Southside Artists Mourn The Passing of Barbara Scruggs

Barbara Scruggs was not only a good artist but also a good organizer.  She strongly supported the Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA) which she served in various capacities including being its delegate to the the Newnan-Coweta Arts Council, where she served for a time as Secretary.  She was also a strong advocate of co-operation among the various Southside art associations for which reason she was very active in the Southern Crescent Alliance of Visual Artists, serving twice as its President (in 2004 and 2007).  Although what happened was tragic, it is perhaps fitting that she died "with her boots on" while helping to organize the reception for the Second Annual Juried Exhibit of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association last week at the Centre for Perforning and Visual Arts of Coweta County.  Barbara will be missed; her passing is a grievous loss for the Coweta and Southside arts scene.

Her Journey's Just Begun

Don't think of her as gone away-
Her journey's just begun.
Life holds so many facets-
this earth is only one.

Just think of her as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of her as living
in the hearts of those she touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost-
and she has loved so much.
-- Ellen Brennerman

Dear Friends

As you have probably heard, our dear friend and active fellow Republican, Barbara Scruggs, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2007.  What a total shock since I had no idea that she had any serious physical problems.  She has been a very good friend of mine for many years, and we e-mailed all the time.  In fact, when she found out that I wanted to be a delegate to the NFRW National Convention in California in September, she nominated me from the floor of the April 2007 GFRW meeting.

Barbara was currently a District Director of the GFRW and Corresponding Secretary of the Coweta County RW. She has been active in the Coweta GOP, the GFRW and in her district for many years.  She has also worked in MANY campaigns for our Republican elected officials including our current and first ever Republican Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Karen Handel, our first Republican Secretary of State.

She passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack Tuesday, June 19, 2007.

"Barb collapsed at THE CENTRE OF PERFORMING ARTS kitchen, as she put her finger food sandwiches on plates for our BIG RECEPTION table.  I had just hugged her not 10 minutes prior as she and I were talking as she arrived, and we were both so excited about the evening, that as it ended up was close to 400 guests attending.  We had all sent out invitations to friends, family, church members, etc.  Barbara herself handled maybe about 100-150 invites to all the dignitaries of Newnan and the County. We will never be able to replace the work she did for us and the Newnan Coweta Art Association, Inc.  We all will certainly miss her and still can't imagine we won't see her at meetings but someday will see her in Heaven.  God was with her to the end, as she was doing what she loved and among all her friends when he called her home."

Eunice E Nichols, President
Newnan Coweta Art Association, Inc

As many of you know, she was a very talented artist, and two of her paintings were on display during the visitation Saturday at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan.

Barbara was a true patriot, and we shall miss her very much. Our prayers go out to her family in their time of grief.

Send your cards to her husband, W. G. (Bill) Scruggs, at 842 Mike Powers Road, Grantville, GA 30220-1640.
