Coweta Scene Gains New Artist:

Jane Whitehurst Moves to Senoia

Will Have First Show at Dogwood Gallery in February

The bad news is that the Coweta scene lost two visual artists last year when Deborah Landry and Dan Blake moved out of the county.  The good news is that near the end of the year Coweta gained a new visual artist when Jane Whitehurst moved to Senoia.  And she is wasting no time in displaying her works.  She already has a few of her paintings on display at the Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone and she will have her first show there from February 22 through March 1.  The opening reception, where the public can meet her, will be in the evening on the first day of the show (Feb. 22) from 6:30 through 9:30 PM.

The Dogwood Gallery is located in the same building as the Legacy Theatre at 1175 Senoia Road N in Tyrone.  Information is available by calling 770-774-3524 or visiting their website at www.dogwoodgallery.net.

Information on Jane Whitehurst is available on her website www.janewhitehurst.com.

For the past 15 years Whitehurst has produced a variety of different kinds of visual art in various media.  Her specialty is abstract oil paintings.  Her website shows her studio in Senoia and some of her paintings.  The Dogwood Gallery website has a picture of the gallery and also shows the paintings by Whitehurst (and other artists) currently on display there.

85 South Out & About Begins Fourth Year

Magazine Gives Good Coverage of the Coweta Arts Scene

85 South Out & About, a monthly magazine in newspaper format, has just begun its fourth year of covering significant events in the counties located along Interstate 85 as it proceeds south from Atlanta. Good coverage of the Coweta arts scene is provided in the "About Art" section as well as in the "What's Happening" calendar near the back of the magazine. And each issue contains a reprint of one of the newspaper columns written by Lewis Grizzard, who was born and raised in the Coweta city of Moreland, which honors him by a museum there.

The "About Art" section does not just cover art in the narrow sense of the visual arts, but also the performing arts and the literary arts. The current issue (January 2008) provides a good illustrative example of this. Concerning the visual arts, there is information about the Ten Year Retrospective of former East Coweta High School art teacher Richard Scott Hill and the first Coweta show by artist Jane Whitehurst, who recently moved to Senoia. Concerning the performing arts, there is information about the Songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein show coming up at the Legacy Theatre owned by Mark and Bethany Smith of Newnan. And in the Literary Arts there is an item about the Southern Writers Conference to be held in Newnan sponsored by the etreasures publishing company owned by Newnanite Vickie Kennedy.

85 South Out & About is available free of charge at various locations including stores and libraries. Information on this magazine is available on its website www.homestead.com/85south.

Martin Pate To Address February Meeting of NCAA

Coweta artist Martin Pate has been in the news so much recently that it would take too long to even summarize his recent achievements, so we shall look immediately at
the latest of these -- his upcoming address to the Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA) next month on February 21 at 7:30 PM, which has just been announced in the January issue of the NCAA Newsletter.  Information on NCAA is available on their website www.newcaa.com.  Below is the info the newsletter provides about Pate and his art.  Additional info is available on his website www.pateart.com.

Martin Pate graduated from Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida in 1981. His figurative works won acclaim in the Ringling and Sarasota area by such notables as Thornton Utz who declared a life drawing by Martin as the best work in the 1981 student show. His love of figurative works has led to many portrait commissions over the last 26 years by clients throughout the Southeast. Recent portraits of South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges children hung prominently in the Columbia, SC mansion during his term.
Martin's ability to paint people has also led to more than 15 years of commissions by the National Park Service.

Paintings of Native Americans, Civil War battles, The Battle of the Little Bighorn and many others have been used for educational purposes in books, posters and CD ROMs.

Local gallery affiliations include Panoply's Flint Gallery in downtown Newnan and The Dogwood Gallery near Tyrone, GA.

Martin lives with his wife in Newnan. He has a son majoring in computer animation at Ringling and a daughter majoring in architecture at Clemson University.

Newnan-Coweta Art Association Kicks Off 2008 Exhibits

First Opening Reception of Year Thursday night in Newnan

The Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA) will launch their inaugural exhibit of the New Year this Thursday, January 10, at 7:30 p.m., at Espresso Lane in downtown Newnan. The quaint coffee shop is also the Association's official gallery.

"A Brand New Year of Art" is the aptly named theme of the January show. The opening reception is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The New Year brings several changes to the show. NCAA Espresso Lane Gallery Coordinators Dixie Kraft and Janice Shumaker explain, "In addition to our Best in Show and Merchant's Choice Awards, we have added a Second Place ribbon and an award of $25."

There is also a People's Choice award. The artwork receiving the most votes from patrons wins. The winning piece is exhibited for an additional month on a separate wall designated for this award.

Kraft and Shumaker also announced that the duration of each exhibit has been extended to six weeks or slightly longer. In 2008, there will be eight exhibits instead of 12, allowing participating artists more time between exhibits to produce new works.

Planned themes for 2008 NCAA Espresso Lane shows are:  Always In My Heart/February;  Shades Of Spring/March;  Blooming Art/May;  Vacations Of Imagination/July;  Feeling Fallish/August;  Days Growing Short/October;  What a Year We Have Had/November.  Many of these displays also include the option for "Artist's Choice" which means any other off-theme work may be entered.

The Newnan-Coweta Art Association was incorporated June 18, 1968.  Today it is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to encourage and aid artists to produce original works of art of every type and character, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, ceramics, wood craft, drawing and metal crafts; furnish the auspices for the display of such works in Coweta County and elsewhere; foster education and instruction in the creation and appreciation of works of art. The association supports the arts in Coweta schools through annual donations and scholarships to high school students pursuing the arts in college. The Newnan-Coweta Art Association can be found online at www.Newcaa.com.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Richard Scott Hill Mentioned in Wikipedia

Richard Scott Hill Is Mentioned in Wikipedia

By now the word has gotten out about the great accomplishments of Rcihard Scott Hill both as an art educator at East Coweta High School and the plaudits he has received for his paintings, sculpture, and photography.  One important accomplishment by Hill which is often overlooked is his design of the Kessler Campanile which graces the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology.  Here is what Wikipedia says about this great art work:

The Kessler Campanile is an 80-foot tall campanile located at the Georgia Institute of Technology.[1] Designed by artist Richard Hill,[2] it was originally constructed for the 1996 Olympic Games.[3] It is named after Richard Kessler, Tech graduate and former head of Days Inns. It is frequently referred to as "The Campanile" or "The Shaft" (a sometimes tongue-in-cheek reference to student opinion on the school's pedagogical methodology).

Contents

[hide]

[edit] Location

The Kessler Campanile is located near the center of Georgia Tech's campus, in front of its student center and directly down a broad walkway from the recently-styled "Hill District," the campus' historical center. The campanile is surrounded by a 300-seat amphitheater, a gathering place for the Georgia Tech community. It is visible from many areas of central campus.

[edit] Design

The eighty foot tall[4] campanile has the rough appearance of a twisted obelisk, tapering towards the top and capped with a pyramidal piece. It is constructed of 244 stainless steel plates, with each rotated slightly to produce the swirling pattern as height increases.[5] The distinctive peaks intentionally recall the design of Tech Tower, the school's traditional symbol and oldest building. Following its completion, the structure's peak design was incorporated into the university's branding as a new symbol for the school.

[edit] Music

The campanile is able to play several songs, including Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech, the university's fight song through specially designed speakers that reproduce the carillon "chime" sound of bells.[6] After its erection the campanile regularly played music, but it was later silenced in response to student feedback.[citation needed] At times, it has played the Westminster Quarters to mark the passing of time.
As of Fall 2007, the campanile has once again resumed playing the Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech around 10 minutes before the top each hour during the day.[citation needed]

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Jean Westbrook Chosen as Newnan's Artist of the Month

Jean Westbrook Is Newnan's "Artist of the Month"

City of Newnan Public Information Officer Gina Lau Snider has released the following information about the "Artist of the Month", Jean Westbrook, whose paintings are now on display in the reception area of Newnan's City Hall:

Newnan City Hall's 'Artist of the Month' for January 2008

Jean Westbrook is named Newnan-Coweta Art Association's "Artist of the Month" for the month of January 2008. A sampling of her work is on display at City Hall in Newnan. Westbrook is no stranger to this honor. She has been named Artist of the month in the past. We start off 2008 with a veteran artist.

Westbrook has been an active member of the Newnan Coweta Art Association for many years and served on the board of directors. Her paintings have been on display for many locations in Newnan and Peachtree City for several years. While a member of The Society of Decorative Painters, she has enjoyed painting wood, metal, glass and gourds.

Her first love is teaching her art students and passing her gift of art to her students. Westbrook loves painting in general but she most enjoys landscapes, animals, people and still life. Her last accomplishment was to paint her grandparents who have been deceased for almost fifty years. She presented it to her only living uncle who lives in California . The portrait was one she is most proud. Painting is something she feels she will always be a part of her life.

For the second year, a Westbrook painting has been chosen for the Newnan Coweta Art Association yearly calendar which is available during the Christmas show in November each year. Also, two of her art students paintings were chosen for this new year calendar, which made her so proud of them. Classes are held in her home each week. Several of her students have won ribbons at local art shows in Newnan.

The Newnan Coweta Art Association meets the third Thursday of each month from September through May at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 7::00 p.m.
