[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Jerry Yates Wins "2008 Gospel Artist of Year" Award

    Coweta   Arts   Tidbits

The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases

Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258

    December 23, 2008

The 2008 Coweta Arts Scene Ends (as it began) With a Bang:

Jerry Yates Wins National Music Award !!

Named "2008 Gospel Artist of Year" by Roots Music Ass'n.

The 2008 Coweta arts scene began with two overwhelming triumphs -- Newnan visual artists Martin Pate and Marc Stewart each won "Best In Show" in NATIONAL art contests; and it ended with another -- Newnan Vocal & Instrumental Artist Jerry Yates won a NATIONAL music award from the Roots Music Association presented to him at the World Music Convention in Texas last week. This itself is obviously a tremendous honor for Yates and for Coweta.  But what makes it even more significant is that Yates is NOT a professional musician, nor has he ever had any formal music education or training.  He is a pastor; and he only does his music in his spare time and as a ministry in additional to his pastoral one.

Here is the press release issued by the Roots Music Association:

    Yates Takes Home Big Award

November 19, 2008, Newnan, GA....Newnan, Georgia's Jerry Yates came out a big winner at the 2008 Roots Music Association's Award Ceremony, held on November 15th, in San Marcos, Texas.

The ceremony, was part of the World United Music Festival and Radio Conference, presented by the Roots Music Association and the United States Entertainment Forces. The festival and conference were the premier radio and music industry networking events for professionals involved in the music industry, around the globe.  The event's focus was on the national and international radio, music industry, and related press, within the worldwide music market, providing a platform, primarily for independent musicians and artists, but including established performers, to gain exposure and be heard.

Although bad weather forced the cancellation of the music festival Saturday night and Sunday, the event was not a total wash out.

Rev. Jerry Yates, a solo Gospel artist, who sings, writes songs, and plays acoustic guitar, with a country blues, rockabilly style, performed Friday afternoon, showcasing his talents before a small, but enthusiastic crowd.  However, the big event for Yates came during the award ceremony, which was held in the Embassy Suites Hotel, in San Marcos, when he walked away with the 2008 Roots Music Association's "Gospel Artist of the Year Award"!  Other nominees in the "Gospel Category" included Ricky Scaggs and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

"It was absolutely impossible for me to win" Yates said, after the ceremony.  "But God is known for doing the impossible, and I know it was only by His grace that I won!  I need to hurry and get back home, to see if I'm dreaming" he said.

To learn more about the music ministry of Jerry Yates, listen to some of his music, and find booking information, visit www.jerryyatesministries.com or www.indieheaven.com/artists/jerryyates.  Jerry's radio promotion is managed by RhonBob Promotions, www.rhonbob.com

Legacy Theatre Presents Smoke On The Mountain, Opening Jan. 31

Famous '30s Play Is a Prequel to A Sanders Family Christmas

If you liked the recent performance of A Sanders Family Christmas at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County, you will probably also like its prequel, Smoke on The Mountain, which will be performed soon at the Legacy Theatre in Tyrone.  There seems to be an increasing interest in the rural life of that time period ever since the popular movie and CD O Brother, Where Art Thou?.  For this reason, although we are now focussing our attention upon Christmas, it would probably be advisable to begin thinking now about this play before the tickets are all sold.  The following information is provided by the Theatre's publicity director, Dustin Lewis:

    SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN
Book by Constance Ray, Conceived by Alan Bailey, Musical arrangements by Mike Craver & Mark Hardwick.
    January 30th - Feb 22nd, 2009
    Performances:  Fridays-Saturdays 8pm; Saturdays-Sundays 3pm

Tickets: Adults $25; Seniors 60+/Students $22; Children 12 and under $15; Group rates available

The year is 1938. It's Saturday night in Mount Pleasant, NC, and the Reverend Oglethorpe has invited the Sanders Family Singers to provide an upliftin' evening of singin' and witnessin'. The audience is invited to pull up a pew and join in the rollicking good time. More than two dozen songs, many of them vintage pop hymns, and hilarious stories from the more or less devout Sanders provide a richly entertaining evening that has audiences clapping, singing, laughing and cheering.

    Hello everybody!

It is hard to believe that the concert day is less than a week away!  As you all know, we will be presenting "Christmas Mist" concert on December 6 at The Wadsworth Auditorium in Newnan once again.

Those who attended the Fall Benefit Concert know what a wonderful venue this is. The Wadsworth Auditorium is located a block away from the Historic Court Square in the heart of Newnan, already beautifully decorated for the Holiday Season. There are many stores and restaurants to visit before the concert. As The Wadsworth is barely a block away, cars can be parked around the square, taking a small stroll to attend the concert.

The show will start at 7:30 pm and will be followed by our traditional "Meet & Greet." This is most certainly an occasion for the whole family to share. As a special Christmas event for the kids that attend the concert, we will be offering a photo opp with the "Christmas Fairy" which will take place before the performance (6:30 pm - 7:20 pm.)

As a Christmas gift for all our friends and members, we will be running a special through the end of Tuesday.  WE ARE PRICING ALL TICKETS AT $10.00 IF PURCHASED THROUGH BROWN PAPER TICKETS AT OUR WEBSITEhttp://voicesonline.org/tickets.aspxPlease note that concert and photo opp tickets ($5.00)  need to be purchased separately. Please enter "special" as your discount code when at Brown Paper Tickets.  Since the concert is less than a week away, request for tickets to be left at Will Call.

The solo female ensemble Zaphyra – comprised by Maria Pia Ugarte, Jill Safko, Paige McCauley and Megan Zerbe -- will be offering solo and ensemble favorites like "Gesu Bambino," Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," "My Favorite Things," "Where Are You Christmas" and "Little Drummer Boy" among others. Young violinist Matthew Roberts returns to offer a rendition of Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise." Local male vocalist, J. Brock, joins Voices for the first time with soundtrack favorites "The Christmas Shoes" and "Believe" from "The Polar Express" as well as other numbers. Young harpist Kelly Abrams will also be performing as well as ballet dancer Stephanie Goehring and the Voices Youth Ensemble.

Carlos and Julissa Rodriguez from Carlos Salon in Peachtree City continue their association with Voices developing the hair design for "Christmas Mist."  Piano Crafters continues their support providing the beautiful grand piano for the night.  Argentinean Style Delights and Ten East Washington, both Newnan businesses, will provide some special treats for the "Meet & Greet" reception.

We look forward to seeing your there!

    Maria Pia Ugarte

    Artistic Director

[Letter To The Editor] VOICES Gives Charities Free Tickets To Concert On Saturday

A  PERSONAL  NOTE  TO  ALL  MY  NEWS  CONTACTS

I want to thank all of you for your help in getting the word out about the great accomplishments in the Coweta arts scene.  I also hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving and will have a Merry Christmas.

What you see below is not one of my "Tidbits" but a Letter To The Editor.  I feel strongly about this, so that I would like this to appear as a Letter To The Editor instead of as a part of the Tidbit I just issued about this same subject.

If I may be so bold as to offer a piece of advice, I think it would be good to stress news like this as a way of encouraging others to be generous as we enter this time when a lot of people will be facing financial challenges.  Here is someone doing something about it, not just griping!!

    Sincerely yours,

    Forrest W. Schultz

    LETTER TO THE EDITOR

"VOICES Gives Charities Free Tickets To Concert on Saturday"

The VOICES choral group has become well known in Southside arts circles for its excellent performances. It is now about to become well-known for its concern for those unable to afford to pay for the tickets. VOICES Artistic Director Maria Pia Ugarte has announced that free tickets are being given to three different area charities chosen by the VOICES membership.

Quite appropriately this Chrismas present will be for its "Chrismas Mist" Concert on Saturday at 8 PM at The Wadsworth in Newnan. I would encourage those attending the concert to stay for the Meet and Greet Reception in the Lobby afterward to thank her for this generosity. Others can express their appreciation by contacting her via www.VoiceOnLine.org.

The entities that have been awarded tickets are Angel's House and Community Welcome House in Newnan, as well as the Advice & Aid Pregnancy Problem Center in Hapeville.  It is a part of Voices mission to contribute to other deserving organizations in the community.  This Christmas, Voices and its members offer the gift of music to be enjoyed by the guests of these wonderful entities and hope to share the joy of the season as they do. "We also hope to raise awareness about their work and its importance," continued Ugarte.  "They are all most worthy causes and we hope the more people learn about them, the more they will want to contribute and get involved."

The night is made possible by the contribution of the talent involved, as well as the local businesses that are sharing their creative power.  Julissa Rodriguez from Carlos Salon in Peachtree City returns again in charge of hair design.  Piano Crafters is providing the grand piano for the event.  Argentinean Style Delights and Ten East Washington are sponsoring the Meet & Greet Reception.  These last three businesses are from the City of Newnan.  "Everybody's contribution and energy will make this wonderful night possible," explained Ugarte.

The concert will be preceded by a visit and special photo opp with the Christmas Fairy at 6:30 pm.   Tickets are available at the Voices website (www.VoicesOnline.org) and at Scott's Bookstore in Newnan (28 S Court Square, 770-253-2960.)  The concert starts at 7:30 pm at the Charles Wadsworth Auditorium (25 Jefferson Street, Newnan,) located in the Municipal Building, in between the Police and Fire Departments.  Information, details and directions are available at the Voices website or at 404-358-2950.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Clydesdale Horses Come To Grantville for Christmas (On Dec. 9)

The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases

Christmas Present From Grantville Day & LaGrange Grocery:

Clydesdale Horses Come To Grantville On December 9 !!

Toys And Food For Needy Children To Be Collected

All kinds of interesting things have happened in the history of Grantville.  The latest concerns the famous (Budweiser) Clydesdale Horses, which were part of the plans for this year's Grantville Day festival.  When the Clydesdales could not come to Grantville Day (whose official name this year was the Grantville Days Crosstie Festival), the Grantville Day Committee scheduled them instead for Tuesday December 9 as a Christmas present to Grantville to be part of this year's Grantville Christmas celebrations.  To be more precise, they are a Christmas present both from the Grantville Day Committee and from the LaGrange Grocery, which is also involved in the planning.

The Clydesdales will be on display both in their famous trotting mode and also stationery to give the spectators an opportunity to photograph these fabulous horses.  Since the Clydedales do not make that many appearances, anyone interested should be sure to take advantage of this opportunity.  They will only be here for two hours:  from 5:30 PM through 7:30 PM.  The place will be the site of Ann Long's trailers, which is located on Hwy. 29 going south about a quarter mile past Exit 35 on the left side of the road just past the gas-station/stores.

It is not certain where or not Santa will appear but one thing which will happen is that the spectators will be given an opportunity to play Santa by donating non-perishable foods and new unwrapped toys, which will be distributed to needy Grantville families for Christmas.

Information is available from Granville Day Chairman Sandra Luttrell at 770-304-6014 or sangalasands@aol.com.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] 16 Year Old Senoian Tyler Minix Has Art Show at Fayette County Library

Tyler Minix Art Show at Fayette County Library This Week

16 Year Old Senoia Boy Has Already Won Awards For His Paintings

Kathaleen Brewer enjoys teaching art, especially to enthustiastic students like 16 year old Tyler Minix of Senoia.  She has also enjoyed arranging for him to have his first art show at the Fayette County Library in Fayetteville.    Brewer says of Minix, "He is quickly approaching the gallery-entry level, but what I find even more unique is how Tyler enjoys himself in the studio. I've never seen a kid talk and laugh like he does while working. He's a real hoot."   Suddenly this year the arts began booming in the Coweta County City of Senoia.  Tyler Minix is the latest example of this buegeoning Senoia scene.

Brewer has just issued the following news release about this show and the artist:

Aspiring young artist, Tyler Minix, age 16, of Senoia has his work on display in the Fayette County Library. The exhibit will hang until the last day of November.

    Tyler's credits to date are:
    2002 Eastside Elementary Art Student of the Year ; 2003 Willis Rd. Elementary Art Student of the Year; 2004 Chosen to draw program for Nutcracker (13 years old);
    "Leonardo DaVinci" a graphite drawing hung in Coweta- Performing Arts Center (Age 13);
2005 Powers Crossroads – "Bass Pin & Ink" (Age13); 2006 Honorable Mention – 8th district congressional Art contest (Age 14). There is a picture of Tyler shaking Congressman Lynn Westmoreland's hand in front this painting.
Most recently he won the 2008 2nd Junior Bassmasters Art Contest (Age 16) and had his work published in their magazine. This piece was a watercolor and pen and ink.

Tyler studied with Sheryl Vickers of "Young Artist of Newnan" through Newnan's County Recreation Department from the 4th grade through the 8th grade. Then he began studying at the Fayette Art Center. At first he worked with Tatiana McCoy and then started learning acrylic and oil painting from Kathaleen Brewer. Since the Art Center closed, he continues to study with Ms. Brewer at the KB art Studio. Under Ms. Brewer's tutelage he is quickly conquering larger works. A beautiful example is his oil painting of the bulls. Tyler is currently working on his first consignment piece for Tom Camp, a lawyer. This painting is a large and personal rendition of the "Bear Dance" by William Holbrook Beard which was originally painted in 1870.

Tyler's goal is to win a scholarship to an art college. He is presently home schooled and loves hunting, fishing and camping.

Information on the Fayette County Library is available on  their website:
