Next Themed NCAA Exhibit Opening Reception on March 26 at Espresso Lane

The Newnan-Coweta Art Association, despite its size, its longevity, and its many high quality art works does not have its own art gallery -- well, not what one normally thinks of as an art gallery, anyway.  Its art gallery is the spacious wall surface inside the Espresso Lane Coffee Shop at 22 West Court Square in downtown Newnan.  This is a great way to get the art out there where the people are, who can come in to see the art when they want without having to worry about art gallery hours, etc.  And they can sit there and chat and sip their coffee while doing so.

From the outset of this great idea, the paintings there have been periodically changed out in accord with a schedule of themed exhibits.  Until recently the theme changed each month.  Now each exhibit lasts a bit longer, approximately 6 or 7 weeks.  Each exhibit is kicked off with an opening reception where one can come and meet the artists whose works will be adorning the walls for the upcoming time frame.

The next exhibit has a somewhat puzzling theme title:  "Seeing Snow" Challenge:  "Dry Medium".  Huhh??  Well, I guess the artists know what it means!  To find out, come to the opening reception, which will be held at Espresso Lane on Thursday March 26 from

7:00 PM until 8:30 PM.

Info on NCAA is available at www.newcaa.com.  By clicking on "Espresso Lane" there one can get info on the upcoming exhibits and the forms needed to be filled out by the artists.  The exhibit co-ordinator can be emailed at elgallery@newcaa.com.  Information on Espresso Lane itself is available at http://expressolanenewnan.com or by calling 770-683-7290.

Wadsworth Concert Set For March 28

For a long time now in Coweta County the most highly anticipated performing arts event of the year has been the "Wadsworth Concert" arranged by Newnan-native and world-renowned classical musician (and Spoleto administrator) Charles Wadsworth, who grew up right next door to the Auditorium which now bears his name in recognition for the great service he has performed through these concerts in promoting the restoration of the building to its original art deco grandeur and in outfitting it with the finest technology.  "The "Wadsworth" is now regarded as one of the premier venues for the performing arts in the area, as was noted last year when it was selected by The Twilight Theatre for the production of Frank Wildhorn's The Civil War  and by VOICES for the performance of its Christmas Mist Concert.

This year's Concert will be especially meaningful for it will also be the celebration of Wadsworth's 80th birthday.  As in the previous concerts the musicians joining Wadsworth on stage are among the finest in the world.  This year there will be five of them:  soprano Courtney Budd, violinist Chee-Yun, flutist Angela Jones-Reus, cellist Edward Aron, and pianist Jeewon Park.  And The Wadsworth Concerts are not only noted for their musical excellence but also for the humorous remarks (and sometimes even antics) which Wadsworth loves to make when he is back home in Newnan.  It is anybody's guess just what he will do about his becoming an octogenarian!

Tickets can either be purchased at the door or at Scott's Bookstore in downtown Newnan, at Morgan Jewelry in Ashley Park and at the Bank of Coweta in Thomas Crossroads.  General seating tickets are $20, and tickets for students and senior citizens are $15.  Because of the special nature of this year's concert it would be advisable to purchase tickets in advance.

[Coweta Arts Tidbits] Southside Arts Agenda Now Publishes Review of Books By Local Authors

Southside Arts Agenda Now Publishes Reviews of Books by Local Authors

The Southside Arts Agenda is a weekly online news service covering the arts in the Southside counties which has now acquired a readership higher than any of the print media.  As such it has played an important role in the burgeoning Southside scene, especially with respect to the visual arts and the performing arts.  Recently the Editor decided that insufficient attention was being paid to the literary arts.  He therefore introduced a new policy of publishing in each weekly issue a review of a recently published book by a Southside author.  And, contrary to what most people probably think, for the past few years there has been a boom in the publication of new books by Southside authors.

The first of these reviews appeared in the February 9 issue about one of the most interesting books I have ever read -- The Melon Boys (by Mike Ottensmeyer of Palmetto, using the pen name Michael George) concerning how they used to pick and pack watermelons in the South in days of yore.  The review published in the February 16 issue was about a book (her first) written by 91 year old Mary Busser of Newnan, who is almost blind but can still recite poetry with super-passion!   The February 23 issue contains a review of a book (Precious) by Georgia's newest author, Sandra Novack, who lives in Whitesburg.  The book reviewed last week (WOOF) was written by Mary Cunningham of the Carrollton Creative Writers Club.  AND, the book reviewed in today's issue  -- Eyes Of The Calusa -- is an award winner written by a former Coweta County Teacher of the Year, Holly Moulder from Sharpsburg.

The Editor, Andre DeLorenzo, is very pleased with these reviews, which have become one of the most popular sections in his publication!  These are bona fide reviews, not just jacket blurbs, and are well written and interesting.  To qualify for inclusion, the book must have been written in either 2007 or 2008 or 2009, and it must be by a Southside author.  The books and authors are being located by means of either a writers group or library in each of the Southside counties.

If anyone has been missed, he should contact me, Forrest Schultz, at 770-583-3258 or by email at schultz_forrest@yahoo.com.

To see the reviews and/or to thank the Editor one can go to www.southsideartsagenda.com.

An announcement was made recently about Voice Lessons at Musicology of Newnan.  Now it has come to light that the teacher of these lessons will be none other than the renowned Maria Pia Ugarte, the Founder of the Zaphyra vocal ensemble and the Director of VOICES, which brought the outstanding Christmas Mist Concert to the Wadsworth Auditorium in Newnan last December.  So, once again we have the opportunity to welcome Ms.Ugarte to Newnan!  Here is the press release Ms. Ugarte has just issued about this great news!

MUSICOLOGY AND THE UGARTE STUDIO

Newnan, March 2, 2009.-  Musicology and The Ugarte Studio are joining to offer lessons in Newnan, starting in March.  Group voices lessons will be offered at Musicology as an Introduction to Voice, starting on March 12 for four weeks.

"I kept receiving requests for voice lessons in Newnan," explained Maria Pia Ugarte, founder of The Ugarte Studio, currently based in Fayetteville and servicing students in that area and in Peachtree City.  "I have known of Doug Kees for quite some time and everybody spoke very highly of him, so I decided to get in touch and see if we could work something out."  After a successful meeting, Musicology and The Ugarte Studio agreed on a joint effort to start offering more services in music education in Newnan.  "We will start with voice group lessons and go from there," said Ugarte.

Musicology was founded by Doug Kees through Doug Kees Music Services in January of 2007 and currently provides music education to hundreds of students in Coweta County.  Doug Kees began professional performances while still in high school in Atlanta.  He continued studying music at Georgia State University where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance.  Since that time, with thousands of performances to his credit, he has performed in concert halls, nightclubs, churches, fraternity houses, recording studios, restaurants, and schools from Seattle to Detroit, from Memphis to Key West and across the Southeast.

The Ugarte Studio was founded in Peachtree City in 1998 by Maria Pia Ugarte, Artistic Director of Voices and founder of the female solo ensemble Zaphyra.  After a two-year sabbatical, The Ugarte Studio reopened last year in Fayetteville.  Ms. Ugarte holds degrees with honors from Peru and New York University, having attended The Juilliard School. It is there where she met world renown conductor, Maestro Vincent La Selva, Founder and Artistic Director of New York Grand Opera.  Since then, she has coached opera under his tutelage.  Ms. Ugarte has performed in South America and The United States, in New York with New York Grand Opera, and in Atlanta with renown American composer Pauline Oliveros.  She can currently be heard with Voices and Zaphyra in The Southern Arc.

Group lessons will be offered as an "Introduction to Voice" starting on March 12 at Musicology.   Classes will meet on Thursdays until April 16, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm, ages 7 -12 years old. Instruction will be provided by Ms. Ugarte in the fundamentals of singing: basics of breath management, posture, vocal and muscle coordination, ear training and pitch recognition. Sessions are one hour long, once weekly, for four weeks.  At the end of the last lesson, a song will be performed jointly by the students for family and friends.  The course fee is $60.00 plus a $5.00 material fee.  No music background is necessary.  Please call Musicology at 770-252-7900 to register or for more information or visit www.MusicologyNewnan.com for contact information.

 Offshoot  Productions' Dr. Steadman Announces:

Coweta Actress Chrisi Talyn Joins New Gallery Players Improv Troupe

Will Be In Murder Off The Cuff Tour (March 22, March 29, April 5)

Dr. Susan Steadman of Offshoot Productions caused quite a stir recently when she announced an intriguing twist to her Gallery Players Improv Troupe where not only the Troupe members but even the audience gets involved in the improvisation!  (Read more below.)  Now she is back in the news again announcing the addition of a brand new member to the Troupe, Coweta actress Chrisi Talyn.  Talyn, from Palmetto, is the second Coweta member who has been admitted to this highly select Fayette-based group.  Last year Joey Waldrop from Senoia was brought on board.  In the photos below Chrisi is dressed in red.

Steadman has this to say for Talyn:  "...she is a highly experienced improviser.  ...she received her theatre degree from Illinois State University and has trained with the Second City in Chicago.  She has spent the last decade in Los Angeles working in various parts of the entertainment industry as well as producing her own improv comedy Sci-Fi webseries called "DIPS" located on the web at www.dipscorp.com. "

Steadman also announced this information about the upcoming troupe tour:

Offshoot's Murder Off the Cuff Tours to Woodstock, Peachtree City, Newnan

The Gallery Players, Offshoot Productions' lively, quick-witted improvisation troupe, will take its new production, Murder Off the Cuff, to the Atlanta Bread Company in Woodstock on March 22, to the Atlanta Bread Company in Peachtree City on March 29, and to Bajas restaurant in Newnan on April 5.

Touring is nothing new for the Fayette County-based professional theatre company, but most of its prior touring has been with participation plays for young audiences, such as last year's Tales from Near and Far. "Now we're touring participation shows for adults, in a way," says producing artistic director Susan M. Steadman, Ph.D. "It's up to the audience to choose the murder weapon, victim, detectives and much more. Our experienced improv actors take the suggestions and run with them."

The Sunday, March 22 performance at the Atlanta Bread Company in Woodstock (180 Woodstock Square Avenue, in the Target /Kohl's shopping center) begins at 7:30 p.m. The restaurant's phone number is (678) 445-2794.

A week later, on Sunday, March 29, the company performs closer to home at Peachtree City's Atlanta Bread Company in The Avenue, at the intersection of GA Hwy 74 and GA Hwy 54. The restaurant's phone number (770) 486-1330. Curtain is 7:30 p.m.
For each of the Atlanta Bread locations, tickets are $10, and may be purchased at the restaurant, online with a credit card at www.offshoot.org , or by mail with checks made out to Offshoot Productions and mailed to P.O. Box 2462, Peachtree City, GA 30269. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at both restaurants.

On Sunday, April 5, Murder Off the Cuff takes stage at 7:00 p.m. at Bajas, 385 Jackson St. in Newnan. Admission to this informal dinner theatre event is $20 and includes the meal and beverage. Tickets may be picked up at the Bajas, charged by phone at (770) 683-3474, or paid by checks made out to Offshoot Productions and mailed to P.O. Box 2462, Peachtree City, GA 30269.

Twenty Members Join To Form Coweta Christian Writers Group

Next Meetings Set For March 7 & April 6

On February 19 twenty people gathered at the Coweta Community Church in Newnan to form the Coweta Christian Writers Group.  The organizer, Linda Jennings, was pleased with the turnout.  She also announced that the next two meetings of the group are scheduled for Saturday March 7 at 9 AM and Monday April 6 at 7 PM, both to be held at the same place, Coweta Community Church, which is located at 310 Millard Farmers Industrial Boulevard in Newnan.  Anyone interested in the group can contact her at

770-304-0282 or by e-mail at lajennings@charter.net.

The formation of this special writers group is the latest indication of the burgeoning Coweta literary scene in which for the past three years Coweta authors have been getting books published at the rate of slightly over one per month!  As the number of Coweta's published authors grows, it will become ever more feasible for special writers groups like this to be formed.

New Coweta County Christian Writers Group To Meet on Feb. 19

The members of the Coweta Writers Group were recently informed that there are now so many published book authors in Coweta that we will probably soon see the formation of special groups of writers.  They were also informed that two Coweta Writers Group member -- Swanee Ballman and Linda Jennings -- had already formulated a plan to establish an organization for christian writers.  The prelimary meeting for this new group was held earlier this month and the next meeting, which will be the first official one, will be held on Thursday.  Here is the annoncement which had just been released by Linda Jennings:

This is just a reminder that a Christian writer's group is forming in Coweta County . Our first official meeting will be this Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. at Coweta Community Church (Farmers Industrial Blvd.).

We will eventually separate into two groups:

           1) .  Those who have written, are in the process of writing, or want to write books

2).    Those who have written, are in the process of writing, or want to write scripts for movies, television & radio.

We now have both a Christian publisher and marketer living in our county.  Terribly exciting!

All writing must be either Christian or family friendly.

Hope to see you there.  Call (770-304-0282) or E-mail lajennings@charter.net for any questions.

Note:  Pastors, will you please forward this to your congregations?  Most every congregation has folks in them who want to write, but they simply don't know where to begin.  This will be a great starting place.  Thanks!

Blessings to all,

Linda Jennings
