"Thomas Jefferson" Coming to Arts Centre

The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County provides a venue for many different kind of programs.  And the term "performing arts" is clearly not restricted to music and theatre.  A good example of this will be its upcoming program about Thomas Jefferson.  This is the note about the program found on the website of the Centre, www.thecentreonline.com.  It is clear that this program is for the schools but it is unclear whether the general public is also invited.

An Encounter with Thomas Jefferson April 9th & 10th. Two perofrmances for schools at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Return in time to a spring evening in 1821, and pass an unforgettable and thought-provoking hour in the company of our nations's third president. Playwright and actor, J.D. Sutton brings Thomas Jefferson to life before your eyes, inviting you into the sanctum of his private home at Monticello for an intimate encounter with the man who defined American Independence.

This program has been well received in other educational venues.  Here is what the Orange County Library System said:

Twilight at Monticello
An Encounter with Thomas Jefferson

Return in time to the spring of 1821 and experience an unforgettable and thought-provoking time in the company of our nation's third president. Playwright and actor J.D. Sutton brings Thomas Jefferson to life, inviting you into the sanctum sanctorum of his private cabinet at Monticello for "an intimate encounter with the man who defined American independence."
Set in the twilight of his life, Jefferson speaks of his greatest achievements, his writing of both the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and his founding of the University of Virginia. He also talks of his disappointments, including his repeated failure to bring an end to slavery.
Hear first-hand recollections of the people, events, and ideas which have shaped our country and its ideals, and be stirred by Jefferson's vision of what America's freedom means to those people throughout the world who long for and cherish freedom.
Experience an unforgettable encounter with one of history's most unforgettable men.
t t t
J.D. Sutton was born in Philadelphia and graduated from Temple University with a BA in English and an MFA in Theatre.
As an actor he has enjoyed a professional career ranging from regional theatre to cabaret and dinner theatre productions. He has also appeared locally with the Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival and has worked throughout Florida on a variety of television projects including Tom Hanks HBO series From the Earth to the Moon.
J.D. Sutton brings Thomas Jefferson to the Orlando Public Library thanks to support and funding from the Friends of the Library and the Florida Humanities Council Road Scholars program.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Reception for Landry at Mason Murer on April 6

Reception for Artist Deborah Landry at Mason Murer on April 6

Artist Deborah Landry of Sharpsburg will soon be leaving Coweta County with a BANG -- well, actually THREE BANGS!!  The first BANG will be the display of several of her art works at the prestigious Mason Murer Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta from April 6 through May 5, 2007 as part of the University of West Georgia Atlanta Gallery Project Award Exhibition entitled "Nature, Nostalgia, and Nepotation".  There will be an Artists Reception held on the opening night from 7PM through 10 PM, which is free and open to the public.   The Mason Murer Gallery is located at 199 Armour Drive in Atlanta.  Information about the Gallery is available on its website www.masonmurer.com or by calling 404-879-1500.

The art in Landry's display will be all new work.  Included will be a ceramic installation, engravings, and wooden sculptures.   One of these sculptures, shown here, symbolizes the wanton clear-cutting of trees prior to the building of the typical modern housing development.  The wood in the sculpture was obtained from stumps recovered from a clear-cutting prior to burning.  The houses sitting on the stumps are ceramic. Landry's creativity is apparent in this unique form of protest against the clear-cutting abomination.

The second and third BANGS will be the grand openings of large mural public art works Landry did for Douglasville and Fairburn.  These will be announced as soon as the dates and details have been determined.

Georgia Youth Ballet To Present Lily The Ladybug at Arts Centre

Heroine Lily Performed by Ann Moore of Newnan

There are now so many arts events in the Southern Crescent that it has become a real challenge to get the word out about all of them.  A great step forward in helping to meet this need was the recent creation of the Southside Arts Agenda, a weekly online news service about the Southside scene, which is not only informative but maintains high literary standards as well a  high quality in the photographs used in the various news items it covers.  A good illustrative example of this is to be found in the current issue in its coverage of the upcoming performance of the Georgia Youth Ballet.  Here is what the Agenda says about this important southside arts event:

                               Magdalena Maury's New Ballet
Pictured are the dancers from The Studio, home of Georgia Youth Ballet, who will perform their spring recital, Lily the Ladybug. Clockwise from the top, they are: Pharan Evans of Peachtree City, Mary Frances Skibiel of Brooks, Alyssa Jordan of Fayetteville, and Ann Moore of Newnan.

Magdalena Maury, director of The Studio in Fayetteville and founder of Georgia Youth Ballet, has written and choreographed an original children's ballet. Maury's Lily the Ladybug, will debut on Saturday, April 14 at 2:30 pm at The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts in Coweta County as part of the spring recital of dancers from The Studio.
"Lily" has been a labor of love for Maury for many years. "I first had this idea almost five years ago about a ladybug who was friend to all the insects and animals in her garden, except for a pesky, evil aphid," said Maury. "It has been a tremendous creative challenge writing the story, creating the characters, picking out the music, choreographing new dance numbers, designing costumes with some amazingly talented people, and seeing our wonderful dancers bring the whole thing to life!"
The heroine of the ballet is Lily, performed by Newnan's Emily Moore. Lily is growing up, and one spring she is especially worried about losing her spots, which she thinks will keep her from being able to protect the garden of Lord and Lady Twinkle from the dreaded aphid, Aphonia. With help from her friends Ollie the Owl, Beatrice the Bee, Merrie the Mouse, Fiona the Fairy, Caty the Caterpillar and others, Lily makes a discovery that changes many things for her and the residents of the garden.
"Lily" will be the headline performance at the spring recital for dancers from The Studio. Also on the program will be a Tribute to Broadway featuring several jazz, tap and modern numbers.
Adult tickets are $10 and children ages 12 and under are $5. Tickets are available at The Studio in Fayetteville and at the door the day of the performance. For more information on Georgia Youth Ballet, call The Studio at 770-716-9858 or visit their web site through the link below. www.gyb.us.

Straynotes Return to Hollonville Opry in May

The Straynotes is an old time family gospel and bluegrass band composed of the other musical Jacksons, i.e. Alan Jackson's mother and sisters along with two of their spouses plus David Kinrade, the Minister of Music at the Newnan Methodist Church.  The Straynotes website, www.straynotes.com, says this about the group:

About the Straynotes
The Straynotes band started as strictly a family affair playing for the love of God and the love of music. Although the Jackson sisters have sung along with Mama Ruth for a lifetime, instruments presented a new challenge - trying to play and sing at the same time. Lead guitarist Carol Jackson Glover picked up her first guitar in June of 2000 and began playing duets after Sunday dinner with her husband. Her twin sister Cathy Jackson Wright started playing the bass some 3 months afterwards, followed a few months later by elder sister Diane Jackson Dawson on the mandolin. The family matriarch, Mama Ruth Jackson, handles all percussion for the band. Lamar Wright, husband of bassist Cathy, an accomplished pianist and organist, received the the fiddle to level the playing field. Banks Glover, husband of lead guitarist Carol has played rhythm guitar for some 40 years. David Kinrade brings in the lead fiddle when not playing as the Minister of Music at the local Methodist Church.

The Straynotes perform at different venues, one of their favorites being the Hollonville Opry, where they will return on Saturday evening May 27 at 7:15 PM.  The Hollonville Opry provide an entertaining family atmosphere of Country, Gospel and Bluegrass music from the best bands around.  Information about the Hollonville Opry is available on their website www.Hollonvilleopry.com.

NO RELIEF by Gerald Byrd Purchased by New Coke Museum in Atlanta

Carrollton Artist Launched His Career in Coweta County

Thus far the vitality of the Coweta arts scene has been measured by the great accomplishments of Coweta artist and art organizations and by the great artists who have been attracted to Coweta to display their visual and performing arts at Coweta County venues.  The latest news of which Coweta can be proud does not fit into either of these two categories.  An artist from another county, Gerald Byrd from Carroll County, who launched his career here in Coweta County, last year received recognition of the quality of his art work when one of his pieces was bought by the new Coca Cola Museum which will open in May.

The story began when Alana Ennis discovered the brilliance of Byrd's artistry when she saw his works displayed in Carrollton.  She arranged for Byrd to launch his career in Coweta in two stages:  first,at the Pottery Wheel Art Gallery and Studio (where she worked) in March 2005 and then at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County in April 2005.  Although the attendance at both of these exhibits was low, the right people came because the result was that Byrd's work came to the attention of the art curator at the new Coca-Cola Museum, who purchased the art work NO RELIEF from Byrd last year.  This work will first be put on public display by Coca Cola when the new Museum opens on May 24 at the Pemberton Place in downtown Atlanta.

Information on the New World of Coca Cola Museum is available on its website

GA High Founder R.S. Hill a Finalist in Smithsonian Photography Contest

Some of the greatest triumphs in the burgeoning Coweta County arts scene have been achieved by students in the Georgia High Photography program founded by Richard Scott Hill.  Hill retired from teaching last year but Georgia High continues and his outstanding example as an artist and an educator lives on in the hearts of Cowetans, esp. those he taught at East Coweta High School.

Hill is still active in photography, as is apparent from his latest artistic triumph.  Helen Starkweather, Assistant Editor of the Smithsonian magazine, recently informed Mr. Hill that he is among the top ten finalists in the Americana category of the fourth annual photography contest sponsored by the magazine. There were 8500 entries in this category worldwide.  The Americana category means events, objects or activities connecting the American people to their history or their cultural heritage.
Hill's photograph was of a warm up at the West Georgia Speedway.  It will begin appearing on April 1 on the magazine's website, www.smithsonian.com.    It will also appear along with the photographs of the other finalists in the Summer 2007 issue
of the magazine.

This is not the first time Hill has been a finalist in a national art contest.  His submission for a proposal for a World Trade Center Memorial was a finalist in that contest.  It is shown below but a better picture of it graced the front cover of the Southern Arc fine arts magazine, arts&expressions, which over the years has carried several articles about Hill's art, which, in addition to photography includes sculpture and painting.  Hill was also honored by A Retrospective for all his art in December 2005 at the Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum in LaGrange.  The Museum said this about Hill:
"Richard Hill has been a force in Georgia visual arts for over 25 years.  He taught for many years at the Atlanta College of Art and has for the last few years been head of the Coweta Schools' fine arts programs where his students have won national awards for their photography.  He has completed major public sculpture commissions and won many awards for his work in photography and drawing in numerous national competitions.  This exhibit will present a survey of his work over the last 25 years."
The Southern Arc arts community wishes him continued triumphs in the years ahead!
His latest project is a Savannah commission proposal, which is shown below and on his website, www.hillsculpt.com.

Legacy Theatre Presents  Song and Dance

The newly established Legacy Theatre in Tyrone has been getting rave reviews both for the quality both of the building and of the performances in it.  These results are the fulfillment of the dream of, and the indefagitable labors of, Mark and Bethany Smith of Newnan.  Interesting biographical details and some great photos of the Smiths are found in the current issue (March/April 2007) of the Newnan-Coweta magazine.  And beautiful photos of the building itself can be found by clicking on

The next  item on the Legacy's agenda will be the Southeastern premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance.  Performances will be held from April 13 through May 6.  The theatre only seats 180, so it would be advisable to purchase tickets in advance as soon as possible.  Further information on the theatre and this show and how to purchase tickets is available at http://www.thelegacytheatre.org/home.html.

The Official Andrew Lloyd Webber website provides this information about Song and Dance:

The Song and the Dance...
The album Variations was launched in 1978. Based on Paganini's Caprice in A minor the recording featured Andrew Lloyd Webber's cellist brother Julian and a number of the rock world's leading musicians.
In 1982, this work was combined with Tell Me on a Sunday (an Andrew Lloyd Webber/Don Black song cycle) to produce the musical Song & Dance which opened at the Palace Theatre in London on 26 March 1982 for a run of 781 performances, closing 31 March 1984 . Tell Me on a Sunday was sung by Marti Webb originally and subsequently by, amongst others, Gemma Craven, Carol Nielsson, Lulu and Liz Robertson.

Variations choreographed by Anthony van Laast was danced by an electric team of dancers including Wayne Sleep, Graham Fletcher, Sandy Strallen, Linda Mae Brewer and Jane Darling.

Song & Dance was subsequently presented in Australia , the USA , Germany Switzerland, Austria , Norway and Holland .

In a slightly rewritten form, the show ran on Broadway for over a year to great public response. 1987 saw the worldwide release of a new orchestral version of Variations together with an orchestral tone poem Aurora written by Andrew Lloyd Webber's father.
