NCTC Presents Its First One-Man Show

Most one-man shows are monologues espousing the author's core beliefs.  However, this is not what Newnan Community Theatre Company's first one man show is.  What it is is a hilarious comedy written by Becky Mode.  On May 15 and 16, Trey Stephens will star in "Fully Committed."

In its simplicity, "Fully Committed" is a side-splitting satire about people who are desperate to book a table at New York City 's hottest French restaurant, and the employee who has to deal with them all.

Actor Stephens stated the play selection was pretty easy.  Although he liked the idea of being on stage on a rant, he wanted to appeal to a wider audience.  "Fully Committed" is not a difficult play to understand or follow.  The show follows a young, naïve, unemployed actor in New York City .  He works for a restaurant reservations desk where the requests are non-stop.  Sam, the main character, is taken advantage of by all the people who desire to get their own way.  Throughout the course of the play Sam must try to cope with fulfilling everyone's needs.  This is an impossible task as the needs of others are in direct competition with one another.  Sam eventually decides to take control.  By the end of the show, Sam goes from being a boy with a dream to a man with a plan.

Stephens chose to do a one-man show because he wanted to expand what he is capable of accomplishing.  He also stated he "wanted to set a good example for the artists of Newnan to try and push the envelope a little more.  Do something uncomfortable and scary, because that is when the true magic happens."

"Fully Committed" is comprised of 36 different characters (37 if you count a pre-recorded voice-over), all portrayed by Stephens.  He states "Sometimes I disagree with myself, other times I am trying to make sure that I don't feel too bad about something that I did to myself.  I obviously get to talk in silly voices, and playing 10 different women is not easy!"

Trey has been volunteering at NCTC for the past three years.  He directed "Noises Off!," and "Daddy's Dyin'," and appeared in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "The Odd Couple." Stephens is a regular participant in the NITWITS, NCTC's improvisational comedy troupe.  He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in Drama and is proud to currently teach Mathematics at Mt. Zion High School in Carroll County .

Playwright Becky Mode developed "Fully Committed" with Mark Setlock.  It premiered in New York in 1999 and was an immediate success.  Mode is a former actress, waitress, and coat check girl.  She was a staff writer on "The Cosby Show."

"Fully Committed" will be performed in NCTC's black box theatre, May 15 and 16, at 8 pm.  Seating is limited.  The cost is $10 per person.  Tickets may be purchased from the theatre's website, newnantheatre.com.  You can make a reservation by emailing NCTC at nctc@numail.org or calling the theatre at 770-683-6282.  Newnan Community Theatre Company is located in downtown Newnan at 24 1st Avenue .  The non-profit organization is completely volunteer-run.

Second Coming and New Horizons In Concert in Grantville Depot on May 23

The monthly Southern Country Gospel Music Concerts in Grantville's renovated Railroad Freight Depot are regarded by the musicians not only as performing arts, but also as ministries.  In fact one of them last year even added the word "ministries" to its official name so that it is now known as Second Coming Ministries, which is clearly indicated on the official photograph of the group, which is shown below because they are one of the groups which will be in concert at the Depot this month.  They are based in Griffin, GA; and the other group which will be performing and ministering will be the New Horizons

from Thomaston, GA.

The concert will begin at 7 PM on Saturday May 23.  As always, admission is free, refreshments will be served, the atmosphere will be friendly and picnic-like, and there will be an opportunity to meet the musicians. Seating is provided inside the Depot but one is free to listen from outside the building in adjacent Colley Park if one wishes to do so.  The Park & Depot in the heart of a small rural Southern town provide an ideal ambience for the Southern Country Gospel Music Genre.

Grantville is located at the south end of Coweta County at Exit 35 on Interstate 85.

Information on the Gospel Depot Concerts is available from Roy Smith at 770-251-5621 or at depotsinging@yahoo.com.

William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", will come to life this July at Newnan Community Theatre Company.  However, the auditions must come first.  They are to be May 11th and 12th at the theatre.

Shakespeare is considered to be the world's best playwright and Midsummer is one of his most popular plays.  The play portrays the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors.  The lovers and actors interact with the Duke and Duchess of Athens and with fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest.

If you are aged 8 to 16, you can try out for the role of a fairy.  Some of the fairy roles are speaking, some are non-speaking, and both males and females are needed.  Fairies will audition on May 11 and May 12 at 6:00 pm.  Actors can attend either evening.  Prepare a short poem or Shakespearian monologue.

There are 17 roles for ages 16 through adult.  Auditions for these roles are May 11 and May 12 at 7:00 pm (attend either evening).  Prepare a short comedic Shakespearean monologue (a minute or less).

Newnan High School Students Win Two Prizes in Cong. Dist. Art Contest

Jasmine Thrasher Wins First Place; Madison Welch Wins Second Place

The Coweta arts community and Third District U. S. Congressman Lynn Westmoreland are very excited about the latest Coweta triumph in the arts:  two Newnan High School students have won the two top prizes in this year's Third Congressional District High School Art Contest.  This is the second year in a row this has happened at Newnan High, and both years the winners have been students of NHS art teacher Jodi Hobbs, who encourages her students to enter.  And prior to that, when NHS was in Phil Gingrey's district, Hobbs' student Shanna Walston won the top prize in 2003.  (Walston has since become a school teacher and has married artist Scott Palmer from Grantville.)

Here is the press release issued by Brian Robinson, Westmoreland's Deputy Chief of Staff:

Newnan students take top art prizes

U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland congratulates Newnan High School senior Jasmine Thrasher on winning the 2009 3rd Congressional District art competition with her painting "Study of Light." Another Newnan senior, Madison Welch, finished second with her artwork titled "Frosted Berries."

"This is a repeat performance for Newnan High School and art teacher Jodi Hobbs," Westmoreland said. "Our winner this year, Jasmine, finished second last year behind Ms. Hobbs' daughter Anna. There's obviously an excellent program at Newnan, with exemplary teaching and talented, hard-working students.

"Every year, I'm amazed at the depth of artistic talent that we have in the 3rd District," Westmoreland continued. "We're lucky to have a distinguished panel of judges and I don't envy their task of choosing between so many great works – we had 68 entries overall. But at the end of the day, we could only have one winner and I'm proud of Jasmine for making yet another strong showing and coming away with the blue ribbon."

Westmoreland gave special thanks to the judges: Bette Hickman of Newnan (executive director of Global Achievers), Vicki Turner of Fayetteville (director of advertising/marketing for AIS Computers), Mark Lucas of Columbus (Lucas Studios of Art) and Tim Williams of Greystone Power in Douglasville.

Jasmine's "Study of Light" will hang in the U.S. Capitol for year, joining a gallery of winners from each congressional district. This summer, Jasmine will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington for the unveiling ceremony courtesy of a generous gift from Georgia EMC. The top three finishers will also receive scholarship offers from the Savannah School of Art and Design and the Atlanta Art Institute. Third place went to Fayette County High School freshman Caleb Brown, for his pencil sketch of football players battling it out on the gridiron.

Next NITWITS Shows at Newnan Theatre On May 8, 9

In addition to its regular performances of plays, the Newnan Theatre last year began presenting performances by its newly formed improvisation troupe, the NITWITS.  In the improvisation performances the actors do NOT know ahead of time what they will be doing.  Several of them are summoned onto a bare stage with no costumes, (usually) no props, no scripts, etc. and then are told what they must do.  For instance, in a performance I saw there several months ago, one of the times they were called on stage and told, "You are a bomb squad disassembling a bomb which has ___ minutes left til it explodes.  GO!"  To really appreciate it, though, you have to see it, which I encourage you to do.  The NITWITS are very good and very funny.

Here is what the Newnan Theatre Publicity Director Dianne Olsen says about their next performances:

                                        NITWITS ADDS FRIDAY SHOW

Due to popularity, Newnan Community Theatre Company's improvisational troupe, the NITWITS, have added a Friday evening performance along with their usual Saturday show.

At the performance, the troupe performs a variety of comedy sketches and games.  Some skits involve audience participation, with all skits you don't know what will happen next.  Their next shows will be May 8 and 9.  The show begins at 8 pm and admission is $5 at the door.  It's open seating, so arriving around 7:30 is recommended.  The hosts for the evening are Jeff Allen and Heather Hyde.

NCTC is located at 24 First Avenue in downtown Newnan.  For more information on the NITWITS and other events, visit their website at newnantheatre.com or call the theatre at (770) 683-6282.

Artist Janet McGregor Dunn Participating in Senoia's Art Of Green On April 25

Will Be Interviewed on 92.5 FM (The Bear) Radio on April 23

Carla Cook Smith has just released today (April 21) the info that another prominent Fayette County artist will be participating in Senoia's Art Of Green, namely Janet McGregor Dunn..  Two days before the art festival she will be interviewed on Senoia's radio station 92.5 FM The Bear.  Here is the news release:

"Senoia's "Art of Green" Art Show brings recycled art to Georgia's Earth Day celebration. The event, which will take place Saturday, April 25th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in historic downtown Senoia is sponsored by the Cultural Arts Committee of the Senoia Downtown Development Authority  and presented by " Arts and Expressions "  magazine.   The most recent artist to participate in the show is Potter Janet McGregor Dunn .  Janet recycles nature into some of her  pottery, adding straw, rocks and leaves or other found items from the woods surrounding her home.  Mrs. Dunn's enthusiasm for creating interesting and eclectic pottery is obvious. Dunn discovered her love for working with clay approximately 15 years ago after a lifetime of drawing, painting with oils and acrylics, and multi-media crafting.   Janet notes:  "Clay allows me to incorporate all of the various mediums I enjoy.    I knew when I put my fingers in that first block of clay and began forming it that I had found 'my' perfect media."

The Fayette County potter's work is earthy, bluesy, and each piece seems to be unlike any other she has made.   The hues and colors of nature from the blues of water and sky to the browns and greens of leaves, grass and trees can be seen in a large portion of her completed pottery. All of her work incorporates a variety of textures.  Janet says she is constantly  " on the prowl "  for new textures to incorporate into  her  pieces.

In addition to exhibiting at "The Art of Green Show," some of  Janet's work is currently on display at the Dogwood Gallery  in Tyrone.   Her work can be viewed online at www.Hummingbird-Hollow.com  or by appointment  ( 404-290-3638 ).

Listen for Janet along with Ann Busey, Chairman of the DDA's Cultural Arts Committe as well as other artists, Thursday evening, April 23rd at 9:15 p.m. on 92.5 The Bear."

Coweta Photographer Daniel Piar Show at Arts Clayton Gallery In May

Last year Photographic Artist Daniel Piar of Sharpsburg accomplished a great feat by winning the statewide Juried Photography Show of Arts Clayton.  He is now back in the news again, this time for his upcoming show at the Arts Clayton Gallery in May.  The following information about this show was released today (April 20) by Arts Clayton:

Coming in May- Structure & Space, Daniel Piar

Join us in May as we celebrate the fine photography of 2008 Juried Photography Show winner, Daniel Piar.

There is structure in a building, but there is also structure in the line of a horizon, the shape of a tree, or the angle of a hummingbird's wings.  These structures define the spaces in which we live, and into which we look.  When we fully see these structures and the spaces they create, then the ordinary becomes extraordinary.  Large things become intimate, and small things become infinite.  When we are seeing well, we can see beyond surfaces, and our seeing transforms the world. – Daniel Piar

Daniel F. Piar has been photographing in a variety of formats, both film and digital, for over a decade.  His work emphasizes the built environment, the natural environment, and the interaction of humans with the landscape.  His photographs are held in private collections and in the permanent collection of the Arts Clayton Gallery.  His work has also appeared in numerous juried shows, including Slow Exposures, the annual Newnan-Coweta Arts Association exhibit, and the inaugural Nature, Undisturbed show sponsored by the Southern Conservation Trust.  In addition to photographing, he does all of his own editing, printing and framing to maintain complete control over the creative process..  Daniel holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard and a law degree from Yale; he lives in Sharpsburg, GA with his wife and daughter.  For more information, please visit his website at www.piarphotography.com.

Show runs 5.5.2009 - 5.29.2009
Opening reception is May 7 from 5:30-7:30pm.

Newnan-based Etreasures Publishes Its 50th Book

Vickie Kennedy of Newnan today is celebrating the publication of the 50th book by her etreasures Publishing Company.  Etreasures is important for the Coweta scene not only as a publisher based in Coweta but also for the books by Cowetans it has published.  Kennedy herself has had four of her books published by etreasures.  Her fellow Newnanite Christina Barber had her award winning Greystone published there, and Ann Westmoreland had three children's books published by etreasures while she was living in Newnan.  Tony Boyd Priest from Sharpsburg had his Call Sign:  Iceman published there.  At first Kennedy only published books by Georgia authors, but soon began doing so for authors all over the country, and even in a few foreign countries..  Info is available on its website www.etreasurespublishing.com.

Here are Kennedy's own words about what this means to her:

eTreasures publishes it's 50th book!

Here at eTreasures, we take pride in the quality of books we accept.  Out of the hundreds we've received since we started in September, 2006, we selected only the best stories for our line of books.  Books take time to publish.  There are many steps each book has to go through.  First, it goes to Acquisitions.  They determine if the book meets our minimal standards.  If it's accepted, it goes to an editor who reads the story and checks for typing errors,  Then, if no re-writes are needed, it goes to another editor for grammar and punctuation, and lastly, to a copyeditor for word by word structure and clarification.  While these steps are going on, we create the cover art and send to the author for approval.  Once the book is edited, it's then formatted for publishing, the cover is added, and then it's converted to e-book.  It's then sent to the author for approval.  The author gets a chance to read over it, make any changes, and once those final changes are made,  it's released to the public through our site, and over 50 e-book re-sellers worldwide.  After the e-book is released, the book requested for print is then created.  Again, going through the many steps needed, with different specifications, and a long list of re-sellers of print books.  By then, we've polished and fine tuned the book to be as professional and perfect as it can get.

Today, April 17, 2009 we have published our 50th e-book!  We still have more lined up for the year, but 50 books in two and a half years is remarkable.

Kimberly "Kimbo" Daniel Participating in Senoia's "Art of Green"

Fayette County Artist The Creator of The Poem and Sculpture Merl

Carla Cook Smith has announced that the famous Fayette artist, poet, and acress Kimberly "Kimbo" Daniel will be a participant in Senoia's "Art of Green" exhibition held on April 25. Daniel is already known to Coweta artists by her membership in the Newnan-Coweta Art Association. (NCAA).  Smith has provided us with the following information on Daniel, including her famous poem Merl and her famous sculpture Merl (based on the poem) shown below.

Fayette County Artist Participates in Earth Day Art Show in Senoia
"The Art of Green" sidewalk art show will feature the work of Kimberly "Kimbo" Daniel among other artists Saturday, April 25th in historic downtown Senoia. "Kimbo" to everyone excepting her son Daniel, who knows her as "Mombo," says she has been an artist as long as she can remember. At the age of seven, she was pulled out of class so that college students could study her work and observe her creative expression. Following that experience, her family encouraged Kimbo through classes and art supplies. After graduation, Kimbo attended the Art Institute in Atlanta and later certified through the University of Georgia in graphic design.
Today, Kimbo paints, sculpts, sings, writes poetry as well as music, and goes to casting calls for acting parts. Kimbo has been producing recycled sculptures for over 14 years. The artist refers to the sculptures as her "people," which are innovative, fun, and sometimes profound. Kimbo's sculptures each include a message through a song or poem.
"Merl" is a doll with a tree growing out of her head. Her poem relates the fable, "Merl."  ©  Kimberly "Kimbo" Daniel
There once was a poor, jealous girl named Merl.
She'd sit in a tree and acorns she'd hurl.
As the socialites would walk by
She'd be up very high
looking at their fancy clothing and jewels.

She'd get a gleam in her eye
(And I still don't know why)
But she'd aim for the backs of their heads.
(Here comes the part that I dread)…

….The acorns kept dropping.
There was just no stopping!
It hurt, and the people would cry.
She'd laugh as they ran quickly by.

One night, after playing, Merl was heard saying,
"I wish I had gold, jewels and pearls."
The next morning when she woke
(this is no joke) the little girl's wish had come true!

Out of her head a branch had sprung
(to remind her of the things she'd done).
It was made of pure gold,
(at least that's what I'm told) and the acorns were
all pearly white.

You may find this amusing
But the path that you're choosing
may not be the right way to go.

Don't despair. Life can be fair.
Look at Merl.
She got what she wanted,
And what she deserved!!
