[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Southern Writers Conference Organizer Sets Forth Her Hopes

The  Successor  To  Newnan-Coweta  Arts  Council  News  Releases

Southern Writers Conference Organizer Sets Forth Her Hopes

Kennedy Calls For Creation of a Coweta Literary Arts Association

Today the organizer of the Southern Writers Conference (being held in Newnan on July 5)set forth her hopes for what the Conference would accomplish.  This is her statement:

"What I hope to accomplish with this conference, is to put the literary arts on the map in Coweta County.  Christina Barber and I are planning on starting a Coweta Literary Arts Association.  I approached her with the idea of helping me start it, and she's very willing.  We will get together with other people in the writing industry after the conference to make the plans.  This will not only put authors out there, but eTreasures as well.

Far too often, the literary arts are overlooked in this county.  Authors who are published by small companies like mine, are STILL published, although many do not seem to think so because it's not a big, traditional publisher.  I hope to change that misconception.  I want readers to see what wonderful books these authors are writing.  People may ask, "If they are so good, why aren't they accepted by big publishing houses?"  The answer is simple.  Big publishing houses now require authors with an agent.  Agents want authors who have a sales record, or a recommendation by one of their clients.  It's a Catch 22 situation all the way around.  Very few agents are accepting new, unpublished authors.  That's why smaller companies like mine are important.  It gets them published, and gets them a sales record.  True, e-books are harder to sell, but they are selling.  Tony Priest has already sold over 100 copies of his book, Call Sign - 'Iceman' on CD-ROM.  His e-book has been out less than six months.  Others can do the same if they work at it.  Most authors think big publishing houses promote the books they publish.  They do not.  They do less  than I do, as far as promotions go, but I do go one step farther.  Every author published by eTreasures gets three web pages on my site, free of charge.  One is for their photo and short bio, another is for their book description and purchase options, and a third is for reviews of that author's books.  Most publishers give a short description on a page with 10 or more books.  The pages I have offers exclusive coverage for author and book on a page all by itself so there is no distraction from a possible sale.

True, there are publishers online that take anything across the board just to say they have books, offer low royalties, and do nothing to show the book is even available.  The book gets lost in the shuffle.  In doing so, they have very few sales, poor word of mouth references, and no return buyers.  I want readers to enjoy the books they buy so they will come back for more.  I also want that good recommendation by word of mouth.  I can't get that with poorly written, poorly edited books.  I reject quite a few, but I do not use a form letter.  I explain why it was jrejected, possible ways to fix it, and give an invitation to re-write and re-submit.  Because of that, authors do keep trying without feeling quite so "rejected" and disheartened.  Potential buyers can see the book covers right on the page, or they can search by category, or even by author.  They're very easy to find.

My advice is, when deciding on a publisher online, look carefully at their site to see what they offer authors in the way of visibly seeing book cover art, and buy one of their books in the same genre (category) that author writes.  Find out if it's well written, or if you would toss it in the trash.  Then you will know if you want to submit to that publisher or not.  Never submit without knowing the quality of the books they are selling!  Believe me, it does tell on them.  That's why I am very strict on what I accept.

In addition to putting the literary arts and eTreasures up front in the literary community, I want to introduce e-books as a new way to carry books anywhere to read on any computer, with very little bulk.  E-books are just now coming into focus in the world of books.  Book readers are now being introduced worldwide.  People can download up to 250 books on one e-book reader, such as the new Kindle available at Amazon.  If they don't want to invest that kind of money, however, there are still CD-ROMs available, such as those I offer.  E-books are a new futuristic convenience just starting out.  Find out what great books are getting in on the ground floor.

In additon to e-books, I use print on demand type printing, reducing the need for storage space and inventory.  Books are printed as ordered.  The prices are comparable to any big publishing house books, the quality is excellent, and I do all the design and layout in-house.  Several of my authors will be at the conference, offering their books for sale.  I will also have a table with other authors' books, as well as my own, two of which are award winning,  My futuristic time travel suspense is being written for a movie.  People are sure to enjoy this book!  My true crime suspense has been nominated for a movie for LifeTime Television, although has not yet been adapted to screenplay.  My romantic suspense book is based here in Newnan, and gives the reader a taste of recognition, and visitors a taste of a very unique historical town.  Come see what kind of work I produce!

Please note that the conference is not only for eTreasures authors.  It's open to any author that wants to set up for book signings.  Due to limited seating, it's preferred authors and publishers wanting table space pre-register, although there may be some space still available at the door.  Early and Late Registration Deadlines have already passed, but we will take "at the door" registration in advance, no later than July 1, 2008.  After that, there is no guarantee of a space.  Forms are online.

There is no charge for the general public to come in for books in the book signing area.  Fees apply for the workshops.  Sign in and registration will be between 8:30-9:30 AM the day of the conference.  Book signing starts at 11:00 AM and closes at 8:00 PM  Come meet great authors and support their hard work.  We'll be at the Holiday Inn Express on Herring Road, just behind the Toyota Dealer on Hwy. 34.  Turn between the dealership and the Wachovia Bank, just one street west, past the RaceTrac Station.

Hastings Books is helping promote our conference by having flyers at their check out counters!  In addition, Scott's Bookstore has a flyer in their window and a few on their counter.  Expresso Lane, Globe Communications, Kroger, Chervon & Exxon on Hwy. 29 North, at Green Top Rd, all have flyers in prominent locations.  We're very proud to have their support!

Visit eTreasures and see for yourself all the wonderfu, page-turning novels available.  You'll be very glad you did.  www.etreasurespublishing.com

Come join the fun!  Learn just how difficult a task writers have at honing their skills and talent.  It isn't just putting words on a page!  Far from it!

Southside Arts Agenda Continues Great Coverage of Coweta Scene

Installs New Page Viewer System

The Southside Arts Agenda is an online news service covering the arts scenes in the Southside counties.  From its inception a few years ago it has done a commendable job of covering the Coweta arts scene, which is not easy because of all that it going on here.

The Editor's remarks at the beginning of the June 23 issue encourage everyone to see the NCAA Third Annual Juried Art Exhibit at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County.  This is now the last week, so anyone interested had better not delay!  In previous issues many pages have been devoted to this important exhibit.

Page 10 is devoted to the Grantville arts scene -- the left half of the page provides info on the Southern Country Gospel Music Sing coming up this Saturday at the Railroad Freight Depot.  The right half of the page is devoted to Grantville Day (most of which involves the arts) which will be held on the last weekend in September.

The upper half of page 12 shows Trisha Adams, the NCAA Artist of the Month, standing in front of her paintings which are on display this month at the Newnan City Hall.  The bottom half of the page and all of the following page (13) are devoted to the Southern Writers Conference, which will transpire on July 5 at the Holiday Inn Express in Newnan.  This is very significant for being the very first writers conference ever to be held in Newnan.

The current and future shows of the Legacy Theatre are featured on pages 16 and 17.  Although the theatre is located in Fayette County, it is regarded by Cowetans as part of the Coweta scene because the owners, Mark & Bethany Smith live in Newnan.

Several weeks ago a new viewing system (Issuu) was installed by Southside Arts Agenda, which is not easy to use at first but works after you get the hang of it

Information on this important arts news service is available on its website

Summer  Magic  In  Tyrone:

THE  WIZARD  OF  OZ  At  The  Legacy  Theatre

Dustin Lewis, the Legacy Theatre News Wizard, Has Just Announced This:

The Legacy Theatre announces the cast for its summer spectacular…

THE WIZARD OF OZ!

The Wizard of Oz, the most famous movie musical of all time, made its big screen premiere on August 25th, 1939.  This summer, almost 70 years later, this beloved musical is coming to life on The Legacy Theatre stage, and it promises to be its biggest spectacle yet!  With beautiful, Broadway-caliber costumes, a breath-taking set from New York designer Scott Aronow, and a cast that rivals any, you can bet that this show will entertain and astound South Atlanta! The best part…. it is only a short drive to this landmark facility! You can easily join Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow and all of the citizens of Oz for this exciting show, not to mention the magic of Glinda the Good Witch and the mean, green one herself, the Wicked Witch of the West!

Starring as Dorothy, the lovely, bright-eyed girl from Kansas, will be Melissa Vazquez Cartwright. Ms. Cartwright was seen in The Legacy Theatre's very first production "A Christmas Survival Guide" and most recently "It's A Wonderful Life". When not on stage, Melissa can be scene nation-wide as a video DJ on the Gospel Music Channel!

The Tin Man and Glinda the Good Witch will be played by husband and wife team, Don and Shea Johnson. Shea was most recently seen in the Atlanta Lyric's production of "Anything Goes" as the sassy songstress Reno Sweeny and on stage at The Legacy in "Some Enchanted Evening". Don has performed professionally for many years and will be making his Legacy Theatre debut with this production. Don is currently the head of the Fine Arts Department at Landmark Christian School in Fairburn.

Chase Todd, who is quickly making a name for himself in the Atlanta area, will be taking on the role of the Scarecrow. Chase was last seen in the Atlanta Lyric's production of "Forever Plaid" as Jinx. Legacy Theatre audiences might recognize him as Ryan from last summer's smash hit "High School Musical".

Dustin Lewis will play the Cowardly Lion. Dustin has been performing at the Legacy since it's opening in 2006. He was last seen at the theatre in "The Spitfire Grill". He worked all over the world as a professional singer, dancer, actor and choreographer for the past 16 years  before making his home at The Legacy Theatre in South Atlanta.

Bethany Hayes Smith will play the Wicked Witch of the West. She has performed this devilish role before and cannot wait to bring the mean, green one back to life here in South Atlanta! Bethany, along with her husband Mark, who is directing this production, founded The Legacy Theatre.

Area professionals, dancers from the Doris Russell School of Performing Arts, and over 70 children and teens from the Legacy's popular Broadway Workshop complete this extraordinary cast.

This production promises to be the biggest and best the Legacy has brought to their growing audiences!

Three Cowetans To Be Presenters At Southern Writers Conference

Coweta County is very important for the first ever Southern Writers Conference, which will be held on Saturday July 5, 2008.  Not only will the Conference be held in Coweta (at the Holiday Inn Express in Newnan) and not only is the organizer a Cowetan (Vickie Kennedy of Newnan) but three of the Presenters at the Conference are Coweta residents:  Vickie Kennedy and Christina Barber are from Newnan, and Forrest Schultz is from Grantville.

Vickie Kennedy is the founder and director of the etreasures publishing company, which is a co-sponsor of the Southern Writers Conference. Her talk, the opening one, which will run from 10 AM until about 10:30, will explain how electronic publishing works, with especial emphasis on exactly what happens at her own company, etreasures.  Kennedy also runs the Newnan-based Writers Block permanent writing workshop.  She is the author of the EPPIE award winning science fiction story The Hidden Truth of Cytech's Randall 40, a romance novel Strong Arms of The Law, a Newnan-based story called A Writers Dream and A Cowboy's Heart, and she is currently working on a horror story based in Grantville Natalie's Curse

Christina Barber won the 2006 Dream Realm Award for Best Speculative Fiction Romance for her paranormal thriller Greystone.  Recently her urban fantasy work Seely's Pond  and her non-fiction book Spirits of Georgia's Southern Crescent  were published.  Therefore it is not surprising that she will be giving a talk on "Urban Fantasy".  That session will be held from 6:30 PM through 7:15 PM.  Barber's other session, which will last from 10:30 - 11:15 will be a How-To talk on the author's self-promotion.  She is very qualified to do that because she is always busy doing something to sell her books.  Forrest Schultz, the leader of the Coweta Writers Group, has said "She has followed every single suggestion I have given her for promoting her book."

Schultz will be talking about the writing of news releases at his session, which will be held from 1:30 - 2:15.  Although this will be his first speech to writers on this subject, he has already presented this topic twice via the internet to the first and second Muse Online Writers Conferences in 2006 and 2007, and will be doing so again later this year.  Schultz says that there are many very good fictional writers who do not have a clue about how to write a news release!  "This is surprising,"  he says, "because the rules for writing a good news release can be explained in about five minutes.  Actually, my session is really a supplement to Christina's because writing news releases is one of the forms of the author's self-promotion."  Schultz writes the Coweta Arts Tidbits news releases about the Coweta arts scene as well as news releases for the Coweta Writers Group and the Grantville Day Committee.
