New Children's Author Holly Moulder Coming to CABSE

 

     There have been so many books published by Coweta authors that it is becoming difficult to keep up with all of them!  The Co-ordinator of the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE), who has the job of inviting all Coweta authors of a published book to attend, has just discovered another one, first time author Holly Moulder of Sharpsburg.  Moulder, a former teacher at White Oak Elementary School, quit teaching in order to write a delightful book for children, Eyes of the Calusa.

 

    There will be 21 Coweta writers participating in the CABSE, which will give the public an opportunity to meet them, talk with them about their writing, and acquire an autographed copy of their books.  The CABSE will be a special feature of the New Grantville Days Festival, which will be held the third weekend of September.  The hours of the CABSE are 10 AM thru 5 PM on Saturday September 15 and 12 Noon thru 5 PM on Sunday September 16.  Info on the CABSE is available from Forrest Schultz at 770-583-3258 or schultz_forrest@yahoo.com.  Info on the New Grantville Days Festival, formerly called Grantville Day, is available at http://grantvilleday.tripod.com.

   Book News from White Pelican Press!           

 

White Pelican Press announces the February 2007 release of "Eyes of the Calusa" by Sharpsburg resident and former Coweta County teacher Holly Moulder.  This innovative work of historical fiction is written for middle grade readers, and can be read for individual enjoyment or used for classroom instruction.  Mrs. Moulder has designed a classroom guide based on the new Georgia Performance Standards to make her novel very teacher friendly.

 

Meticulously researched and creatively written, the story provides a fresh perspective into the lives and events of the opening years of the 18^th century.  The story begins in 1720 on the Golden Coast of Southwest Florida where fierce Calusa Indians ruled their mighty empire.  Pirates patrolled the area, looking for Indians to capture and sell in the slave auctions of Charles Town, S.C.

 

One evening as the Calusa girl Mara, and her little sister search the shoreline for a lost toy, pirates come ashore seeking human treasure.  Mara is kidnapped and dragged aboard Captain Hannah Dunne's pirate frigate, The Devil Ray.  In the months that follow, Mara's journey takes her far from her Calusa home to the slave quarters of an indigo plantation in the lowlands of South Carolina.  Along the way, Mara uses the ancient powers of the Calusas to calm a terrible storm at sea.  She is taken to a pirate hideout where she learns about the infamous Blackbeard.  Later on the plantation, she uncovers secret plans for a slave rebellion and is forced to make desperate choices. Finally, Mara makes the most important discovery of all:  the value of her own freedom.

 

Mrs. Moulder will be conducting book signings at locales throughout the area.  She is scheduled to make multi-media presentations about her novel and the writing process at elementary schools in Coweta County and in Florida.

Legacy Theatre Announces 2007 - 2008 Season

 

     Well, it looks like Mark and Bethany Smith of Newnan have scheduled a lot of work for themselves in another busy season at their Legacy Theatre in Tyrone.  It would be advisable for anyone planning to attend any of these performances to make their decisions soon and be sure to purchase tickets well in advance if this year's season will be anything like last year's when shows were sold out  way ahead of time.  Here is the schedule for the upcoming season provided by the Southside Arts Agenda

The hilarious comedy about Texas' third smallest town, where the Lion's Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies.  The eclectic band of citizens that make up this town are portrayed by only two performers, making the satire on life in rural America even more delightful as they depict all of the inhabitants of Tuna-men, women, children and animals.  Sept. 21-Oct. 14

 

This beloved American holiday classic comes to captivating life as a live 1940's radio broadcast.  With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve.  Nov. 23-Dec. 16

 

More so than any composer and lyricist who have written for the stage, the songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein have become an integral part of our everyday lives.  This stunning collection of compositions places five performers in a theatrical setting, offering the audience a glorious parade of genuine hits.  Jan. 25-February 17

 

A feisty parolee follows her dreams to a small town in Wisconsin and finds a place for herself working at Hannah's Spitfire Grill. 

"An abundance of warmth, spirit and goodwill! Some of the most engaging and instantly infections melodies heard in an original musical in some time."  USA Today April 18-May 11

 

Arnold Lobel's well-loved characters hop from page to the stage in this new musical that remains true to the spirit of the original stories as it follows two great friends, the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons.  A score that bubbles with melody and wit, it's jazzy upbeat sound is a perfect match for the hopping, crawling and flying denizens that inhabit Frog and Toad's world.  June 26-July 13 (Thursdays-Sunday)

Benefit Concert At Legacy Theatre

 

     The Legacy Theatre, which usually puts on its own shows, will be the venue for a benefit concert next month.  The online news service for the Southern Arc, the

VOICES proudly announces the 2007 Voices Benefit Concert titled Canto all'una Terra (Song to One World) featuring more than 100 talented local citizens coming together to celebrate the earth and its beauty through song. The concert will be performed at the Legacy Theatre in Tyrone, on September 15.

  

Named after the title of its first performances,VOICES will be presenting their 2nd annual concert of inspirational music. Through the wonders of the earth, we are called to share as one, regardless of our roots. This years event covers an eclectic collection of music; with hits like "Dust in the Wind", "What a Wonderful World" and "Colors of the Wind;" 

 

Latin American beloved pieces made famous by Mercedes Sosa; "Any Dream Will Do" from Andre Lloyd Webber; contemporary inspirational music in Selah's style; Andre Bocelli's classical crossover favorites and other everlasting classicals like "Meditation" from Massenet's "Thais". VOICES will also premier a piece by composer Bob Smith titled "24 Hours" and will be introducing the newly formed trio "Zaphira."

 

This event is bringing together an amazing pool of local talent of all ages, styles, and walks of life.  Artistic Director Maria Pia Ugarte and Music Director Claire Stroud have fused moving selections with gifted talent with featured soloists; Alison Chambers, Soprano & Vocalist, Michael Fleisch, Vocalist; Joyce Gruschow, Vocalist, Beatriz Martinez, Vocalist; Rick Massengale, Tenor; Paige McCauley, Girl Soprano & Vocalist  Bill Nelmes, Vocalist; Matthew Roberts, Violin; Christopher Stroud, Classical Guitar; Maria Pia Ugarte, Soprano & Vocalist.

 

The Latin American Ensemble (Beatriz Martinez, Daniel Garcia, Efrain Loera, and Oscar Galvez) will perform as will the St. John's Dance Group, directed by Elisa Yates, and the Voices Orchestra and Band (Bethany Abresch, Michael Fleisch, Rick Massengale, Bill Nelmes, Matthew Roberts, and Claire Stroud) with the special participation of the Peachtree Wind Ensemble prepared by Mike Landry.  Music direction is shared this year by Claire Stroud and Rick Massengale.

 

The Voices Youth Ensemble, directed by Jacqueline Bustin, includes Alexa Moreira, Kelley Utt, Amanda Buzzeo, Maddie Corley, Sandra Destadio, Sebastian Doreste, Regan Grillo, Anna Haas, Olivia Haas, Mallory Hu, Paige McCauley, Abby Mortensen, Shannon Wade, Crystal Warner, and Michelle Yarmolinsky.

Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats Coming to Arts Centre on Sept. 9

 

     The world famous Chinese Golden Acrobats are soon to embark on a tour of the USA.  They will only be performing at two venues in Georgia:  one in Columbus and the other at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County in Lower Fayetteville Road east of Newnan, which Cowetans call "The Arts Centre".  Our hats are off once again to Don Nixon for bringing yet another great show to the Centre as the latest example of the ever growing renaissance of the Southside.  The online news service the Southside Arts Agenda provides this information about this important show:

Free Army Band Concert Returns to Arts Centre

 

     The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County on Lower Fayettevelle Road has been presenting a great variety of first rate programs, and some of them are even free of charge!  One example is the Army Band Concert, back by popular demand, which is described as follows on the Centre's website:

    

 

September 6^th - Army Ground Forces Band in Concert 7:00 p.m.- FREE Concert-The Army Ground Forces Band serves as an outreach asset for United States Army Forces Command, headquartered at FortMcPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. The 58 Soldiers assigned to the Band have passed a highly selective audition, and are among the finest musicians in the United States Army Band Program. The majority of the Band's members have studied music at some of the finest universities and conservatories in the United States and abroad
The Army Ground Forces Band performs numerous concerts in support of local, regional, and national events, such as centennial celebrations, festivals, inaugurations, and both city and state commemorations. The Band's various ensembles frequently travel throughout the country, performing several concert tours each year. In addition to its outreach mission, the Band also serves as the primary ceremonial unit on FortMcPherson, supporting numerous military ceremonies, and performing for visiting American and foreign dignitaries throughout the year.

Five Coweta Photographers Have Entries In Slow Exposures: 

 

Paul Conlan, Gary Gruby, Deborah Smith, Jeremy Harwell, and Daniel Piar

 

 

     Photographic artists from Coweta County have been receiving great honors from the Slow Exposures Photographic Exhbition of the Rural South, which is becoming ever more widely regarded as one of the nation's premier exhibitions of photographic art.  The Grand Prize for the past two years has been won by Cowetans -- in 2005 by Paul Conlan of Newnan, and in 2006 by Gary Gruby of Senoia.  Conlan has also been very highly honored by being invited to be on the Board which runs the Exhibition and by being named the Webmaster of their website, www.slowexposures.org.  To appreciate the greatness of this honor one needs to realize that the Exhibition is run by residents of Pike County:  where Cotton once was King there, Slow Exposures is now their reigning Monarch, and everything about it is "fit for a king", such as royally high standards for admission to the exhbition and the very best Jurors who can be found.  So, for someone outside of Pike County to be given these privileges is an extremely high honor.

 

      This year there were over 600 photographs submitted with only 81 of these accepted into the Exhibition by the Jurors.  Five residents of Coweta County were among those with photographs accepted.  These are:  Paul Conlan of Newnan, Gary Gruby of Senoia, Deborah Smith of Grantville, and Daniel Piar of Senoia.

The SlowExposures photo-exhibition has become anything but slow as it already has passed its toddler years and stands tall at 4 years old. Organized by a savvy group of sourthern dolls to put preservation of cultural style and life back on the map when Google-Earth promotes another message about being "close to home". The competition is strengthened by a mix of amateur and professional photographers whose visions of southern life show diversity of interest that range from sweet smelling landscapes to mysterious deserted architectural gems; home life is often outdoor ife and captures individual charachters' faces and gestures of southern charm or depict the latest family feud. SlowExposures is an opportunity that presents photographing the South can be more than "makin' perty pictures" but a quest of discovering who and what we really are, and sometimes what we were.

 

SlowExposures, the nationally recognized photography exhibition that underscores the diversity, contradictions and complexity of the rural South, opens Friday, September 21, 2007, for two weekends in the picturesque town of Concord, Georgia. The fifth anniversary of the photography showcase will be held in the historic 1887 R.F. Strickland Building, a late nineteenth century mercantile store listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Pike County, fifty miles south of Atlanta.

 

SlowExposures opens on Friday, September 21, followed by a benefit gala dinner/dance/auction on September 22. The six-day exhibit continues on September 23, 28, 29 and 30, with a BBQ picnic on Saturday, September 29, hosted by the Pike County Arts Council. The second weekend of SlowExposures recognizes "Kids with Cameras" with a children's exhibit and reception and salutes young people's interest in photography.

LIFEstyles Features Art of Gerald Byrd

 

     How may artists do you know who have an art work in the Coke Museum in Atlanta??  Remember now we are talking about an art work on PERMANENT display, one owned by the Museum -- we are not talking about a show at a gallery that will be over in a month or so.  Well, I know one, and his name is Gerald Byrd and the art work is entitled NO RELIEF.   You can see this art work and read about Byrd and his art in the latest (August 2007) issue of LIFEstyles magazine (pages 30 - 32). 

 

     One thing the article omits is the role which Cowetans played in launching Byrd's career.  The story begins with Alana Ennis who "discovered" Byrd and talked him into launching his career in Coweta, first at her Pottery Wheel in Newnan and then later at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County.  The attendance at both of these was sparse but the word got out to the right people, one of whom contacted Byrd to purchase one of his art works for the new Coke Museum.

 Kay Moore Displays Art By Her Students at Stained Glass Worskshop

 

     Kay Moore of Newnan, who is the one referred to as "Sookie" in Sookie's Glass Art Studio, has recently created a blog on which her latest entry shows the art works of her students at the recently concluded Stained Glass Workshop sponsored by Images Art Gallery and Studio on Main Street in Moreland.

 

     One of these students is the well-known jewelry craftsman from Sharpsburg, Mary Beth Hile, two of whose art works are shown.  The other one is simply called "Ron", whose identity is not further indicated.  There have been many news releases and articles about these and other art workshops but there usually is no follow up showing exactly what the students did.  So, Sookie is to be commended for this.  Maybe other art teachers at these workshops will do likewise in the future.

THE GRASSROOTS ARTS PROGRAM

 

What is the Grassroots Arts Program?  The Grassroots Arts Program (GAP) is funded by the Georgia Council for the Arts through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly to make sure that all Georgians have access to the arts activities which enrich all of our lives.  Arts Clayton has once again been named by the Georgia Council for the Arts as the FY 2008 re-granting agency for GAP in Clayton, Fayette, Henry and Spalding Counties , and is very pleased to announce that Coweta County has been added to our re-granting area for FY 2008.

 

The idea behind GAP funding is to help smaller, "emerging" groups get off the ground – to "fill in the gap" between start-up and when an organization is ready to apply directly for larger funding to agencies such as the Georgia Council for the Arts, OR become self-sustaining through admissions and/or other resources.  Ideally, Grassroots Arts Projects will create new opportunities for citizens to experience the arts, while fostering greater awareness and developing local partnerships in the arts.  Examples of projects eligible for funding include: visual arts exhibits, concerts, readings, theater and dance performances, film programs, folk art projects, storytelling, workshops, and art festivals.  Projects combining arts and education are encouraged. 

 

This statewide arts program is designed to encourage local collaborations between artists, arts organizations, and non-arts organizations, in order to serve a broad range of Georgia 's residents.  Every Georgia County receives an equal per-capita allocation.  Funding is open to any non-profit 50l(c)(3) tax exempt organization or unit of local government.  Civic clubs, churches, theatre groups, arts festivals, Boys & Girls clubs, libraries, senior citizens' centers, Parks & Recreation Departments also may be eligible to apply! 

 

            There is plenty of time to apply for the GRASSROOTS ART PROGRAM (GAP) grants.  Forms and granting guidelines are available on line at www.artsclayton.org, by email request to artline@artsclayton.org or by calling Arts Clayton at 770-473-5775.  The deadline for submitting completed applications is October 1, 2007 at 4 p.m.

 

            Four GAP application workshops will be offered by reservation/appointment, at the Arts Clayton Gallery located at 136 S. Main Street in Downtown Jonesboro.  Available times and dates are: Saturday, September 8 at 10am; Monday, September 10 at 10 am and 6 pm; and Wednesday, September 12 at 2pm.  Please call Sara Cookson at 770-473-5775 to reserve a date and time to attend one of these sessions.  Applicants should obtain application forms and funding guidelines prior to attending, and should bring their rough draft applications with them.  The purpose of the workshops is to demystify the grant-writing process for potential applicants.  All applicants (especially new) are encouraged to attend.

Motorcycles at the New Grantville Days Festival

 

Bike Ride and Bike Raffle To Be Held on September 15

 

     Motorcycles will play two important roles at the New Grantville Days Festival, which this year will be held on the balmy third weekend of September instead of the traditional super-hot second weekend of June, when it was known as Grantville Day. 

 

     First, there will be a one-hour Ride Around Grantville led by biker enthusiast B.J. Thompson, who is a member of the festival's planning committee.  This Bike Ride will begin at 4 PM on Saturday September 15 on Main Street in front of the former Railroad Freight Depot.  The $15 entry fee may be paid at that time or ahead of time by contacting BJ at 678-643-0013 or when you see him hanging around the Grantville Veterans Office on Main Street. 

 

     Second, there will be a Bike Raffle.  Each participant in the Bike Ride will receive a free raffle ticket.  The rest of the tickets will be sold for $5 each.  The prize awarded to the raffle winner will be the Panther 49 cc Mini Bike on display in the Grantville Veterans Association office on Main Street.   The money raised by the Ride and Raffle will be put into the fund for the construction of the Grantville Veterans Memorial.

GWTW Expert Herb Bridges Coming to CABSE

 

     There are so many interesting things about Coweta County that it would take a whole book to discuss all of them.  One category of interesting things is all of the Cowetans who have accomplished great things.  One of these is Mr. Herb Bridges of Sharpsburg, who is one of the world's top authorities on Gone With The Wind as well as on of the greatest GWTW memorabilia collectors of all time.  And he accomplished all of this not as some kind of professional but as a hobbyist.  Several years ago most of his memorabilia was sold for several million dollars by none other than the famous Christie's auction in New York City.  Bridges has not only spoken and been interviewed numerous times throughout his lifetime but he has also written several books on his favorite movie.  Bridges is also interested in the history of his favorite county -- Coweta -- and has also written several books on that subject.

Black Warriors Curse Author Joe Harless Coming to CABSE

 

     Until two years ago Joe Harless of Newnan was known as the founder of the Harless Performance Guild job training company and as an educational theorist who set forth his principles in The Eden Conspiracy.  In 2005 in the conclusion of his speech to the Coweta Writers Group, he dropped a bombshell -- he had written a novel Black Warriors Curse, which was published soon afterward.  Then this year there was the dramatic announcement in Variety that the film rights had been purchased by a Hollywood motion picture company.  The story is based on the lore about the Indian tribe near where Harless grew up in Alabama.  So now Harless is equally known -- or maybe even better known -- as the novelist who wrote this fascinating story.

 

     There will be an opporunity to meet Harless and acquire an autographed copies of his books at the first ever Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE) next month to which all Coweta County authors of a published book have been invited.  There are twenty so far who have agreed to come with the total expected to be about 22.  The CABSE will be held during these time periods:  Saturday September 15 from 10 AM through 5 PM and Sunday September 16 from 12 Noon through 5 PM.  The CABSE will be a special feature of this year's New Grantville Days Festival, which is held on Main  Street in Grantville, a small city in southern Coweta County at Exit 35 on I-85.  Information on Grantville Day, the original name of this festival, is available on their website at http://grantvilleday.tripod,com.  Info on the CABSE is available from its Co-ordinator, Forrest Schultz at 770-583-3258 or schultz_forrest@yahoo.com.

Coweta Novelist Christina Barbara Wins 2006 Dream Realm Award

 

          Christina Barber of Newnan is a very excited woman right now:  she has just learned that her paranormal-supense/romance novel Greystone
