Emily Moore of Newnan With GA Youth Ballet at National Dance Festival

By now just about everyone knows of the great accomplishements of The Georgia Youth Ballet and the wonderful opportunities it provides to talented Southside youth. One of these is Emily Moore of Newnan. The latest GYB triumph occurred at a national dance festival held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A great article about this along with an excellent appropriate photograph showing the dancers on a bridge over the Monongahela River was provided in last weeks' Southside Arts Agenda:

Dancers from Georgia Youth Ballet just returned from performing at the Regional Dance America (RDA) National Festival in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This year's event was only the second national festival in RDA's 50-year history. Emily Moore of Newnan, Brittany Eubanks of Lithia Springs, Jordan Smith of Peachtree City, Olivia Boyd of Warner Robins, Hannah Skibiel of Brooks and Kara Cawley of Gay represented GYB during the week-long festival.

After a rigorous adjudication process this spring, GYB was selected to perform Apolysis for the national audience. Apolysis is a new ballet choreographed specifically for Georgia Youth Ballet by Kristy Nilsson.

In addition to performing, GYB's dancers took master classes in ballet, jazz, modern, and musical theatre taught by world-renown instructors such as Laura Alonso, Leslie Crockett, Marianna Tcherkassky, and others.

RDA represents five regional ballet associations. GYB is a member of the Southeast Regional Ballet Association (SERBA). GYB's dancers joined an estimated 1,300 other dancers from around the country for the event the last week of April.

"It was quite an honor to perform at the national festival," said GYB founder and co-artistic director Magdalena Maury. "I'm so glad our dancers performed so well for a national audience. It was a tremendous learning opportunity."

Coweta Writers Group Re-activates With Meeting on July 12

Meetings Will Stress Critiquing

After a great deal of thought, discussions, and updates in its membership list, the Coweta Writers Group (CWG) is now back in business. Henceforth the monthly meetings will stress critiquing -- members will critique each other's writings during these meetings. Any member wishing to have his writing critiqued will email it out to the rest by means of the

CWG email discussion group at least a week prior to the meeting. At the meeting he will bring about a dozen hard copies of the writing to distribute to those in attendance. Although there have been doubts about this, it is believed that if there is maturity and mutual concern on the part of both the critiquers and the critiquees that helpful critiques can be given, The rest of the time during the meetings will be devoted to informal discussions among the members about any questions or comments regarding anything pertaining to writing.

Occasionally a speaker will be brought in.

The first meeting of the re-activated Coweta Writers Group will be held at 7 PM on Thursday July 12 in the Conference Room of the Newnan-Coweta Public Library on Hospital Road in Newnan. Anyone interested in writing is welcome to attend. The meeting is expected to last until about 8:30. It is expected that henceforth meetings will be held monthly.

The Coweta Writers Group is open to any writer or aspiring writer living in or near Coweta County. There are currently about 40 members. Anyone interested in information about the CWG can contact Forrest Schultz at 770-583-3258 or by email at schultz_forrest@yahoo.com.

Newnan Author Christina Barber Coming to CABSE

I do not know of any other author around here who devotes more time and effort to speaking appearances and book signings than Christina Barber of Newnan. Anyone who doubts this can visit her website www.christinabarber.net and look at her scheduled appearances. One of these last year was a very major one -- Dragon Con in Atlanta, the largest Science Fiction Convention in the world! Therefore it is not suprising that she intends to be present at the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza (CABSE) on September 15 and 16. All Coweta authors of a published book are being invited and so far 17, including Barber, have agreed to be there. The Signing will begin at 10 AM on Saturday Sepember 15 and last until 5 PM and then will resume the next day Sunday September 16 at 12 Noon and last until 5 PM. The authors will be seated behind name plates at a long row of tables. The public will be given ample opportunity to meet the authors and acquire autographed copies of their books.

Marilyn Haas has found a great way of celebrating her fifth year of serving as a voice for the Southside Arts Scene through her beautiful magazine arts&expressions. The just published current issue, Summer 2007, on its cover and on pages 8 thru 10, features one of the Southside's greatest artists, Richard Scott Hill, by showing us various photomontage creations by Hill which are now being displayed as part of the Revisiting the Past Exhibit at the prestigious Naomi Silva Gallery at the TULA Art Center in downtown Atlanta. STAR Performances Announced by Arts Centre

It would be rather tedious to explain exactly what is meant by the Superintendent Theatre Arts Resource (STAR) Program, but it is very easy to describe the result -- excellent performances of plays!! The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County will be presenting two STAR shows in July -- one at the Arts Centre itself and the other at Dunaway Gardens.

Dunaway Gardens is one of the jewels of the Coweta arts scene -- the result of a vision imagined many years ago by Hetty Jane Dunaway and restored several years ago by Jennifer Rae Bigham. These beautiful gardens are located several miles north of Newnan after after a nice drive through the country on Roscoe Road. It would be a good idea to arrive early to allow some time to walk around and enjoy the sights before the show. The STAR show at Dunaway Gardens will be presented in its outdoor amphitheatre. (In case of inclement weather, the performance will be moved to the Arts Centre.) The show is Thornton Wilder's famous play Our Town. Performances will be at 7 PM each evening on July 11, 12, & 13. The show at the Arts Centre will be Music by Stephen Sondheim based on the book by James Lapine Into The Woods. It would be a good idea to attive plenty early in order to have the time to enjoy the beauty of the magnificent hallways of the Arts Centre and to look at the paintings which will be displayed there belonging to the Second Annual Juried Exhibit of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association. The Arts Centre is located at 1523 Lower Fayetteville Road several miles east of Newnan. Due to a bureacratic snafu the monthly Grantville Depot Southern Country Gospel Sings for May cannot be held in the Railroad Freight Depot. Consequently the co-ordinator of these Sings had to look for a new location. This location is the Corinth Baptist Church on Hwy. 100 in Corinth, GA. Both the Friday night and Saturday night Sings will be held there. These are the musicians who will be performing:

Jinm Gilbert to Autograph Books at CABSE

CABSE ?? That is the newest kid on the Coweta arts block -- the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza, to which all Coweta County authors of a published book are being invited. Thus far seventeen of them have agreed to be there to sign copies of their books and to talk with anyone interested in their writings. (The total is expected to rise to about 20.)

One of these writers is Jim Gilbert, a long time member of the Newnan-based Writers Block where he was helped in getting his books written and published. His first novel was a humorous paranormal story entitled A Host of Ghosts, which won the 2001 Dream Realm Award for the best speculative fiction. His latest novel is an international suspense story The Oncde and Future Nowwhich has received good reviews. Both of these have been published by the Newnan-based etreasures publishing company.
