Newnan Theatre Announces Improv Experiment on June 6

Starting last year the Newnan Theatre became known not only for plays but also for its Improv Troupe.  Now the Theatre is announcing an experiment in which the two of these will be COMBINED!!  In case you are wondering how this can be, here is how the Theatre's Publicity Director Dianne Olsen explains it:

If you're looking for a completely unique evening out, Newnan Community Theatre Company (NCTC) presents "Improvisational Experiment" Saturday, June 6 at 8 pm.

A group of actors from NCTC are experimenting with a different form of improv.  Their mission is to produce and perform a real and highly original play completely improvised based on the audience's decision.

The group will supply the audience with a list of five common literary themes as the starting point. The audience will select one of the 5 for the group to do a show about. They will break into pairs to brainstorm and perform. The audience will decide which stories progress until they get to their final scene.  There will be three rounds.  As each round ends, the audience will decide which storyline continues.  Pairs that are eliminated are added into the remaining scenes until they are all in the last and final scene.

Organized by Jeff Allen and Spencer Jordan, the group also includes Susan Patterson, Trey Stephens, Leslie Ray, JohnPaul Phillips, and Kim Marshall.

The evening costs $25 and includes a meal, dessert, and drinks. Seating is limited to 60 people.  You can purchase tickets online through the theatre's website or call the theatre at (770) 683-6282 for reservations.

NCTC is located at 24 1st Avenue in downtown Newnan.  In June, the theatre will also offer a potluck murder mystery called Family Reunion, KidsCamp for children aged 5 to 12, and an evening of improvisational comedy by the NITWITS on June 27th.  For information on all of these events and other upcoming happenings, visit their website at newnantheatre.com.

Newnan Theatre Announces "Family Reunion Potluck Murder Mystery"

Theaters as well as novelists keep on coming up with new kinds of murder mysteries.  Here is the latest one I have heard of, which is presented by our own Newnan Theatre here in Coweta County -- the county where anything can happen!!  Here is the Theatre's Publicity Director Dianne Olsen discussion of it:

Come join the Newnan Community Theatre Company for their first Family Reunion! It is a potluck murder mystery!

The story is as follows: Scott Smith (known to the family as Great Scott), the patriarch of the Smith family (and holder of the family fortune), has called a reunion in order to make final changes to his will before he passes on. Everyone in the family feels they have a claim to the money. Each member wants to discredit the others in order to increase their own inheritance. Some people will stop at nothing to get that money...even murder!

The event will be held on June 20th.  Doors open at 6:30.  Here's how it works. During the reunion, you (and your team if you have one) will follow the cast members around the gathering, listening to private conversations. You find clues, search for evidence, and try to solve the crime.

You'll be assigned a place on the family tree (we're all related!).  Participants are encouraged to come and act as their character.  Just like many family reunions, participants are to bring a dish.

Tickets are $10 each ($20 if you would like a commemorative t-shirt), and must be purchased in advance. To purchase tickets visit the theatre's website at newnantheatre.com or call (770) 683-6282.

Newnan Community Theatre Company is located at 24 1st Avenue in downtown Newnan.  For further questions, you can also email the

Coweta Students Abby Mortensen & Kelsi Adams

In Backyard Kids Theatre Production of Cinderella On June 13 & 14

Lisa Sunderman McCauley, the General Manager of the Fayette-based Backyard Kids Theatre, has announced that there will be two Coweta County students involved in the Theatre's production of Cinderella next month.   Abby Mortensen, a fifth grade student at Cannongate Elementary School, will be playing the role of the cloth merchant and will be among those cast members singing solos.  Kelsi Adams, a 17 year old student at Northgate High School will be serving on the Creative Team as the Make-Up & Hair Co-ordinator.

The idea of kids putting on their own theatrical production was formed by Paige McCauley, Camille Edwards, and Chase Thomaston and is supported by their parents.  Consequently this theatrical troupe is organized, managed, and supervised by the McCauley, Edward, and Thomaston families.  Its mission is to allow high school and middle school students to use their creativity in directing, casting, acting, and choreographing the shows themselves.  It also provides opportunities for talented middle school performers to take parts that they usually would not be permitted to take due to their age.  Additional information can be found on their website http://backyardkidstheatre.org.

The website carries this announcement about their next show, Cinderella:

Music by Richard Rodgers

Books and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II

From the Teleplay by Robert L. Freedman

The Place By Coweta Author Bart Gibson Is Published

Bart Gibson has lived in Coweta County for some time -- first in Moreland and now in Newnan -- but his roots are in Meriwether County, where he can trace his ancestors all the way back to the original settlers there.  It was the knowledge of, and influence of, these ancestors that eventually led him to write a novel of the rural South which is set in a sort of fictionalized Meriwether County during the close of World War II.  Gibson dedicates this novel, The Place, to all of his extended family members who have served in the military, but especially to his great-uncles who fought in World War II and served as the inspiration for the story.  Its publication now brings to four the total of known books published by Coweta authors so far this year.

Bart Gibson is the newest member of the Coweta Writers Group and the most recent example of the proliferation of new authors in Coweta County.  His book can be purchased from Scotts Book Store on the Courthouse Square in downtown Newnan or it can be checked out of the Newnan Library on Hospital Road (which is now called the A. Mitchell Powell, Jr. Public Library).  Announcements are expected soon about articles, reviews, and book signings for The Place

Wacky Comedy Up Next at NCTC

Newnan Community Theatre Company's 2009 Season continues on May 22nd with the opening of the musical comedy Lucky Stiff.  Lonely shoe salesman Harry Witherspoon (portrayed by NCTC newcomer Robbie Kirkland) finds out he has inherited $6 million from a distant uncle he's never met.  Of course there's a catch – he must take his dead uncle (portrayed by John Chappell, the lucky stiff) on one last adventure to Monte Carlo.

If Harry doesn't follow the terms of the will, the money will go to Uncle Anthony's favorite charity, the Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn..  Harry is followed by Annabel Glick (Heather Hyde), a dog lover who is watching Harry's every move.  In Monte Carlo, Luigi Gaudi, a flashy Italian portrayed by Jamie French, volunteers to be Harry and Anthony's tour guide.   Annabel and Harry aren't the only ones interested in Tony's money.  Tony's mistress, Rita La Porta (Sarah Jordan), and her brother, Vinnie Di Ruzzio (Sam Gentry), are also following Harry and Tony.

This zany comedy was written by Lynn Ahrens with music by Stephen Flaherty.  It's being directed by Tony Peregoy.  There are numerous song and dance numbers as we go along with Harry and Uncle Tony's adventures in Monte Carlo.  The show was choreographed by Rachael Shaw.

This is Tony Peregoy's directorial debut at NCTC.  His theatre career began 12 years ago as a stagehand.  Since then he has been building and painting sets, auditioning for roles, teaching acting, and directing shows.  Peregoy has appeared in over a dozen plays and has directed several plays for a variety of community theatres.  Peregoy lives in Alabama and works in Newnan.

Lucky Stiff  has given two families the opportunity to volunteer at the theatre together.  Along with Sam Gentry as Vinnie, the cast includes Sam's wife, Renee, as Mrs. Loomis; and their daughter, Kelsey Gentry as a bellhop.  Their son, Wyatt, is helping in the light booth.   Diana Kline (the nurse) and her daughter, Heather Hyde (Annabel), have been long-time NCTC actors.  However, this is the first time the mother-daughter duo have appeared in the same show.

The cast is a mixture of newcomers and NCTC long-time favorites.  Matthew Bailey returns to the NCTC stage as a leper.  Newcomers include Susan Perkins (Miss Thorsby), Chip Saunders (waiter), Kim Ham (landlady), and Jimmy Johnson (solicitor).  Additional cast members in the show are Meghan Hubbell (Dominique), Megan Martin (French maid), and Kim Marshall (nun).

The theatre is proud to announce the completion of the installation of an air conditioning and heating system on the main stage.  Thanks to Jason and Hollie Schmidt of Horizon Heating & Air of Newnan (horizonheating.net), you can enjoy Lucky Stiff in air conditioned comfort.

May 22nd, opening night, is Free Popcorn Night.  Lucky Stiff is scheduled for six performances.  Show dates are May 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, and 31.  Show times on Friday and Saturday evenings are 8:00 pm and 2:30 on Sundays.  The cost to attend the show is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (55+) and students, and $10 for children (12 and under).  Lucky Stiff is rated PG-13.  Tickets may be purchased from the theatre's website (newnantheatre.com).  You can also make a reservation by calling the theatre at (770) 683-6282 or emailing NCTC at nctc@numail.org.

The Newnan Community Theatre Company is completely volunteer-run.  The theatre is located in downtown Newnan at 24 1st Avenue, at the corner of Long Place and 1st Avenue.

Orlando Ballet Summer Intensives Accept Two Classical Dance Theatre Students

An announcement was recently made about three of Newnan's Classical Dance Theatre students being accepted into the American Ballet Theatre's prestigious Summer Intensive training program, a great accomplishment!  Well, as amazing as this is, it turns out that there is yet more to announce.  One of these same students, Meghan Novoa, has also been accepted into another prestigious Summer Intensive Program, the one run another of our nation's top ballet schools, the Orlando Ballet in Orlando, Florida.  And another Classical Dance Theatre (CDT) student will be joining her there:  Victoria Smith.
This is the information released by the CDT Publicity Director Greta Watkins:

Two CDT Dance Students Accepted Into Orlando Ballet's Summer Intensive

Victoria Smith, of Newnan,  has been accepted to attend Orlando Ballet School's 2009 Summer Intensive Program.  Miss Smith trains at Classical Dance Theatre (CDT) in Newnan.  After a highly competitive audition process, Miss Smith was selected to attend five weeks of training at one of the most prestigious dance schools in the U.S.

Orlando Ballet School graduates have danced with American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Hamburg Ballet, and the National Ballet of Spain, just to name a few.  The Orlando Ballet Summer Intensive Program features six hours of daily classes taught by Orlando Ballet faculty and guests.

Also accepted into the Orlando Ballet Summer Intensive is CDT dancer, Meaghan Novoa.  Miss Novoa, also a Newnan resident, received a scholarship to attend the summer intensive.  Both dancers will be performing at the upcoming CDT Spring Concert to be held on Saturday, May 30 at Our Lady of Mercy in Fairburn.  For more information, call the CDT studio at 770-252-5515 or visit www.classicaldancetheatre..com.

Holly Moulder YA Novel Wins an Eric Hoffer 2009 Award

Cord Of Three Strands To Be Made Into A Movie

Coweta author (and former school teacher) Holly Moulder is a very busy woman these days:  she has been speaking to schools all over Georgia and nearby states about her first two books.  There has been an especial interest in her first one (published in 2007), Eyes Of The Calusa, in the state of Florida because that is where the Calusa tribe used to live, and no one had written a novel about them prior to Moulder's book.

Moulder has just announced two triumphs in regard to her second book, published last year, A Cord Of Three Strands.  The book won first runner up in the Young Adult category of the 2009 Eric Hoffer Awards for Short Prose and Independent Books.  (See the announcement:  http://www.hofferaward.com/HAbookwinners..html#young.) This permits her to put a nice shiny gold sticker on the cover and this plaudit (from The US Review), on her website (www.WhitePelicanPress.com):

A Cord of Three Strands, Holly Moulder, White Pelican Press - In 1838 America, two lives intersect. John, a thirteen-year old, crippled Cherokee boy, is torn between his responsibility to The People as their new medicine man and helping a new friend in her desperate run toward freedom. Annie is a twelve-year old runaway slave traveling the Underground Railroad. How do a wooden horse, the "world's most learned pig," and a young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln figure into their lives? This historical fiction account moves the reader through a variety of experiences including Cherokee customs and medicine, plantation life of a slave, steamboat travel, and the dangers along the Underground Railroad. Moulder has done an excellent job incorporating vast amounts of detail into a compelling story that shows there are always at least two sides to any account.

The second triumph is that the book is being made into a movie by Back Fence Productions, owned by Terry Chase Chenowith, who recently moved to Coweta County.  The screenplay is now being written and the casting is beginning.

Holly Moulder is a member of the Florida Publishers Association and of the Coweta Writers Group. She is one of an ever growing number of Coweta authors who are experiencing the excitement of having their first book published, which has caused such a burgeoning of book publishing here that Coweta authors are now having books published at the rate of one book per month!  Moulder can be reached at 770-251-4764 or fishermoulder@aol.com.

American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive Education Program

Accepts Three Classical Dance Theatre Students:  Novoa, Olson, Yim

The American Ballet Theatre (ABT), headquarted in New York City, is generally regarded as the best (or one of the best) ballet companies in the US.  Newnan's Classical Dance Theatre has announced that three of its students have been accepted into ABT's 2009 Summer Intensive Education program:  Meaghan Novoa, Sarah Olson, and Nani Yim.  The Publicity Director of CDT, Greta Watkins, has just released the following information concerning this great achievement:

Three Classical Dance Theatre Students Accepted into

American Ballet Theatre's Prestigious Summer Intensive

Three outstanding students who train at Classical Dance Theatre (CDT) will be attending American Ballet Theatre's Summer Intensive program in July.

Sarah Olson, Nani Yim, and Meaghan Novoa will be training in the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) summer training program, which "has earned a reputation as being the most thorough and rewarding experience a student can have during the summer ,"  according to the ABT website.

At the ABT Summer Intensive, these students will train in a minimum of four classes each day taught be ABT artistic faculty, alumni, and guest artists.  Classes will include ballet technique, pointe, partnering, variations, jazz, modern, hip-hop, acting for dancers, nutrition, dance history, yoga, music, injury prevention, among others.

According to ABT's Artistic Director, Kevin McKenzie, the " mission of ABT's Summer Intensive is to cultivate a universal understanding of the art form [dance] at its highest level, emphasizing not only the importance of high quality and brilliant technique, but also dance as an expressive vehicle to create art.."  ABT's Summer Intensive seeks to prepare dancers to be versatile as artists so they will have the tools to work with any dance company.

Miss Olson and Miss Novoa will be training in the ABT Summer Intensive held in Alabama, and Miss Yim will be training in the Detroit location.

All three dancers will be performing in the upcoming CDT Spring Concert to be held at Our Lady of Mercy in Fairburn on Saturday, May 30.  For more information, contact CDT at 770-252-5515 or visit www.classicaldancetheatre.com.

Westerns Author "Buddy" Simmons Publishes Two Novels:

Fighting Skypilot and Fugitive's Revenge

George "Buddy Simmons" of Newnan has had various avocations in his long life, one of the most enjoyable being the writing of Westerns.  He has had several Western short stories published in the Louis L'Amour Magazine and was about to have his two Western novels published by the same press when he discovered to his horror that the Editor had died and the publishing company consequently had gone out of business.  Then, before he recovered from that shock he himself almost died from several heart attacks, which made him expedite his plans to get the novels published elsewhere while he was still among the living.  His experience provides a good illustration of the fact that sometimes the adventures in getting a book published are as interesting as the adventures in the story in the book!

His two books were published recently as electronic books, which will later switch to print.  They are available by visiting this part of the Tercoe website: http://www.tercoe.com/author-buddy-simmons.html.

One of the stories, Fighting Skypilot, features Jake Picket, ex-gunfighter turned Skypilot (a Preacher) who uses his guns to save the home of a widow and her son, thereby providing a very humerous and spellbinding account of justice in the old west.

The second novel Fugitive's Revenge, is described in this way on the Tercoe site:
"Eighteen year old Roy Buttress is the last survivor of the Buttress/Doaks feud. Tired of the killing, he moves to Alabama seeking peace, but his whereabouts are discovered. His fight to survive and his retaliation make for a sometimes hair-raising story."

Ever more members of the Coweta Writers Group are enjoying the experience of getting their first book published.  "Buddy" Simmons is the most recent example.

Kimberly Campbell's Bio of Lois Duncan Is Published

(Book Is In Enslow Publishers Authors Teens Love Series)

Coweta author Kimberly Campbell has ended her sabbatical and resumed her writing of the biographies in the Authors Teens Love Series under her contract with Enslow Publishers.  Her first book in the contract was the biography of Richard Peck which was published in 2007.  She recently had the second one published (earlier this Year), the biography of Lois Duncan.  She is quite pleased with the result and especially with how helpful Mrs. Duncan was.

Before she writes another biograhy in the Enslow series, she plans to finish a novel, probably later this year, which has been in progress for some time.  She has not yet revealed which children's author will be the subject of her next biography.  Information on Campbell and her other writings (mainly articles) and her awards can be found on her  website www.kimberlycampell.net.  Campbell is a member of The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and of The Coweta Writers Group (CWG).

In 2006, I was offered my first book contract by Enslow Publishers to write the biography of Newbery author Richard Peck, for their Authors Teens Love series. I recently finished a second book for Enslow (the biography of Lois Duncan) and it was published this year! Mrs. Duncan was super helpful with the project and I cannot thank her enough.

I've been on a brief writing hiatus, but hope to return to the keyboard soon. Fiction is my first love, so this summer (2009), I hope to focus on finishing a novel-in-progress.

For more info check out his website at www..lefty-music.com.

Centre Strings Concert On May 12

The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County will be the venue for the performance of the Centre Strings Concert on May 12 at 7 PM.  Dr. Lyn Schenbeck will be conducting a program with a great variety of selections, some of them appropriate for the younger performers in the Smoky Road Middle School who will be joining with the Centre Strings for those selections.  The concert is free and very "family-friendly" and enjoyable by children as well as adults.  This is a good concert to introduce children and young people to good music.

The Arts Centre is located at 1523 Lower Fayetteville Road, several miles east of Newnan.  Information is available at 770-254-2787 or by visiting the website at

www.thecentreonline.net.

Lyndsay Wojcik Coming To The Alamo On May 23

The Alamo in Newnan is now becoming known almost as much for the great musicians it is bringing in on Saturday nights as it is for its great pizza.  One of those you can check out soon is Lyndsay Wojcik, who will be there on May 23 at 9:30 PM with her refreshing music which blends roots, folk, and soul.  Although Lyndsay performs in cities she lives in the Appalachian mountains, so she is the real deal.  There is no admission charge.

The Alamo, which is now known as a restaurant providing live entertainment, is one of Newnan's historic buildings which once housed a motion picture theatre.  It is located in the heart of downtown Newnan on the Courthouse Square -- at 19 West Court Square, to be exact.  It is easy to spot because the Marquee is still there!  Information on The Alamo is available by calling 770-683-2526 or by visiting their website www.thealamonewnan.com.
