Nature, Undisturbed 2010 Photography Exhibition Announced

Coweta Photographers Are Invited To Enter

Although Nature Undisturbed is a Fayette-based photography exhibition, entrants are not limited to residents of Fayette County.  Photographers from Coweta and other counties are invited to enter..  Last year several photographers from Coweta County had entries accepted and one of them, Paul Conlan of Newnan, won one of the awards presented.

The Director of Nature, Undisturbed 2010, Donna Rosser, has issued the following news release about this very important photographic arts event:

Nature Undisturbed 2010

2nd Annual Nature Photography Exhibition
Benefiting Southern Conservation Trust

Call For Entries - Deadline: January 30, 2010

2009 judge, Greg Newington
2009 judge, Greg Newington
Southern Conservation Trust invites you to participate in the 2nd annual juried nature photography celebration Nature, Undisturbed, which will benefit the Trust's conservation work in the Southern Crescent.

Nature, Undisturbed
April 16-April 24, 2010
Dogwood Gallery, Tyrone

Like the 2009 show, next year's exhibition will showcase the simple, yet majestic, beauty of nature, wildlife, and our local landscapes. Each unique image echos the sentiment "a picture is worth a thousand words"; a powerful reinforcement for the importance of greenspace and natural habitat protection for future generations of people and wildlife.
Amateur and professional photographers are encouraged to submit one or more nature photos in either one or both categories:
  • "Nature, Undisturbed" for photographs featuring nature in any location.
Nature Undisturbed is modeled on the very successful 7 year old SlowExposures Exhibition, held every September in Pike County. SlowExposures draws over 600 entries and attracts more than 1,000 folks each year to view and purchase quality photography. Quickly following in its footsteps, Nature, Undisturbed's innaugual year drew almost 200 hundred entries.

The Director of Nature, Undisturbed is Donna Rosser, the "barefoot photographer", a renowned local photographer and founder of the Fayette Photo Club.

Nature, Undisturbed will again showcase locally and internationally honored photographers. Cash Prizes will be awarded for each category, and to the Sponsor's Choice and the People's Choice. Details coming soon about judges and prizes.

Woodward Academy Donates Alley Loo To African Schools

Book Written By Newnan Author C. E. Walz

With so much disgusting stuff in the news it is a pleasure to report on some good news for a change.  Newnan author C. E. Walz, who has been in the news lately concerning her recently published award winning book Alley Loo, has announced that her employer, Woodward Academy in College Park, is donating copies of her book to schools in Africa which it has been assisting for some time.  Here is the article which Walz wrote about this great news, which can be found on her website, www.cewalz.com.

                                                     Alley Loo Goes to Africa

I've been a teacher at Woodward Academy for many years.  Founded in 1900 as Georgia Military Academy, Woodward is the oldest private school in Atlanta, Georgia.  Today it is the largest independent school in the continental United States.
Woodward has always been an advocate of community service.  During the course of each school year, students are involved in many community service projects including one of our largest projects, Terranova School in Mazabuka, Zambia.
Terranova School is a dream come true for coffee farmers Colin and Alison Street.  To help improve the lives of their employees and their children, the Streets built a school on their Zambian coffee plantation that was free to anyone who wished to attend.  Each year since 2001, they have added grades, teachers, and buildings until now, a school that was originally designed to teach 200 children, serves 380!
Woodward Academy has adopted Terranova School as a sister school, and in the past several years, has provided this Zambian school with books, clothing, teaching materials, computers, manpower for building projects, and even vision tests.

Behind-the-Scenes Talents Take the Stage for Annie Get Your Gun

The Twilight Theatre brings local talent to center stage in its upcoming production of the perennial favorite, Annie Get Your Gun. "I'm very impressed with the amount of talent we have right here in our own backyard," says Annie Get Your Gun Director Beth Nicholson. "It's fun to see another side of people you've seen for years at church or in the grocery store. Not only will the audience be entertained by the dancing, shooting, and recognizable music, they're going to enjoy seeing their friends, neighbors, and relatives in a new light."

By day,  Hannah Beth Potter is the Choral Director at  McIntosh  High School , and currently by night, she's the scrappy Annie Oakley. Mike Houghtaling, owner of ProMotion Video, can normally be found behind a video camera, but he'll soon be in the spotlight as Colonel Buffalo Bill Cody. Keith White, owner of several area NAPA Auto Parts stores, steps on stage as the witty and cunning Charlie Davenport. Rhonda Williams can usually be found in the pet boutique called Wags to Whiskers where she sells unique goodies for dogs and cats, but come September, she'll be taking the stage as the snobbish Sylvia Potter-Porter.

And not all the local talent is on stage. Twilight is delighted to be working once again with choreographer Kathy Senger of Peachtree City School of Dance. Mike Daniell, who works by day as the Music Director of  North  Fayette United  Methodist  Church , recently directed the Peachtree Wind Ensemble for Twilight's production of Oliver!  Now Mike and the Peachtree Wind Ensemble are back for Annie Get Your Gun. "I am always so impressed with the amount of local talent we have and their willingness to dedicate their time in order to put on such a quality production," said Alison Chambers, Artistic Director of The Twilight Theatre.

Annie Get Your Gun will be performed at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater September 18, 19, 25 and 26 at 8 p.m. Ticket are $15 for adults and $13 for students and seniors and can be purchased at Mimi's Good Food and Wags to Whiskers in Peachtree City; online at www.TheTwilightTheatre.com; from individual cast members; or by emailing tickets@TheTwilightTheatre.com.  For more information please contact Beth Nicholson atagygdirector@thetwilighttheatre.com.

The Place Author Bart Gibson in Book Signing at Powers Festival

There will be several Coweta County authors at the Powers Crossroads Festival this year to do signings of their books.  One of these is also one of Coweta's newest authors, Bart Gibson, who published his first book this year -- The Place.

Bart Gibson has lived in Coweta County for some time -- first in Moreland and now in Newnan -- but his roots are in Meriwether County, where he can trace his ancestors all the way back to the original settlers there.  It was the knowledge of, and influence of, these ancestors that eventually led him to write a novel of the rural South which is set in a sort of fictionalized Meriwether County during the close of World War II.  Gibson dedicates this novel, The Place, to all of his extended family members who have served in the military, but especially to his great-uncles who fought in World War II and served as the inspiration for the story.  Its publication is one of seven known books published by Coweta authors so far this year.   Bart Gibson is one of the newest member of the Coweta Writers Group and one of  the most recent example of the proliferation of new authors in Coweta County.

Anyone wishing to meet Gibson and acquire a signed copy of his book can come to the Powers Festival on September 7, when Gibson plans to be there.

Newnan Theatre Seeks Directors For Plays

From time to time we read about the Newnan Theatre (and other theatres) asking for audtions for cast members for their plays.  Now the Newnan Theatre is inviting people to apply for the position of Directors of their plays.  Exactly how this differs from an audtion is explained in the news release below about this issued by the Theatre's Publicity Director Dianne Olsen:

:  DIANNE OLSEN, PUBLICITY DIRECTOR, 770-683-6282

NCTC NEEDS DIRECTORS

Newnan Community Theatre Company (NCTC) is looking for directors for their 2010 season.  The seven shows on the Main Stage are "What the Butler Saw", "Death of a Salesman", "Cabaret", "Psycho Beach Party", "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds", "Fuddy Meers", and "Miracle on 34th Street."  Anyone interested in directing any of these shows needs to schedule a pitch meeting with Darren Mathews, the theatre's Artistic Director.

The "pitch" is a competitive audition of the director's vision of the play.  The meeting is informal, but a full knowledge of the play is recommended.   NCTC would like to hear a clear, fully thought-out idea with what the director wants to emphasize.   Some specifics about set, lights, sound, logo, publicity, etc. are always helpful.  The theater is full of talented people and space is plentiful, but because they are a community theatre; there are some limitations.  Please consider this when coming up with your vision.  The pitch idea chosen will be the one that best considers our audience while addressing the theater's resources and limitations, with the director's own unique vision on top.

The theatre will also be scheduling pitches for their Black Box Theater.   NCTC hopes to present black box shows during the weeks they are not presenting something on the main stage.  The funding for these shows will be low, but the content can be as diverse as you choose.   However, not all pitches can be accepted due to time, resources, and/or content.    Use the same criteria listed above when planning your pitch.

If you are interested in pitching a show for the 2010 season on either the main stage or in the black box, please contact Mathews via e-mail (artistic-director@newnantheatre.org) with the show, time of year,  director's name, phone number, e-mail and the best day of the week/time to schedule the pitch.

NCTC would like to hear from experienced directors, those who haven't directed at NCTC in a while, newer directors with just one or two shows under their belt, or even directors with no experience but have a great idea and energy to try and direct.

NCTC is located at 24 1st Avenue in downtown Newnan.  The next show on the main stage is "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer."  Show dates are Sept. 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, and 27.  For more information about the all-volunteer organization, call the theatre at (770) 683-6282 or visit their website at newnantheatre.org.

Hickman was the one who arranged for these book signings by Coweta authors to take place at last year's Powers Festival.  This will be the second year these signings are being held at Powers.  Hickman's importance as a Coweta writer can also be seen from the articles about his books published in Newnan's Times-Herald newspaper and from the inclusion of Hickman in the special article on Southside authors in the July 2009 issue of Lifestyles magazine.  Hickman is also a member of the rapidly growing Coweta Writers Group, half of whose 56  members are now published book authors.

African Children's Choir At Arts Centre on October 9

The Centre for Performing a Visual Arts of Coweta County has attracted performing artists from all over the nation and even from other countries.  On October 9 at 7 PM the Centre is presenting the noted Daraja Children's Choir of Africa in a special choral concert.   Admission is free, and donations will be accepted to benefit the African Children's Orphanage.

The music to be performed by this choir is described in this way on the Centre's website:

The music begins and the drums beat as the room fills with the sound of the Daraja Children's Choir of Africa. Dressed in their vibrant costumes with radiant smiles on their faces, the children express the joy and hope they have found in Christ through African song and dance. Daraja means "bridge" in Swahili, and these 24 orphaned and vulnerable children have journeyed across the bridge all the way from Kenya to bring you a taste of African worship and praise. The Choir wishes to inspire you with the hope and love they have found in Jesus Christ, in spite of the severe hardships they have faced. Their performances are a blend of traditional African song and dance and contemporary Christian music, which shares that hope in a unique and powerful way.

200th Book Published By Newnan-Based Jawbone Publishing Co.

Owner Swanee Ballman Expresses Gratitude To Coweta

Swanee Ballman has not only been contributing to the Coweta literary scene through her Newnan-based Jawbone Publishing Company, she has also contributed through her membership in the Coweta Writers Group and in the Christian Writers United and through being one of the speakers at last year's Newnan-based Southern Writers Conference.  Jawvbone recently pulblished its 200th book, which provided the opportunity for her
to think about what Coweta means to her, which she expressed in this news release:

Jawbone Publishing Corporation relocates to Newnan

Newnan, GA – Jawbone Publishing Corporation, formerly located in Kissimmee, FL, moved to Coweta County in late 2007. By the end of 2009, its new publishing and printing facility will be completed on property outside Newnan.

"We have the capacity to digitally print and bind books on the latest digital equipment, which we ordered from Denmark," said Swanee Ballman, president of Jawbone. "Printers once needed huge Heidelberg presses to do what we now print on equipment that doesn't take up much more space than a double-car garage."

Frank and Swanee Ballman chose to relocate to Coweta County after their son, Shane, was transferred to Atlanta. "With each visit to Newnan, we were more convinced that we wanted to live here. It's small enough to be family-oriented but large enough to meet all of our needs. That's exactly why we love it here," said Ballman, who closed their storefront in the shadows of Disney World, sold their home in Kissimmee, and bought property in Coweta County. "We love the people here as well as the change of seasons."

"Many authors and readers contact us through our website (www.JawbonePublishing.com). However, Georgia authors have already discovered us. We're presently working with six Georgia writers, four of whom reside in the Newnan-Sharpsburg area," said Ballman.

Along with Linda Jennings, Ballman is active in the newly formed Christian Writers United, which holds monthly meetings in Newnan. (For information,  contact lajennings@charter.net .)  This group is publishing its first anthology of short compositions in November.

"I worked with both private and public schools in Florida on student anthologies and hope to get local students fired up about writing," said Ballman, who has published nine titles and four screenplays of her own through three publishing houses. She has also received numerous awards for her writing. She is a former high school English teacher who served as a writing consultant for a large publishing house for eight years. She is also a former member of the board of the Florida Publishers Association and a regional director of the Florida Writers Association.

Ballman has spoken about writing before many organizations and can be contacted at marketing@JawbonePublishing.com.

Next up will be Arthur Miller's classic, "Death of a Salesman."  This show has never been done at the theatre.  Auditions will be February 1 and 2.  Show dates are March 19-28 and April 2-4.

The big musical for the year is "Cabaret" by Joe Masteroff.  "Cabaret" is the story of Sally Bowles, who performs at the Kit Kat Club.  She befriends an American writer in Germany just before WWII.  Liza Minelli was well-known for playing the lead role.  Auditions will be May 10 and 11.  Show dates are May 7-23.

Summertime brings the adventures of a surfing beach babe who happens to have split personalities and a unique criminal signature.  "Psycho Beach Party" by Charles Busch will hold auditions on May 10 and 11.  Show dates are June 25-27 and July 9-18.  There will be no shows the weekend of July 4th.

Paul Newman directed his wife, Joanne Woodward in "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds" by Paul Zindel.   The story is about an unbalanced mother and her two daughters, each daughter deals with their mother's illness differently, one mirrors her mother, while the other turns to a science experiment.   Auditions are scheduled for June 28 and 29. Show dates are August 20-29 and September 3-5.

The audience is taken on an odd journey, when a woman with amnesia is kidnapped by a masked, lisping, limping, partially deaf man in "Fuddy Meers" by David Lindsay-Abaire.   Auditions are scheduled for August 23 and 24.  Show dates are October 8-24.

The season will conclude with the heartwarming story of the "Miracle on 34th Street" which was adapted for the stage by Will Severin, Patricia DiBenedetto Snyder, and John Vreeke from the novel by Valentine Davies.  Auditions will be October 11 and 12.  Show dates are December 3-19.

Each 2010 show will run for three weekends.  Show dates are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Show times are 8 pm on Friday and Saturday and 2:30 on Sunday.  Along with adding an additional weekend for each show, the theatre will be reducing its ticket prices for next year.  Individual tickets for adults will be $12; for students (with valid ID) and seniors (55+), tickets will be $10; and for children (12 and under) tickets are $8.

Season tickets are available for purchase from the theatre's website, newnantheatre.orgSeason ticket holders receive discounted admission and a reserved seat for each show.  Season ticket prices are $70 for adults and $60 for seniors, students, and children.

If you are interested in directing any of the 2010 season show, pitch meetings will be held in October by Artistic Director Darren Mathews.  Contact Mathews at info@newnantheatre.org for more information on how to pitch a show.

If there are any changes to scheduled dates, they will be posted on the theatre's website.  NCTC has been providing live entertainment in downtown Newnan for over 30 years.  They are a non-profit, 100% volunteer run theatre.  The theatre is located at 24 1st Avenue.  For information about current shows, call the theatre at (770) 683-6282.

Swanee Ballman Publishes Exodus From America

Swanee Ballman keeps very busy with her Newnan-based Jawbone Publishing Company but she still manages to squeeze out enough time to continue writing her own books.  Since moving to Coweta from Florida, she has written two novels -- Day Zero last year and now, hot off the press, Exodus From America.  Here is what she has to say about her latest one:  "What happens when a group of conservatives devises an alternative to life under an extreme, progressive President? What happens to them? What happens to the United States?"

Information on her Jawbone Publishing Company is available on its website www.jawbonepublishing.com and information on her own books is available at

www.jawbonepublishing.com/ballman.htm

Swanee Ballman is a member of the Coweta Writers Group and is a co-founder of  Christian Writers United, which is based in Newnan.  She has also contributed to the Coweta literary scene by publishing (through Jawbone) books by several other Coweta writers and by being one of the speakers at last year's Newnan-based Southern Writers Conference.

Ballman is also contributing through her own writing to the burgeoning Coweta literary arts scene whose writers for the past three years have been having books published at the rate of one per month.  This rate is continuing into 2009:  Exodus From America is the seventh book published by Coweta writers so far this year.

MISERY AUDITIONS CANCELED

Auditions for Misery by Stephen King, adapted for the stage by Simon Moore, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 24 and 25 at the Newnan Community Theatre Company have been canceled.

The theatre has learned from Samuel French, the licensing company for the play, that the rights have been frozen.  This means no theatre is able to put on the show at this time.  This is due to the fact that a Broadway revival of the play is in the works.

The theatre is looking into alternatives for their November season show and details will be announced when they become available.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Mae Nunn Publishes Another "Texas Treasures" Novel

Mae Nunn Publishes Another "Texas Treasures" Novel

Anyone who is familiar with Coweta author Mae Nunn knows that, although she now has resided in Georgia for many years, her heart is still in her native Texas, or, as Lifestyles magazine put it last month in their article about Southside writers, "You can take the girl out of Texas, but you cannot take Texas out of the girl" !!  It is for this reason that she launched her series of Texas Treasures Romance Novels in 2005.  The fifth in this series has just been published, A Texas Ranger's Family,

which has just received at 4.5 star rating from Romantic Times.

When Mae goes to book signings she dresses like a Texas cowgirl, but this is NOT an act!  She dresses that way because that is what she is!  She also is not kidding when on her website there is a picture of a cowgirl boot accompanying her motto of "Inspiration With a Kick", because her particular genre is inspirational romance, most of which is in the Texas Treasures series.  Speaking of websites, hers is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen and there is good info there on her and all of her books.  Information on her latest book as well as her earlier ones can also be found on www.amazon.com.  Her website address is www.MaeNunn.com

Nunn is a member of the Coweta Writers Group.  Her books are published by Steeple Hill.  She recently retired from her job and is now planning on writing two books per year instead of one.

Three Coweta Photographers In SlowExposures Exhibition:

Paul Conlan, Gary Gruby, Carla Cook Smith

In each year since its establishment there have been Coweta County photographers with entries accepted into the Slow Exposures Photographic Exhibition of the Rural South.  As the word has gotten out about the prestigious nature of this show, there have been more and more submissions from photographers all across the nation, making it more difficult each year to get admitted.  This year there were three photogrpahers from Coweta County who had entries accepted:  Paul Conlan, Gary Gruby, and Carla Cook Smith.  There were a total of 93 images accepted by the juror out of a total of 641 submitted.

The schedule and other information is provided on this website

www.slowexposures.org., which describe the Exhibition in these words:

Celebrating Photography of the Rural South
September 18-20 & 23-27, 2009
Pike County, Georgia

About SlowExposures
Since its beginning in 2003, SlowExposures volunteers have created an annual celebration of photography to remind visitors to "slow down" by letting the images surprise, educate, reacquaint and challenge their perceptions of the rural south. Most of the events during the two week show are held in National Historic Registered buildings—it's a way to provide authentic historical context for the photographs and to assist in the structures' preservation and reuse.
Located one hour south of Atlanta's metropolitan airport, SlowExposures attracts over 1,000 visitors to see exceptional work at the main and satellite exhibits, attend workshops and salons, and to take part in the black-tie SlowExposures Ball on Saturday night of opening weekend.
This year, the traditional home of SlowExposures is undergoing a much-anticipated renovation—the show will be moved to the Historic Candler Field Museum in Williamson, Georgia. The Airfield is both a working airfield that specializes in antique aircraft and the beginnings of an ambitious recreation of Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport as it existed in the 1920's. SlowExposures 2009 promises to be a fascinating and unique collaboration of technology, history and fine art, set in the rural ambiance of Pike County.
