Coweta Arts Scene in September Perspectives Magazine:
Janet Baggarley, Todd Key, Gary Gruby and Veranda Inn Art Gallery
The burgeoning Coweta County arts scene is gaining ever more recognition. A good example of this is found in the September issue of Perspectives magazine which is devoted to articles about art, entertainment, and uplifting stories.
Coweta County is not only creating a lot of new visual and performing and literary arts, it also includes people concerned about its history. One such person is Janet Baggarley from Senoia, whose efforts thru her Buggy Shop are discussed in the feature article "Local Woman Preserves History" found on page 9.
Surprisingly few people from Coweta County are aware of one of our nation's greatest entertainers -- comedic juggler Todd Key from Grantville. Our armed forces, though, are well aware of him because over the past several years he has provided entertainment for them under the auspices of the USO. You can read about it in the article "Georgia Juggler Entertains Troops" on pages 26 & 27.
Photographer Gary Gruby is best known for his striking photos of people and places in Senoia. The feature article about him on pages 38-40 is appropriately entitled "Gary Gruby a portrait of Senoia". One of these photos is found on the notice for this year's SlowExposures exhibition, an ad for which is found on page 2. (The story behind SlowExposures is found in an article on pages 12-14.)
A news clip "Veranda Inn Art Gallery Opens in Senoia" is found on page 61 along with a photo of the three artists whose works were exhibited in its first show.

2008 Theme: The Rural South - Real and Imagined
September 19, 20 and 21 & September 26, 27 and 28, 2008 Concord, Pike County , Georgia
SlowExposures, the nationally recognized photography exhibition that faithfully captures the theme of the rural South's history and character, opens this Friday, September 19th, 2008 for two weekends in the picturesque town of Concord , Georgia.
More than 120 photographers from 14 states submitted over 600 photos for consideration. From these, nationally recognized jurors chose 71 images from 47 artists through a "blind" selection process. The photos capture the rich romance and sweeping vistas of South in color and black and white.
The show includes photographs by four Coweta County artists: Anne Berry and Paul Conlan of Newnan, Gary Gruby of Senoia, and Daniel Piar of Sharpsburg.
"This year's SlowExposures photographs have come of age. Each image is a special look at our heritage with a fresh insight and new perspective," says Chris Curry, Director of the photography exhibit. "We are very pleased with the artwork and think that the public that views these images will come away with a renewed vision of their birthright."
The sixth anniversary of this free photography showcase will be held in the historic 1887 R.F. Strickland Building, a late nineteenth century mercantile store listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Pike County, south of Atlanta.
Located just 40 minutes from Newnan, SlowExposures attracts thousands of visitors each year who visit bucolic Pike County to view and purchase original and innovative works from photographers from all over the United States .
SlowExposures is the annual fundraiser of Pike Historic Preservation and is dedicated to supporting the historical and cultural heritage of the rural south through contemporary photography. All proceeds from the show and the dinner/dance go to the preservation of Pike County 's historic buildings and landscapes.

Strolling and Dining With The Dead in "Street Theatre" in Newnan

If you have any doubts, read this official news release by Shelley Laurin on behalf of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society: Spirits Cast for Stroll and Dinner With the Dead Casting for the roles of spirit guides and dearly departed dinner guests is nearly complete as the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society prepares for two of its most eagerly anticipated Halloween events–The Spirit Stroll and Dinner With the Dead. Historically costumed spirit guides for the upcoming Spirit Stroll will include Elizabeth Beers, Carol Healy, Debbie Rogers, Joan Crawford, and Louise Collins. This cadre of spooky storytellers will lead their guests through the College-Temple historic district at 7 and 9 pm on the last two Fridays (17th and 24th) and the fourth Saturday (18th) in October. Special request strolls for groups of ten or more may be arranged by calling The Male Academy at 770-251-0207. The Stroll takes a little over an hour, so participants are advised to wear comfortable shoes. Guests for Dinner With th Dead, venue to be announced, will be greeted and entertained by a cadre of characters from the Civil War era. Gathered together for your amusement and edification will be the following: Nurse Fanny Beers, one of many women with nursing and midwife experience who volunteered their services to caring for the wounded (Elizabeth Beers); two members of the Nancy Harts, the only fully commissioned female unit in the war, who saved the town of La Grange (Trish Thompson and Lynn Matthews); and Fighting General Joe Wheeler, only 28 years old, who defeated a force twice the size of his due to cunning tactics (Michael Boulas). And last but certainly not least, the winsome couple pictured here. Carol Healy dons a dazzling vintage gown from her collection to portray a southern belle, escorted by a gallant Pvt. William Thomas Oversby. As local history buffs may recall, Oversby was hanged as a spy for Col. Mosby's Rangers in Virginia, and was the only recipient of the Medal of Honor from the state of Georgia. The Dinner With the Dead will be catered by Ten East Washington and will feature Chef George's famous penne pasta with chicken in vodka sauce as well as freshly baked rolls, veggies, desert, and a selection of wines (including the ever popular Vampire Red). Tickets for the Spirit Strolls are $15.00. Tickets for Dinner With the Dead, to be held on Saturday, October 25th only, at 8 pm, are $40. Linda Jennings Co-Hosts TV Show: New Times Announced
Linda Jennings of Newnan was in the news recently in connection with the book she published last year, Life Within The Veil -- she will be signing copies of it at the Coweta Authors Book Signing Extravaganza on September 27 & 28 in Grantville as part of Grantville Day. Well, she is back in the news again -- this time as a television show hostess. For the past four years she has co-hosted a show called Tea With Maggie and Linda. The program is broadcast at various times both from Atlanta and from Newnan. The Atlanta stations are Channels 19 and 24 on Charter Cable, and the Newnan station is Channel 95 on NU Link (NU stands for Newnan Utilities). They invite guests onto the show which they believe will have something to say which will help Christians become more mature in the their walk with God.

Jennings recently announced that the times the show is broadcast have been changed. The new times are shown below.

Coweta Author Mike Ottensmeyer Speaking at PTC LitFest Jilly Prouty, Administrator of the Peachtree City Library, has announced the activities for this year's Annual Literary Festival, LitFest, sponsored by the Library. One of the speakers at LitFest is Coweta County author Mike Ottensmeyer, who writes using the pen name "Michael George". Ottensmeyer is a member of the Coweta Writers Group. The PTC LitFest is the latest example of recognition being given to Coweta's authors of recently published books. Lit Fest will be held this coming weekend, September 19 thru 21. Ottensmeyer will be one of the speakers on Saturday's activities, which will be held at City Hall. Here is Prouty's announcement concerning Ottensmeyer's (pen name Michael George) contribution: Author Michael George of Newnan will discuss his book The Melon Boys at 3 p.m. A coming of age story, The Melon Boys was largely influenced by George's own experience working alongside black sharecroppers and migrant workers in the watermelon fields of southern Alabama and South Carolina in 1968." Schultz 770-583-3258 September 8, 2008 At The Wadsworth on Satuday: VOICES Concert Receives Standing Ovation Post-Concert "Meet and Greet" Also a Hit By now everyone who is au courant with the Southside arts scene has heard about the greatness of VOICES and the launching of its 2008-2009 season with a Fall Benefit Concert at The Wadsworth in Newnan on Saturday. Those who attended this important musical event expressed their appreciation by giving VOICES a well-deserved standing ovation at the conclusion of the Concert. The program consisted of a medley of various kinds of song, all of which were performed to perfection. The most moving was Zaphyra's singing of various pieces from The Phantom of the Opera, which evoked the poignancy of that tragic tale. The most striking was The Southern Nights Chorale's unusual rendition of Georgia On My Mind. The post-concert "Meet and Greet" event in The Wadsworth lobby was skillfully catered by its sponsor, the Ten East Washington restaurant in downtown Newnan. The aesthetics of the cranberry punch fountain and drinking cups and the hors d'oeuvres serving trays was impressive and quite apropos for the conclusion of an important arts event and for providing a great atmosphere in which to meet the performers. The Concert program booklet was also noteworthy for its beautiful design, another appropriate feature for a great performing arts event. And the wardrobes of the performers were very impressive. Cowetans are grateful to VOICES for this Concert and to its Artistic Director, Maria Pia Ugarte, for honoring Coweta County by selecting a Coweta venue to launch this season. Cowetans can heartily recommend to others in the Southside that they attend the VOICES concerts which will be held in their counties! Three Southern Country Gospel Music Groups Performing at Grantville Day The Christianairs, One Accord, and The Toomey Family on Sun. Sept. 28
For some time now the fourth weekend of each month in Grantville has usually featured concerts by Southern Country Gospel Music Groups in the renovated Railroad Freight Depot arranged by Roy Smith. Well, this year during the fourth weekend in September the annual Grantville Day community festival is being held, which this year is being called the Grantville Days Crosstie Festival. The Grantville Day planning committee has decided to devote Sunday afternoon, September 28 to Southern Country Gospel Music. As previously announced, the concert will begin at 1:00 PM with Jerry Yates. Now the rest of the afternoon's performers have been determined, and the Grantville Day committee is thanking Roy Smith for his help in arranging for them to be there. There will be three Southern Country Gospel groups, which will begin their music at 2:00 PM. These groups are The Christianairs from LaGrange, GA; One Accord from Columbus, GA; and The Toomey Family from Buena Vista, GA.
These same three groups along with Danny Geter, Danny Spencer, Masters Touch, and D.W Penn, will also in concert in Coweta the following week in the Town of Moreland at Emmanuel Baptist Church on October 4 beginning at 11:00 AM
