, are providing $300 in cash awards.

The opening night of the show is Friday, April 14 at 7:30pm, which will include a 30 minute presentation on Georgia Southern Universities art program by our juror, Jane Pleak, Professor of Art. She will then present the students a total of $300 in cash awards in the categories of Ceramic Vessels, Ceramic Sculpture, and Portfolios. We will then have a dessert reception for both the student work in the lobby of the Centre, and the art of the juror, Jane Pleak, in the main front gallery of the Centre. The Symposium on Saturday is for High School teachers and students, who need to make reservations at least one week in advance, since food is provided at no charge. The sponsors include Kickwheel Pottery Supply, Inc. from Tucker, Georgia and the Coweta Association of Educators, Certified. Vernon Smith, a gifted ceramic artist, will be demonstrating special wheel throwing techniques, and Jerry Richardson will give the students some hands-on activities in making clay beasts. There will also be Raku firings taking place where students will be able to glaze a pot on the spot, see it get fired, finished, and take it home. See the attachment for the details that were sent out to each of the high schools in Georgia. Let me know if there is anything else I need to clarify.

Dale Sizemore can be contacted by telephone at Newnan High School at      770-254-2880 and at home at 770-251-5957 or by email at dale.sizemore@cowetaschools.net.

Artist Kay Moore Announces Art Classes at Images Studio in Moreland

Artist Kay Moore from Newnan has recently released the following imporant announcement:

I know a lot of you that I've met over the past year have been interested in finding a place to take Stained Glass Classes. Well, I've got exciting news on that front!!

My friend and fellow artist, Deborah Smith , has recently opened Images Gallery in the booming metropolis of Moreland. The Gallery showcases local artists, and is packed to the brim with the finest quality pottery, paintings, stained glass (of course!), photography, hand made soaps and other original creations. Moreland is conveniently located just south of downtown Newnan off Highway 29 with easy access to I-85. Images Gallery, located at 21 Main Street , Moreland, is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Deborah has also secured a building just two doors down from Images Gallery in Moreland, a small portion of which will be used for her photography studio. Deborah is generously providing the remainder of the Images Studio building to be used as classrooms for teaching art classes. There are currently classes forming for stained glass, mosaics, wire art jewelry, children's drawing, children's and adult watercolors, calligraphy and scherenschnitte. For more information on any of these classes, please call Images Gallery at 770-254-1555. You may also contact me (770-254-0349) for more information on the stained glass and mosaic classes.

Deborah has assigned an entire (enormous) classroom that will be dedicated to stained glass. My husband, Craig, and I have been working feverishly to install lighting (five 8-ft fluorescent fixtures hung on a 14 ft ceiling!) and build giant work tables in preparation for the first class on Saturday. I will be putting the finishing touches on the teaching studio over the course of the next few weeks, but I am already very pleased with how it is coming along. It will be a functional glass studio by Saturday!

In case you're interested, I'm attaching a copy of the Stained Glass Course descriptions and current calendar of stained glass classes. I have left Wednesday afternoons/evenings and Thursdays open, so that we can add more classes as the need arises. I am very interested to hear your feedback on what types of classes you would be interested in taking. I plan to offer Mosaic and Lead classes in the near future, and have had some interest in a Repair class. I will also be offering a Parent/Child Mosaic class soon. Please feel free to let me know if you have any other ideas.

If you haven't guessed already, I'm very excited about this new opportunity. Even if you can't take a class right now, do drop in for a visit. I look forward to seeing you at the Studio, or at an upcoming Art Show in the near future!

Warmest regards,

Kay Moore

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] New Drama Group in Sharpsburg Presents Comedy March 15-17

Glo Tinsley Forms Theatre Group In Sharpsburg

First Show:  A Wedding and a Funeral Dinner Comedy On March 15 - 17

It would take a long time to list all of the plays in which Gloria ("Glo") Tinsely has acted in Southside theatres.  Now she has formed her own theatre group, the SBC Drama Group -- sometimes called The Sharpsburg Sharpies -- which is now rehearsing for its first play, a two-act comedy, A Wedding and a Funeral.  This  is an original play, which Tinsley herself co-authored along with Karen Ridenhour.  It will be directed by Amy Bridges.

Tinsley has established this drama group as a Sharpsburg community theatre group, which will be performing in several venues.  The venue for their first play will be a church fellowship hall but the play is a community event performed by a community theatre group, and is not an activity of the church.  However, the play itself is about a church (which -- guess what -- is in a small southern town) which has just got a new Pastor. This venue is the fellowship hall of the Sharpsburg Baptist Church located at 6413 Highway 54 in Sharpsburg.

To those theatregoers who like to go out to dinner before the show, A Wedding and a Funeral is a very convenient play to attend because a dinner will be served at the venue immediately prior to the performance.  (The dinner will consist of pork medallions with peach sauce, scalloped potatoes, green beans, tea or coffee, and dessert.) The combined price for the dinner and theatre is only $20. Dinner will be served at 7 PM.  There will be three performances, March 15, March 16, and March 17. Tickets may be purchased by calling 770-599-6046 or by emailing sbcdramateam@yahoo.com.  (A nursery is available by prior arrangement.)

Further information on this play or on the drama team is available by calling Glo Tinsely at 770-599-8661 (home) or 678-772-8932 (cell).
