Southside Artists Mourn The Passing of Barbara Scruggs

Barbara Scruggs was not only a good artist but also a good organizer.  She strongly supported the Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA) which she served in various capacities including being its delegate to the the Newnan-Coweta Arts Council, where she served for a time as Secretary.  She was also a strong advocate of co-operation among the various Southside art associations for which reason she was very active in the Southern Crescent Alliance of Visual Artists, serving twice as its President (in 2004 and 2007).  Although what happened was tragic, it is perhaps fitting that she died "with her boots on" while helping to organize the reception for the Second Annual Juried Exhibit of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association last week at the Centre for Perforning and Visual Arts of Coweta County.  Barbara will be missed; her passing is a grievous loss for the Coweta and Southside arts scene.

Her Journey's Just Begun

Don't think of her as gone away-
Her journey's just begun.
Life holds so many facets-
this earth is only one.

Just think of her as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of her as living
in the hearts of those she touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost-
and she has loved so much.
-- Ellen Brennerman

Dear Friends

As you have probably heard, our dear friend and active fellow Republican, Barbara Scruggs, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2007.  What a total shock since I had no idea that she had any serious physical problems.  She has been a very good friend of mine for many years, and we e-mailed all the time.  In fact, when she found out that I wanted to be a delegate to the NFRW National Convention in California in September, she nominated me from the floor of the April 2007 GFRW meeting.

Barbara was currently a District Director of the GFRW and Corresponding Secretary of the Coweta County RW. She has been active in the Coweta GOP, the GFRW and in her district for many years.  She has also worked in MANY campaigns for our Republican elected officials including our current and first ever Republican Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Karen Handel, our first Republican Secretary of State.

She passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack Tuesday, June 19, 2007.

"Barb collapsed at THE CENTRE OF PERFORMING ARTS kitchen, as she put her finger food sandwiches on plates for our BIG RECEPTION table.  I had just hugged her not 10 minutes prior as she and I were talking as she arrived, and we were both so excited about the evening, that as it ended up was close to 400 guests attending.  We had all sent out invitations to friends, family, church members, etc.  Barbara herself handled maybe about 100-150 invites to all the dignitaries of Newnan and the County. We will never be able to replace the work she did for us and the Newnan Coweta Art Association, Inc.  We all will certainly miss her and still can't imagine we won't see her at meetings but someday will see her in Heaven.  God was with her to the end, as she was doing what she loved and among all her friends when he called her home."

Eunice E Nichols, President
Newnan Coweta Art Association, Inc

As many of you know, she was a very talented artist, and two of her paintings were on display during the visitation Saturday at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan.

Barbara was a true patriot, and we shall miss her very much. Our prayers go out to her family in their time of grief.

Send your cards to her husband, W. G. (Bill) Scruggs, at 842 Mike Powers Road, Grantville, GA 30220-1640.

New Carrollton Gallery Invites Coweta Artists to Exhibit

The cultural renaissance of the Southside is evident not only in the great accomplishments of its artists, arts organizations, and arts venues but also in the spirit of co-operation among the various Southside counties.  For instance, Coweta artists have been very pleased at the welcome they have received from the arts community in neighboring Fayette County.  The latest example of welcome extended to Coweta's artists is from a newly opened gallery in Carrollton.  The Newnan-Coweta Art Association has just announced the receipt of the following invitation from the Manger, Jonathan Reed:

Native Texan Jim Baggett Bringing Cowboy Poetry Book to CABSE

Most of Coweta's writers of published books are accepting the invitation to attend the first-ever Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE) in September.  As information about these authors is being released it is evident that there is a tremendous and interesting variety among them.  For instance, two of them are native Texans who celebrate their love for Texas in their writings.  Last week an announcement was issued about one of these -- a cowgirl named Mae Nunn, who now lives in Sharpsburg, who writes Texas roamce novels.  The other is a cowboy named Jim Baggett, who now lives in Grantville, and who has written a book of cowboy poems.  Both Nunn and Baggett are member of the Coweta Writers Group.

In addition to affording an opportunity to meet Baggett and acquire an autographed copy of his book, the CABSE will also give those attending a chance to hear Baggett read some of these poems.  The CABSE will be a special feature of the New Grantville Days Festival, which will be held on Main Street in Grantville, a small city in southern Coweta County at Exit 35 on Interstate 85.  The CABSE will be held from 10 AM through 5 PM on Saturday September 15 and from 12 Noon through 5 PM on Sunday September 16.  There is no charge to attend either the CABSE or the rest of the New Grantville Days Festival.

Bagget can be reached at Jim Baggett <texan1945@msn.com>, the Co-ordinator of the CABSE, Forrest Schultz, can be reached at 770-5834-3258 or schultz_forrest@yahoo.com, and the Chairman of the New Grantville Days Festival, Sandra Luttrell, can be reached at 770-583-9013 or sangalasands@aol.com.

[CWG News Release] Coweta Writers Group Meetings Resume and Members Get Published

Coweta Writers Group Is "Back In Business" !!

Monthly Meetings To Resume on July 12

Five Newly Published Books by CWG Members

Borrowing phraseology from Mark Twain, rumors of the death of the Coweta Writers Group (CWG) have been "highly exaggerated"!  After a hiatus of inactivity, the Group is back on track -- regular monthly meetings will soon by resumed and five CWG members have just had new books published.  These meeting will henceforth be devoted mainly to critiquing of each other's writings.  The first of the resumed meetings will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday July 12 in the Conference Room of the Newnan-Coweta Public Library on Hospital Road in Newnan.

The recent publishing spate by CWG writers began in December of last year when John Hickman's long-awaited first novel came out (Man in Muddy Creek), and when Todd hardage's second book saw the light of day (Word Portraits:  Poetry by Todd K. Hardage).  Information on these books can found on their websites:   www.jhickman.com  and http://thardage.blogspot.com.

Last month tow more books were published:  Mom In The Middle (the third in the Texas Treasures Romance Series) by native Texan Mae Nunn and My Name Is Mary by Mary Bradley Busser, who will celebrate her 92nd birthday next month, which sounds incredible but is "par for the course" for Coweta County, where anything can happen!  Information on these books can be found on the websites of these two fine ladies:  www.maenunn.com and www.mynameismary.net.

And last week the newest CWG mewmber, Mike Ottensmeyer, had his first book published, The Melon Boys, under the psedonym Michael George.  Information on this book is available on this brand new website www.themelonboys.com

All five of these CWG writers will be present at the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE( to be held on Saturday September 15 and Sunday September 16 as part of the New Grantville Days Festival.  Info on the CABSE and the CWG is available from Forrest Schultz at 770-583-3258 or schultz_forrest@yahoo.com.

Mae Nunn of Sharpsburg Will Mosey On Down to CABSE

Native Texan Writes Texas Romance Novels "With a Kick"

Mae Nunn lives in Sharpsburg now but she still loves her native State of Texas and still loves dressing like a cowgirl.  She now also expresses her love for things Texan by writing Texas romance novels.  Last month she wrote the third book of her Texas Treasures" series and she has already started work on her fourth.  Her Texan personality is manifest in her writing style, which is romance "with a kick".  And, since she loves being around people and loves dressing up like a cowgirl and loves autographing her books, it is not surprising that she will be moseying on down to Grantville in September for the first ever Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza, to which all Coweta authors of a published book have been invited.  However, she will not be arriving on horseback -- the closest she comes to horses these days is riding around in her beautiful bright yellow Mustang convertible.

The Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE) will be held on Saturday September 15 from 10 AM through 5 PM and on Sunday September 16 from 12 Noon through 5 PM as a special feature of the New Grantville Days Festival.  Eighteen Coweta authors have so far agreed to attend with the total expected to rise to about 20 - 22.  The purpose of the CABSE is to spotlight the literary aspect of the Coweta arts scene by providin the public with an opportunity to meet Coweta's writers and obtain autographed copies of their books.  Grantville is located at Exit 35 on Interstate 85.  Info on the CABSE is available from Forrest Schultz at 770-583-3258; info on Grantville Day is available from Sandra Luttrell at 770-593-9013.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Walter Skinner, Important Moreland Author, at CABSE

Author Important For Moreland To Participate in CABSE

Walter Skinner Wrote Books on RR and Moreland's General Store

It was recently reported that one of the participants in the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza in September will be Sara Jane Skinner, who is important for Moreland in serving as Lewis Grizzard's English teacher and in writing a book about the Moreland Mill.  Well, it just so happens that her husband Walter Skinner is also a Moreland author whose books are important for his town:  his Cureton-Cole tells us about the general store which served Moreland for many years and The Atlanta and West Point Railroad Company Remembered, which, among other things, tells us about the railroad's physician, Dr. John Moreland, from whom the town gets its name.  Concerning the store, it is noteworthy that the biographical information provided by the Lewis Grizzard Museum refers to Grizzard  "enjoying the camaraderie of Cureton-Cole Store".  Sara Jane and Walter Skinner are also signiificant for the Moreland literary scene as the parents of Winston Skinner, whose continuing interest in the town is evident in his service as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Erskine Caldwell Museum there.

The Skinners will not have far to travel to get to the CABSE:  it will be right down the road at the next town, Grantville, which is named after Mr. L. P. Grant, the President of the Railroad.  (Moreland and Grantville really liked their Railroad!) Grantville is at Exit 35 on Interstate 85 about an hour south of Atlanta.  The Book Signing will be a special feature of The New Grantville Days Festival, which will be held during the third weekend of September.  This Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza will provide all those attending the Festival with an opportunity to meet these authors and to acquire autographed copies of their books.  The Signing will be held from 10 AM throught 5 PM on Saturday September 15 and from 12 Noon through 5 PM on Sunday September 16.  There is no charge to attend either the Festival or the Signing.

Sara Jane and Walter Skinner can be reached at wwskinner@yahoo.com.  Information on the CABSE it available from its Coordinator Forrest Schultz at 770-583-3258 or schultz_forrest@yahoo.com.  Information on the New Grantville Days Festival is available from its Chairman Sandra Luttrell at 770-583-9013 or sangalasands@aol.com

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Important Writer For Moreland, Sara Jane Skinner, to Come to CABSE

Writer Important For Moreland to Come to CABSE

Sara Jane Skinner Taught Lewis Grizzard; and Wrote The Mill

One of the most interesting guest speakers to address the Coweta Writers Group was Sara Jane Skinner of Moreland.  She has the distinction of being Lewis Grizzard's high school English teacher and of being the author of one of the most important works about Coweta County's history, The Mill, which is the story of the Moreland Mill, once very important for Moreland's economy and now one of Moreland's most important museums.  In case anyone is wondering -- Yes, she is also the mother of the famous Times-Herald reporter, Winston Skinner!

Sara Jane Skinner is still a very spunky lady so it is no surprise that even thought she is now elderly that she will be one of the writers participating in the first ever Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE) being held on the third weekend in September.  All Coweta authors of a published book have been invited and eighteen have so far agreed to attend, with the total expected to reach around 20 -22.  The CABSE will be a special feature of the New Grantville Days Festival, which will be held on Main Street in Grantville, a small city in southern Coweta County at Exit 35 on Interstate 85.  The Signing will be held on Saturday September 15 from 10 AM through 5 PM and on Sunday September 16 from 12 Noon through 5 PM.  This CABSE will provide anyone attending the Festival an opportunity to meet Coweta's authors and to obtain autographed copies of their books.  Information on the CABSE is available from its Co-ordinator Forrest Schultz at 770-583-3258 or schultz_forrest@yahoo.com.

"Honey Bee Bears" Author Ruth Schroeder Coming to CABSE

"Write About What You Know!"  A good illustrative example of this dictum is Ruth Schroeder of Newnan.  During her childhood in Maine Ruth had the unusual experience of observing the antics of wild baby bears in the woods near her home.  She used this knowledge to create several interesting children's books about "Honey Bee Bears" -- a phrase found in each of the titles. She loves these Honey Bee Bears so much that she has even had special teddy bears made which are called Honey Bee Bears.

There will be an opportunity to meet Ruth and obtain autographed copies of her delightful books at the first-ever Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE) to which all Coweta authors have been invited to participate.  So far eighteen authors have agreed to come, with the total expected to rise to about 20 - 22.  The CABSE will be a special feature of the New Grantville Days Festival which will be held during the third weeked in September on Main Street in Grantville, a small city in southern Coweta County located at Exit 35 on Interstate 85.  The CABSE will be held from 10 AM through 5 PM on Saturday September 15 and 12 Noon through 5 PM on Sunday September 16.  Admission to the Festival itself and the Signing are free of charge

Ruth can be contacted at Ruth Schroeder <honeybeebears@juno.com>.  Information on the New Grantville Days Festival can be obtained from its Chairman, Sandra Luttrell at sangalasands@aol.com or 770-583-9013..
